My grievance with Spacebase was that the asking price seemed very high for what they were offering, and that made ending development (what I consider) prematurely sting a bit.

Seems like a success to me. When I tried that my cat ran out the door and didn't come back for three days.

Official Giant Bomb Thread Mostly for Complaining About Dan

Not sure if this should go here or in the Dark Souls thread but Dan's playthrough of the game has been quite entertaining so far.- 1367 replies

This sucks, and I'm bummed I never got to see him perform. Was going to once but the show got cancelled
-
He does fire it in ROTJ and yes it's red

I think he was hired as a programmer. Also, Erik Wolpaw working on Psychonauts 2 doesn't make it seem like their remaining writers are all that busy. With writing projects anyway.

It is on many European keyboard layouts Annoying when using software that expects periods as decimal markers though

I think it means they aren't working on any single player games at all to be honest.
-
Don't think they charge you until it ships though.

That stings. A 970 is probably the best GPU upgrade in years though so it's not all bad. (Also, to clarify, I mean that anyone with enough money to buy the Rift probably has a 980 or more.)

I don't think it's unreasonable, they wanted to make it good enough to ensure that people don't have a bad experience with it. They have two 90 Hz OLED screens in that thing, that alone probably costs a ton. What they could've done better is communicate that this would be a very high-end consumer product. Like, what does it matter if you can run this on a 970? Anyone with that much money to throw at it probably has a 980 or more anyway. I think it's the right decision though, a bad cheap product would hurt them more than a good expensive one that will eventually come down in price.

They definitely do. That's one of my struggles with Morrowind, because the game is kind of annoying to play when you're weak, but then they give you all these ways to empower yourself and eventually remove all challenge from the game and that's boring too. I was never able to find a good medium where I enjoyed the challenges presented to me. For the same reason I struggle to play Diablo II in permadeath mode (which is my preferred way) when I play offline and can easily revive my characters, I also struggle to enjoy Morrowind the way it is. Maybe the problem is more with Morrowind's mechanics than the broken spell system, because it's essentially just a way of cheating built into the game and then the issue is that the game tempts you to cheat.

I try to buy DRM free (GoG / Humble) whenever I can and I do find myself in situations where not having to go online to authenticate is a plus, or when I'm glad a game doesn't auto update because I enjoy a specific version of it more. I like having control over the software on my computer.

Yeah I knew I had the details wrong because it's been so long, but the basic idea is the same. You can make yourself abitrarily powerful.

When I say that they're more ambitious, I mean in terms of scope. Things like putting golf and tennis games inside the game, or building an extensive cinematography tool into the game. I personally don't care about that stuff, but I do think it's impressive how they keep adding more to the games while increasing the fidelity at the same time. The one way they've dialled things back is by giving you less freedom to use the sandbox systems in the actual missions. That wasn't something that broke the old games though, but it seems like Rocktar doesn't want random systemic crap messing with their c-tier hollywood story.- 1367 replies

I agree with your first statement, it's clear that they have an insane amount of technical debt that they won't get over unless they start fresh. I disagree that they couldn't though, Skyrim is one of the best selling games of all time, F4 seems to have sold better than Battlefront! They made what was probably a $100m MMO. They can invest in new tech, and I think they have to if they want these games to keep doing as well as they are. My gut feeling is that Elder Scrolls VI on this engine would get a bit of backlash. Next gen? Forget it. I hated how hard Brad leaned into Lang's argument that you simply cannot QA these games. He's right that you can't, but that's true of so many complex software projects or even more general engineering projects. What you can do is create systems that interact more robustly, that give their scripters and quest designers better ease of use and less risk of breaking stuff. I bet you that a large reason why CDP were able to create TW3 at all is because they have developed amazing in house tools. Of course Lang isn't going to call out Bethesda on a podcast like that. He's the CEO of a company that probably wants to do business with them. Btw, it's a bit funny how Rockstar went from sacrificing polish in favour of ambition, to being cutting edge in both, whereas Bethesda started out in the latter place and have gradually sacrificed both.- 1367 replies

There are those boots in Morrowind that let you run three times as fast. You can also make potions that buff your spells and make spells that buff your potion making, then use that recursively to make yourself fly forever. Solves the traversal problem but also makes the game a bit boring.

This thread made me realise that I've hardly played any games released this year, or very many games at all really. Just Her Story and Bloodborne. Bloodborne was good but it was still a slight disappointment for me, regressing in many ways compared to Dark Souls.

I re-watched RotJ and I had forgotten how much if that movie takes place on Tatooine and the forest moon of Endor, and how bad that stuff is. All the space stuff is great but it's such a small part of the movie. TFA is definitely better.

I'm watching A New Hope and Leia's cell number is 2187 heh

I don't think it made him stronger; he was hoping it would but in reality it made him more conflicted and weakened him. I don't think he'll be redeemed though.

I think I read an interview with JJ where he said that he imagined it as BB-8 telling R2 he had the map fragment and R2 being slow to boot, then admitting that it happened that way because it worked best in the movie and there wasn't a good explanation for it.
-
I don't think it's unlikely that they'll run it into the ground, but on the other hand SW has not exactly been treated with care. I do hope they remake Ep. I-III before that point. The new stars apparently got paid a pittance, I hope they get a better deal next time because they made the movie. Also, one thing that stood out to me on a rewatch: how quickly Kylo got from the bridge of his Star Destroyer to the planet where Maz is. One moment he's watching the laser beam, then they show the people on the ground seeing it hit the planets, then he lands. Wtf?

I saw it a second time and I came out liking it a lot more.
