I saw a tweet that French was NOT arrested, and he was on MSNBC after 1AM local time. I wish I could find the tweet, but someone in the journalism playpen said the police made contact with him and asked him to accompany them but he was not detained.

It's so frustrating that the re-escalation last night was essentially dick waving by the local police because they didn't like being pulled off the protest, being questioned, being criticized. If they had been in regular uniforms, 1) last night may not have happened and 2) if it had they may have been able to do their jobs.

The "S" in SWAT stands for "Special". Deploying tanks, long rifles, automatic weapons and grenades against unarmed civilians where the best excuse is "someone threw a bottle" I guess is the special we deserve for looking the other way for 15 years, encouraging profiling, and allowing departments to investigate themselves, but not the special I expect.

http://animalnewyork.com/2014/ferguson/ Photo & audio journalism. https://twitter.com/newsneighbor/status/500341931516637184 "Why was #Ferguson PD still looking for the suspect 7 hours after Brown had been killed?" There's another press conference or Q&A session (not sure which) going on with the police chief right now. There will be more reporting soon, if not more information. e: Chief said the officer did not know about the robbery and Mike Brown was not (or was not stopped for being) a robbery suspect.
-
There was a brief press conference about 20 minutes ago. They released the name of the officer who shot Mike and an incident report that suggests he and his friend had an altercation and possibly shoplifted. No information on the interaction between Brown and the officer outside of 12:01 the incident occurred and at 12:04 the second officer arrived and Mike Brown was dead. No use of force report from the police or write up from Wilson. Packet ONLY had robbery information. I highly recommend following Wesley Lowery, who is a reporter for the Washington Post, on twitter if you want to keep up with the situation. I basically got all of that info from his twitter feed. @WesleyLowery

Sadly, I don't think the president had anything to do with it. It was the most milquetoast response anyone could have asked for. It's crazy that deciding to not literally point weapons and shoot things at citizens will do to deescalate a protest situation! I am relieved that the tension in the streets seems to have been alleviated, but the previous concerns remain. First and foremost that a man was shot and killed in the street with his hands in the air for not being on a sidewalk.

Idle Thumbs 171: The Curious Case of the Rhode Island Reader
Badfinger replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I like how Smoke Orb has become instantly Thumbs'd in the cast and in this thread. As a non-Christian, I am fascinated by how Christians perceive their own religion (well, how everyone perceives their own religion but Christians are in the highest supply around here). I both admire Jake's restraint and am disappointed in the same and we got no "poopoo kazoo" which I was hotly anticipating. I LOVE CLUE. This may be the only buzzfeed article I ever link to anyone. It is not a list, it is not gifs. It is the awesome oral history of Clue. http://www.buzzfeed.com/adambvary/something-terrible-has-happened-here-the-crazy-story-of-how#34d3nd4 -
That's because the people in local militias are white people. http://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/saw-ferguson More reporting on what's happened. http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2014/8/13/2nd-shooting-ferguson.html http://america.aljazeera.com/tools/pressreleases/statement.html https://twitter.com/XaiaX/status/499810544119857153/photo/1 An Al Jazeera news crew was specifically targeted with tear gas and their equipment was dismantled. I apologize for the amount I've spent gabbing, but not my words or fervor. It affects me deeply that something like this is allowed and frankly encouraged, and at this moment I feel helpless to do anything beyond inform others.

Funny enough, Sean had a tweet that I agree with which is the opposite of what you suggest. Police forces are PART of whatever this destructive force that will terrorize innocent gun owners is. They're going to roll straight over whatever extended pistol magazine you have and not stop. https://twitter.com/vanaman/status/499324287384182784 I'm glad your police don't, either. I find it terrifying.

I have personally posted articles about Ferguson and had them shared and they're still there. I would be SHOCKED if they are deleting things.

To be clear, unchecked police violence is not being bottled up in St. Louis. http://www.theneworleansadvocate.com/home/9987387-123/nopd-shoots-man-during-traffic http://ktla.com/2014/08/12/man-hospitalized-after-being-shot-by-police-in-south-l-a/ http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/staten-island-man-dies-puts-choke-hold-article-1.1871486 And of course, Trayvon Martin was killed after been shot while unarmed and his murderer was acquitted on all charges. Not a police matter, but a gun matter. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooting_of_Trayvon_Martin

It's essentially the intersection between the War On Drugs in the 90s and as Jon was saying, military gear making its way from 10 years of occupation to local law enforcement. Those things combined with what feels like no oversight on police has essentially made them local militias. Also the fact that even 50 years after the Civil Rights movement it's still barely legal to be a black person in America, and it's boiling over.

