  1. The run up to Velstadt has to be the most annoying in the game. They deliberately made the AI aggro in groups and the last two guys impossible to pull. I don't like that kind of designer intent in these games, make it hard if you want but let the AI be the AI, don't leash a guy to a door just so I can't run past. I'm generally in favour of having a bit of space between the bonfire and the boss, but that whole section feels like the game is wasting my time. You can buy infinite Alluring Skulls from Shalquoir after you open SoW. Try them! Apparently they also work in the Freja fight. Yeah that's a trap you can fall into. I usually whack the first two, hide and let them be revived, then whack them again. That gives enough room to take out the necro. Everyone has their personal devil bosses I spent two hours fighting Mytha, without the poison. I think Demon of Song is one of the cooler bosses in the game though, hard or not.
  2. I did it shieldless on the SL1 playthrough I'm doing. It's not about skill really, it's just figuring out how to manipulate the skeletons. Once you get the right path down you can do it consistently. You can of course block with your weapon in emergencies. I also did that fight a second time (with ascetic) to get the Cloranthy Ring +2, that was a very different story. After two hours of not getting to the second Necromancer once I caved in and used the secret strategy for that fight: Alluring Skulls. Skellies love chasing those things, just toss one and let the chariot run them over then repeat. The horse is the tricky part at that point. Demon of Song? Huh. I think that's one of the easiest bosses (honestly)! The arena is so large, you can just bait an attack and run backwards, then run in and hit him during the recovery. Just fought him again an hour ago. As for parries, I believe it's the 2HR1. I heard about it in .

    It noticeably increases weapon accuracy, decreases enemy aggro range, decreases sound propagation range, automatically applies bandages for you at low health, adds NV that lets you see almost perfectly, increases carry load, adds fast travel, I think it decreases enemy damage etc. Those are things that a lot of people will appreciate, because S.T.A.L.K.E.R. does have notoriously punishing combat, but it presents itself as mostly a graphics / bugfix mod, which I think is disingenuous. If you're going to install it for your first playthrough you should at least know what it does.
  4. Finished off Halberds have some unparriable attacks. Well, I know at least one of them does, but I think it applies to the whole weapon class. He should probably have more HP, but I kinda like that fight. Sometimes it's fun to dodge stuff without too much trouble.

    Sanctus shield gives HP regen, but it's quite slow (2 HP / s). He could've used a miracle too.

  8. Probably to stress you out. Personally I don't like that choice either. The enemies in there drop ascetics though, and for every ascetic you can get 5x effigies and the dude also sells 10 of them. If you're worried about running out I say back up your save.

    He can't hit you with his spear if you stay right in front of him, you just have to keep dodging towards him when he hops back and watch out for the buttslam.

  14. You have almost no points in Vigor, which gives you health. I'd focus on that. Having some Adaptability is nice too, even if you aren't rolling much. It lets you use items quicker (Estus, lifegems etc.) which is very helpful, particularly in bossfights. You should note that there are some soft caps for stats, Endurance starts giving diminishing returns after 20 (as does Vigor). It can still be worth putting in more points than that, but it's usually a good place to leave them until your other stats catch up.

  17. Those whips seem quite neat, be sure to infuse them with poison. You can use the rat covenant ring too, it has a hidden poison bonus.

    I would recommend just playing the vanilla version of the game. Complete isn't just a set of bugfixes, there are some major mechanical changes that (I think) take away from the oppressive feel of the game.

  20. But on the bracing knuckle ring and use the R2 to poison people. Each hit counts towards the poison buildup.
  21. I used the OKS the entire game, but it seems like 95% of people use the Drangleic one. They're both a bit too good for their weight I think.
  22. Joined the bellbros on my SL1, it's a lot of fun! Farmed over 40 chunks, I hope that will last the entire playthrough haha. Ended the night with a 1k damage drop attack! Only ran into one cheater too, not bad.
  23. I might join the bellbros to farm some chunks. I don't think ADP is the biggest problem though, it's some of the other stats. In Dark Souls you can use the Balder Shield, which is one of the better medium shields in the game. In DkS2 however there's only one 100% physical block shield you can use, but you need to 2-hand it to meet the strength requirement and it only comes after the dull ember. You have to 2-hand the Mace or Broadsword anyway so I guess it doesn't matter that much. Beat the first four bosses last night, as well as Skeleton Lords. Since that fight took a bit longer I must admit I did notice the music this time . I thought it was pretty good. The fight is still the Pinwheel of this game though, easier than even Last Giant except for those damn bonewheels! They are the most bastardly enemy ever designed. The last two would always tag me, I finally beat it by killing them as they were spawning and screwing their heads on (literally). Also managed to parry Pursuer in front of the ballista and kill him that way, very satisfying!
  24. I haven't played Demon Souls either! I'm eager to try it and perhaps I'll be wrong about that Miyazaki touch. A comparison that keeps popping up in my head though is Royal Rat Authority vs Sif. There's a sad story behind the latter (especially if you do the DLC first), and the tragedy of the whole thing comes through in every part of the presentation, the animation, the music and the arena itself. Obviously I wasn't in their design meetings, but it feels like their goal with that fight was more about the tone of it than anything else. Maybe there's a backstory to RRA that I don't know about, but it doesn't come across in the fight itself and it seems like it's main purpose is to be a callback to Sif. I was glad when it limped because I knew the fight was over. It's not entirely fair to compare one of the more memorable fights in the first game to a crap optional one in the second, because they both have crap ones, but still. Going to start an SL1 CoC run now. Wish me luck :U
  25. Finally finished it, took me 58 hours but I tried to be as thorough as I could. I ended up with 553 deaths which is more than my all bosses SL1 run for the first game! Kinda crazy. Unlike that run though I would say the majority of deaths weren't to bosses. Had to hope out of the Company of Champions for one boss but otherwise I stuck with it.
