Crusader Kings II: The Triumph of Ragnar
dmarlett replied to Nick Breckon's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
So I think Ragnar sold another copy of Crusader Kings II. -
I really like the original version. Is the HD remake that much better?

I was tempted to buy Dark Souls again, because it is one of my greatest loves, but I see no point when I already enjoy the Ps3 version so much. It's not like they did a great port and with PC it added the "hacker" element of cheating. Still, one day when my Ps3 gives up the ghost I'll have to. I repurchased the Fallout games because they suck on ps3, I was ecstatic to only have to pay $5 each. Anyway, my booty: Alice Madness Returns Amnesia: The Dark Descent The Bard's Tale The Cave Fallout 3 Game of the Year Fallout New Vegas Ultimate Fez Incredipede The Last Remnant Metro 2033 Psychonauts Puzzle Quest Surgeon Simulator 2013 The Witcher 2

The Idle Book Log: unofficial recommendations for forthcoming Idle Thumbs Book Clubs.
dmarlett replied to makingmatter's topic in Books
I'd like to recommend a non-fiction piece, Detroit: An American Autopsy. I just started but I already know I'm in for a wild ride based on its prologue. -
Just finished the book. Part I moved me more than II or III but I still enjoyed the book. The most interesting sections involved the ongoing drama with Brett so in the lulls between her appearances I found my interest wavering on and off a little. Found it helpful to read the book in two sittings. It has the type of plot where I was afraid if I put it down I wouldn't be compelled to pick it up, which isn't a knock against the book as I really liked the prose.

I find it humorous that this book is so divisive. I've only finished Book I but it resonates with me on a personal level that's both compelling and disturbing. I say disturbing only because it dredges personal memories that tweak my emotions right in that sensitive spot (and no, not the impotent spot).

Oh man, I've been listening to Bookworm recently and every time I can barely get past the opening song. The podcast itself is really good but that intro just clashes with tone of the show.

This sale is ruining my bank account. The question is whether or not I'll play all these games by the next Summer Sale.

I live about 40 min from an amazing bookstore. It's all used but generally the books are in great condition and it is dirt cheap. Coincidentally my sister lives near there so driving that far usually is a twofer, as one of her favorite activities is book shopping. I feel your pain brother.

I spit out my thoughts on this book here. In a nutshell, I loved it. Unlike Sean I really liked the dinosaur story. The only one that lost me was The Form of Space, which started out well enough but ended a little weak. I think Calvino even references his loss of control of the story. "What you might consider straight, one-dimensional lines were similar, in effect, to lines of handwriting made on a white page by a pen that shifts words and fragments of sentences from one line to another, with insertions and cross-references, in the haste to finish an exposition which has gone through successive, approximate drafts, always unsatisfactory..."

I feel like this would have better served if it wasn't named Dead Rising 3. The tone just feels way too different but I will withhold judgement until it comes out. That being said I'm sad it was an exclusive.

That's sort of what I took from it. You spend so long fighting for every inch of ground you cover just to get to the next landmark, often at a pace which feels like a crawl. Without spoiling anything I feel it puts the player in the same mindset of the characters at the end of the story. I don't think it would have worked as well if it was shorter. Unfortunately it does it in a way that other video games just insert filler, that is with extra combat scenes and minor puzzles. That said I actually really liked the pace. It gave me a breather between intense combat/stealth sections and gave Joel and Ellie a chance to interact in a way that most video games ignore.

Bravo!

One of my favorite non-cutscene moments that jolt you back into the story

Deus Ex does have the most disturbing nonlethal takedowns. Still, it is my hope that crippling and maiming hundreds of men will lead to them to a more introspective and peaceable life. It's hard to join a rabble when you are wheelchair bound and consuming nothing but liquids. If your brain was crippled by a tranquilizer dart to the head, have I not saved you from the stresses of day to day concerns?
-
I was in the middle of Deus Ex when I picked up this game. It'll be nice to return to not murdering anyone (who isn't clearly a boss).
-
Yeah, I'm not sure why Joel would pick up so many dog tags but a lot of the other collectibles make sense to me. I love the scavenging in post apocalyptic games. Fallout was murder on my OCD. At least in The Last of Us they didn't have pointless collectibles like "tin can" and "abraxo cleaner." Everything has a purpose (except the dog tags).
-
Sadly its not the gameplay that makes this game so great but the level of polish. The sequences are so well crafted that I can't help but find something to admire in every room. I will reserve absolute judgement until I finish the game but so far it has been worth every dollar.

This game is amazing so far. I'm about 44% of the way through and so far I couldn't be more satisfied.

Excited for today. Now the whole conference will turn out to be the announcement for the Vita Slim and a $40 price drop.

Idle Book Club Episode 5: The Great Gatsby
dmarlett replied to Sean's topic in Idle Book Club Episodes
When I heard "And I'm Nick Breckon" I totally thought it was a recording. I nearly fell out of my chair when he continued to talk. -
Reading A Storm of Swords for the first time. So good...
