Idle Thumbs Asks: What Is the Best Video Game of All Time?
eot replied to posh_somme's topic in Video Gaming
They answer that in the podcast. I liked Chris using Jake's definition to conclude that it was the right definition, clever! Using Chris' definition though I'd pick Dark Souls. For me it is the best at the things which only video games do. It uses space astonishingly well, and makes you build a mental map of the world that leads to nonverbal moments of relevation. It also has mechanics that fully resonate with the themes it's trying to present. Finally, it's written in a way that takes advantage of the fact that you're playing the game, not passively observing it. I think it's amazing in so many ways and all of them are unique to the form. Moments of discovery, tension, uncertainty, relief, victory and melancholy all just through interactive systems. That's games at their best. I also think Dwarf Fortress deserves a mention in any discussion like this. -
Even though they've made it a lot easier to get onto Steam, Valve still doesn't let every game on there. If they did they wouldn't need Greenlight. The arbitrary nature of their curation might be a bit of a problem (less than it used to be though), but if that's what you want to fight against then why pick this game to make a big fuss about? I didn't see the outrage three years ago when indie games getting onto Steam was reserved for ones the press gushed about or for people who met some Valve employee at a convention. To me this just looks like people playing devil's advocate. They can quote Voltaire until their keyboards break, but if you only stand up for vile crap like this then I can't take the argument seriously.
-
I do :[ It'll probably break again, but I haven't tested it since I can't connect to GFWL.

Everything I've heard about this game makes it sound like something I'd like (except that the environments look like they were lifted out of Serious Sam), but I can rarely justify spending that "much" on a game (I'm a poor student) so I'll wait a bit.

I'm so bad. I've been meaning to buy a 2nd copy of Portal two so my sis could play it co-op with a friend when she comes to visit, but I keep forgetting to do it when it's on sale. So she comes to visit, I buy it not on sale (with GMG coupon though), add it to a useless Steam account (my dad's) and then her friend already had a copy of Portal 2. Maximum waste.

I'm quite sure I broke a bunch of ribs and some bones in my shoulder a few years back. I, stupidly, never went to see anyone about it though and I still get what I think is phantom pain every now and then. It used to be pretty bad but it's lessened with time. The whole thing was a bit unsettling though, because for a few weeks my spine would crack like crazy if I tried to curve my back (when getting out of bed etc.), and anything to do with your spine is scary.

Various Idle Thumbs Star in Latest FemFrequency Video (spoiler: it's great).

Without the beard Chris looks a bit like an italian mobster out of a movie . He just needs a tommygun and a coat. -
If you press the filtering option (next to 'search') the drop down lists the number of games in each category, including your total number of games. So you can just check if your own master list matches the total number of games you have.
-
I basically don't. If there's something I'm playing I add it to favourites while I'm playing it, then remove it and I only show favourites. However, I recently started making a category for finished games just to get an idea of what proportion of games I've yet to go through. If you could drag and drop into categories I might use it more, but the RMB->set category is too clunky.

I thought about it for a while, and I'm pretty sure it's not a split-S. It's just an inverted dive that's recovered halfway through. In a split-S you only roll inverted at the start, the Falcon rolls un-inverted again while in the dive. It wouldn't look like that though. Maybe having played too many flight sims is what's making me feel that it looks wrong, but keeping your nose on the target in a turn like that is the biggest rookie mistake. The angle off tail gets out of control and you overshoot. The camera is not moving at all like a plane would in that circumstance. The distance between the camera and the Falcon increases and decreases at the complete opposite times it "actually" would. (I'm not saying the movie will be bad because the camera doesn't move like a fighter jet, I'm just geeking out a little).
-
That is ten times better.
-
Yes, to me the camera movement feels like it lacks the proper inertia, which then makes the movement of the Falcon feel weird as well. I don't think the shaking helps.
-
I know I'm in the minority but I want less "cool shit" too. I don't want an over the top action movie because I can't think of the last one of those that I liked. I want an adventure movie that's about the characters. The thing I want least of all are masturbatory light sabre duels. Sorry for being such a downer.

I started taking them this year and I like it, makes me feel refreshed whereas hot showers make me feel drowsy. The water finally got cold again this month too.

Dark Souls 2 (Dark Souls successor (Demon's Souls successor))
eot replied to melmer's topic in Video Gaming
If this is cheaper for people who already own DkS2 then I might consider it, but I think I'll just wait for the DLC to get discounted. Now if they did this for Dark Souls instead, then we'd be talking!- 1284 replies

Japanese also uses 10,000 as a base for large numbers, but they got that from the Chinese so I guess it doesn't count (haha).

I've never understood the 360 noscope thing. It seems like a stand in for thing that are actually impressive.

Oh yeah, the audio is real. Some of it's from here for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUZYwCK7PxQ Also, if you have an hour to waste:

CCP put together a trailer that uses player voice coms and it turned out well I think

I was playing some D2, clearing out the Den of Evil and I had my quest log open. At the end it tells you how many monsters are left, and for a second it flashed to 666. Can't be a coincidence!

Maybe not what you're getting at, but Deus Ex has two quite significant narrative choices that are never explicitly presented to you.
-
That's what I did too. On easy you won't get hung up on the combat, but instead it's a huge part of the game you don't particularly enjoy. I think if I replay it I'll try to bump up the difficulty and try to actually get into the mechanics.

The only weird sleep related experience I think I've had was having a dream, while being aware that I was having a dream while simultaneously being aware of the real world. I know that sounds nonsensical but it's the best way I can describe it. It's happened a few times. I guess the another thing was final year in high school we had to do a graduation project thing, and I put it off for a long while. Ended up having to stay up writing for two whole days straight. When I showed up at school to hand it in I was seeing pages of text whenever I looked at a flat surface. Probably had more to do with staring at a screen for that long than sleep deprivation. Also used to do a lot of all nighters at internet cafes back when CS had just come out. It was a thing for a while. My tennis coach got annoyed with us though because we always had practice the next day at 10am and I don't think we performed that well. I think I slept 30+ hours after one of those.

I'll have to try making my own tempura mix, didn't know it was that simple.

I also played it recently. There were a few jokes that got me pretty good, like the flying toasters that go by for two seconds (a reference to a great old mac screensaver). I thought the resort area wasn't as imaginative as the rest of the game though.
