  1. Yeah it's awful in that fight, mostly because of the arena.
  2. Is that a chalice dungeon boss? I didn't do a single one of those.

I ended up turning down a job offer that was great in every way except that I wasn't excited at all about it. Next week I have an interview for a different project that I'm much more keen on. I'm quite hopeful, but even if I don't get it I think I made the right choice. Time will tell I suppose.
  4. Has anyone had a chance to give the expansion a whirl? I missed this, gonna give it a listen.
  5. Life

Hah, I'm sorry but that's kinda funny. It's what you'd expect one of the kids to do.
  6. Sometimes when forums get a complete makeover it does feel like getting used to a new one. There are some places I no longer frequent because of that hehe.
  7. I'm sometimes surprised there isn't a thread for game X or Y but I sure as hell ain't going to make it

I know this is pathetic to complain about but I got offered a job that I was hoping I wouldn't be because I'm not sure I want it or not, and now I only have three days to decide if I want to move half way across the country.
  9. The fourth episode of Quake is by far the worst, and you're right that those slimes are a pain in the neck. I actually recommend skipping it entirely. Also, if you want to play it I can hook you up with a copy of Shogo because I like it so much D: (it's a '98 game)

I had an 'interview' the other day where I bascially wasn't asked anything, I thought that was pretty strange. I did give a presentation and was asked some questions regarding that, but there wasn't even a "tell us about yourself".

That sounds super stressful SAM. If things turn out poorly that's a management failure, not your failure. I was going to reach out to them, but I just got a notification that someone else got the job. Right before that though I got called to an interview for a different PhD position, so I guess that evens it out.
  12. I've been working my way through the old games (currently most of the way through the fourth one) and I still find them very enjoyable despite not having played them in 15 years. The control scheme is strange compared to modern games, but it's actually very precise. I don't fault you for not coming to grips with them, once you do however the response time of the character is a non-issue, because the game isn't played like that. This video explains it well: Controls aside, I think the basic framework of those old games is great. It's just you, alone in a large environment without a bunch of distractions to ruin the atmosphere, with a focus on moderately challenging platforming and exploration. Nobody makes games even resembling that anymore. The original games all have their problems, the first one has a moveset that's too limited and the tech wasn't quit there yet, the second one has way too much combat and began the trend of bad vehicle sections, the third one is probably the best overall but still has large chunks that don't feel like they belong (London) and the fourth one goes too far into adventure game territory with annoying puzzles. I would love for someone to make a modern game in this mold. Anniversary got quite close, but the new ones are just action games with some very light platforming and puzzle solving. I want a game that's 99% exploration / platforming and 1% combat if it has any at all. I'm not sure how you'd do something quite like TR now though, just with regards to the platforming. The thing is that the blocky geometry of the old games actually worked really well in terms of gameplay. A piece of geometry with a certain shape always behaves the same way, and that's what brings the puzzle element to the platforming. When you increase the level of graphical fidelity it becomes much harder to communicate what parts of the environment you can perform certain actions on, and it seems like most games resort to labelling them almost explicitly. It becomes much less interesting to play in and explore those environments.
  13. The old ones, the slightly newer ones, or the new ones?

I had an interview about a month and a half ago, they said they'd be in touch within a few weeks. I'm 99% sure they haven't hired anyone, but I'm wondering if I should contact them. Not sure if it's pushy to do so, or if it seems like I'm disinterested if I don't etc.
  15. Fallout 4 — Boston Makes Me Feel Good

Elements of surprise can be crucial to any scene regardless of its place in the story, see: Mass Effect 2.
  16. Fallout 4 — Boston Makes Me Feel Good

That reminds me of the BioWare RPG template that was going around around a while ago.
  17. Fallout 4 — Boston Makes Me Feel Good

I don't think that was a particularly great trailer on any level, the delivery of the lines, the actual lines themselves, the music, the pacing. Maybe it's a hard game to make a trailer for. However, if I knew nothing about Fallout 4 that trailer wouldn't sell me on it.
  18. Other podcasts

I realise this is a month late, but for me it was cathartic to hear him say those things because I fully agree with him on every point. If I were to make a list of things I don't understand why people love, Zelda would be at the top of it. Mostly because of how intensely people care about it (Twilight Princess reveal and all that). Good for them though, I just don't get it.
  19. Idle Workouts

Hah, I haven't had that problem. What are you eating? Just beans?
  20. Idle Workouts

Well, my BMI is in the 16's so the difference isn't that big
  21. Idle Workouts

I started working out this week (something I've been meaning to do for ages, so yay!) and in the past the thing that stopped me from making much progress was not eating enough. So I decided to keep track of that with myfittnesspal which people seem to recommend all the time. It makes up some goal numbers for you, like approximately 2 grams of protein per kg bodyweight. Seems fine. Except I'm stuffing my face to the best of my ability and I haven't hit those numbers a single day. I'm literally eating three times as much in a single meal and it's not enough lol. Maybe being vegetarian doesn't help, I can't just eat eggs and milk, and cheese and nuts are both quite expensive. I figure though, since I am eating way more maybe that's enough even though it's less than what some website tells me? I guess I'll find out.
  22. I Had A Random Thought...

There's a county called Yolo? Haha
  23. Life

If I ever get married, which I strongly doubt, that's probably how I'd do it. If you don't enjoy large parties, being the center of attention etc. then you shouldn't feel pressured into doing it just because it's the norm. Not to mention the cost. I like celebrating other people, but I hate celebrating myself (birthdays, graduation etc.).

The worst ads were the ones on CO-OP, the follow up to the 1UP show. They desperately needed a professional narrator for those. and maybe even a real actor.
