Strong GOSOTY contender (game over screen of the year)! It's a pretty deep metaphor for something when the selfie blocks the view for a while ("Cannot see the road with tubes for the selfies").
I was a confused modern idiot at first because the secret to vaping wasn't explained (<- collect 5 juices, then left click).

You know it's a nice gif, when you can't look at it without thinking about potential sound effects! Also, that looks kind of like the world's worst Shoryuken! (as in how effective it would be, probably gives your opponent the invincibility frames).
ps. I really hope you're able to find/make/include the freestyle sax solo.
-
All the interactions and gameplay will probably be working in some form in about 3 days, then rest of the jam is about adding sound, more graphics and random tuning and fixing. Here's some more gifs.

That's what the private Slack messages are for dibs.
Here's a song that plays faintly in the background in the alley scene (the bassline imitates a certain appropriate song) BitsRave.mp3

Although this looks a bit like somekind of an action platformer, it's more like a simple adventure game where you try to find a way to progress into the next area. There probably will be no fail state / dying, maybe somekind of grading in the end.
I now have constructed early versions of all the scenes in Photoshop. Next I will start building the areas in Gamemaker and see if I want/need to make some changes to the progression of the game.
ps: I love that Bogost in the Shell's acronym is BITS!
-
Thank you! My ancient computer crashed in a scary way today, I hope it doesn't completely die on me during the jam (my personal cyberpunk motto seems to be 'Low Tech, Low Life')
Anyhow, here's rough wip versions of the first three scenes (there will be 5 in total, I already scrapped one). In the next post I will write more about the gameplay and progression.

Jam end edit: Game is here now: https://atteo.itch.io/bogost
Bogost in the Shell
I started thinking about a potential cyberpunk game a couple of weeks ago, and while I didn't do any concrete development pre-jam (well, I did do some small audio experimentations), I now have a pretty clear and complete picture in my head what kind of a game I want to do.MegaCorp Global Dynamics is about to activate their newest product, huge mech codenamed BigGod. BigGod is clearly fundamentally dangerous to the notion of culture, so you as the expert hacker Major Bogost, must shut it down before it's too late. Ghost hacking straight into the BigGod's brain is not possible, instead you must travel through several host bodies to reach your goal.
Here's a concept image (I had some appropriate graphics to use as a placeholder)
There were two Bogosts in the first Wizard Jam, fierydrake's BitS had a really nice look! https://itch.io/jam/wizard-jam/rate/24532I have always been a big fan of this title - I made this silly mashup last year.

If you want to reach beyond the episode titles or need more inspiration for jamming, here's a list of random game ideas and jokes that I've found (by looking through the youtube annotations of every episode and copying time stamps that sounded interesting). If you find or have something in mind that is not in here, please post your findings in this thread so I can update the list.

Celebrating the hot new branding I want to photoshop everything that has a 4 in it.
-
I was brushing up my Goldblum knowledge on IMDB and noticed this topical TV film: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1980)
It has been uploaded to youtube and I think I already found the scariest scene.

Let's settle the jam #brand. I'm happy with both keeping the Winter name and renaming. This is not a serious dilemma but hey I like to overthink stuff sometimes. Here's my musings at the moment:
1. Winter Wizard Jam (2016)
+ Is already established. Sounds catchy. Has kind of a real world analogy with Olympics/Winter Olympics.
- Would have to make clear that 'winter' is not the theme (anymore).2. Dishonored Wizard Jam (2016)
+ Good way of describing a second, alternative version using a well known Idle Thumbs joke.
- New, long name, does not sound very catchy.3. Wizard Jam 4 (Unifying the naming with the spring jam)
+ Clear, traditional way of naming a thing.
- Doesn't indicate that there is some differences between the jams.4. [Theme] Wizard Jam (e.g. Winter Wizard Jam, Cyber Wizard Jam, Space Wizard Jam)
+ Prefix tells this is a spinoff jam.
- Could be confusing especially after a few years. -
Sounds cool, it's a little DibsJam inside the WizJam. And like the famous documentary Inception demonstrated, time moves slower in these kind of nested things so everyone has time to participate (in other words, I will do something).
-
Maybe this for a sweet Poirot cosplay?
"Play Now, Chew Later!"

When this current/upcoming jam has its own subforum I'll make a thread for the "(Game) Ideas from the Episodes" list - where people can easily find ideas and share if they've found new ones.

There's a good interview with Messhof on RPS regarding why they wanted to make a sequel. Multiple weapon types is probably the biggest change/addition gameplaywise.
"Kristy and I have been playing the game quite a bit since it was released, and it’s hard not to see little things that could be changed or added. I started keeping a list, and eventually it became pretty long. I started seeing ideas connect to each other and it felt like a sequel would make sense. I also wanted to tweak a few things with the original moveset, and it felt wrong to rewrite history for a game that so many people still play. Better to make it its own thing." -
That looks like a perfect toothpaste mascot! "Let's make those teeth shine! / What, you use another brand?!"
-
Seeing "Home Video" in some VHS films as a kid was pretty strange because home means mold (the stuff that grows on spoiled food) in Finnish, and video is just video.
-
I really enjoyed this! It's frustrating (but understandable) that it can't be openly available anymore but at least the developer is handling the situation well. Edited from the dev blog:
... Eventually, I learned to program in C#. Now I'm making a living as a professional programmer thanks to what I learned developing a fan game. Technically speaking, I'm satisfied.
... I added new contents, trying to be respectful about the established lore. Demo after demo people liked the game. Then the game was out, and for a brief time, players enjoyed the game they were expecting for a long time. Artistically speaking, I'm satisfied.
Please, don't hate Nintendo for all of this. It's their legal obligation to protect their IP. Instead of sending hate mail, get the original M2 from the eShop. Show them that 2D adventure platformers are still a thing people want.
Of course with all the modernization, while improving many things, the remake loses some of the original's magic. And that reminded me of this very personal and thorough Metroid 2 blog post on Gamasutra: A Maze of Murderscapes: Metroid II
Metroid II elicits moods that share a kinship with games like Silent Hill, King’s Field and Yume Nikki. Lonely games for lonely, sensitive people wherein one explores a tangentially connected series of dreamy hellscapes. The oneiric aspects of these three games are accentuated by the restricted, deliberate movements of their protagonists, as if everything were submerged in the syrupy nightmare fuel of the subconscious.

Looking forward to next year's Wizard Jam entries for this one.
Two days for making the game, 14 days for creating an elaborate Tips&Tricks Guidebook full of useful cheat codes.

What no banana peel gif?
Added. At least they are not kicking them anymore (my robot sympathies have been revealed now).