Idle Thumbs 170: Esophagus Sarcophagus

Thankfully in the "ult" vs "ulti" fiasco of shortening words, I haven't softened. -

My experience with the people who are abusing English is not excused because they're all native speakers and not trying to appeal to non-American audiences. They're just talking in mumble, or are native English commentators. -

Oh yes, I know. What I'm saying is the people who say "ulti" are doing horrible things to language. -

The problem is that in a competitive context like the post above, the things that are being said have to be conveyed quickly and in rapid succession. So instead of saying 5 fast sentences and already being behind on description, they can say 2 jargon-y sentences and keep things together and in sync. The things I dislike are jargon for its own sake, and made up words. Also the use of "ulti" in LOMA games. That the most useless letter "I" in the entire gaming industry and I hate it. Why shorten a 3 syllable word and then add another damn useless syllable back on? Ult or ultimate or just don't say anything at all! -

You could also say Term of Art instead of jargon, but I think most people who would quibble about it are more familiar with the latter than the former. -

Re-listening to the episode, it occurred to me that calling Epic's new game The Unreal Tournament would have people calling it TUT and now I want this very much. -

I remember walking out of the movie theater thinking Prometheus was not really what I wanted from another Alien(s) film, but as its own movie was interesting if crazy and disjointed. Like 2 stars? Then the entire internet told me I actually hated it, so I don't really remember what any of those thoughts and feelings were anymore. -
It's from Chris making fun of himself, and then the Thumbs inserting that as content into the Dishonored universe.

Have any of you ever grilled pizza? It's been forever since I have, but I really want to try it again.

I personally much prefer youtube over Twitch archive for VODs, so you can also find them here! https://www.youtube.com/user/Rektreational

So! I just now took this out of the oven. 12 and a half hours later... PORK! Depending on how tender it is, I'm going to either pull it or just slice it and serve it. Quick fork test tells me pulling should probably be no problem. It's almost 10pm now, so this isn't for a meal or anything. This was just to do it because it seemed really neat and I've never done it before. Less "bark" than yours. Brown sugar/salt/paprika/garlic powder/onion powder, same basic deal. I probably just used less overall. Smells great, when I was moving in and out of the house and through the kitchen. Set the oven to 225, set the thermometer to 197 and let it rip. If I do it again I will probably do a more thorough job of defatting the piece. I mostly just did a real rough job to get the skin and big obvious chunks off before going. It's resting for another few minutes and then moment of truth. e: pulled it. It's good. I like it.

This is not really quite equivalent, but I'm interested in your thoughts. How would you feel about Danielle doing the read for Hover or Nature Box if she hasn't used/experienced them? Or any of them if the clutch Nature Dipes sponsorship finally comes through? e: Oh crap, I meant to hit post on this about 3 hours ago and all kinds of discussion happened while I failed to hit the button. I should comment once again, since I had no problem with the ad and actually signed up for a WoT account due to it directly, that my impetus was not "The Thumbs endorsed this thing, therefore it's good" but rather was a product I already had interest in and knew that finally going in for it would generate a positive result from the ad being read. If it was an ad for say, Firefall? I would not have signed up for an account because that's a hot pile of garbage! While I often get enjoyment out of the ads because they will turn silly, I have never been confused about when the ad read portions of the cast are happening. I've always been able to tell that there's a cut away from stream of consciousness podcast to ad read. And that's fine! If reading ads for domain registrars, crunchy hippie snacks and c00l nerd swag boxes for $13.37 a month helps keep Idle Thumbs what it is and gives it the potential to expand occasionally past just casting a pod into my face for once a week, go for it. I don't know if many of you are Giant Bombcast fans as well, but they promised their premium subscribers would never have to hear ads. When they ran them, I preferred to listen to the non-premium cast with ad reads because Jeff and Vinny made a story out of them and it was often funny. It was more podcast, and I always want more podcast. I feel the same way about these ad reads. Without Nature Box, I would never have heard Chris's plaintive plea for peas. It's not that I WANT ads, but there is either enough freedom or the podcasts I like take enough liberty with them that they're still potentially entertaining. If you, Sean, Chris, Jake and Danielle are uncomfortable with them, it's not like you'll upset me that they're gone. But knowing they're good for the podcast is good enough for me.
