  1. Idle Food - Cooking!

I made some delicious but not photogenic tomato sauce, and then used that to make some delicious but not photogenic chicken parmesan.

I think Led Zepplin is the greatest rock band in history, but that band hasn't existed since before I was born. Other nominations in the last 2 years include Black Sabbath, David Bowie, Neil Young, U2 and Tom Petty. Do the Grammys not know that modern rock music exists? It seems like a really marginalized category, I guess. I really like Beck, but I browsed through his album and that is definitely not rock music. There are barely even any drums in it. I don't even know what the "imperial" unit of food energy would be! Someone recently was really worried that they didn't know what a kCal was, and I was like "that's a calorie. A regular calorie is actually a kilo calorie." The way I keep track of food is I have a home scale that weighs in grams. Combined with either an established rubric (which I use) or a calorie counting website is how I keep track. The one snag in my setup is I'm also trying to track by macronutrient, so I'm extremely reluctant to have one-dish meals because then I can't accurately measure things out.
  3. I Had A Random Thought...

Yeah, I'm operating on the idea that "breakthrough" is the significant role, if not leading/starring, which is directly the reason everyone stands up and takes notice. If we were to agree that Jen Lawrence's breakthrough was Winter's Bone in 2010, the reason she wasn't a major role/top billed in X-Men in 2011 is likely because that film already had its stars and principal was probably already in the can before Winter's Bone was released.

Does anyone care about award shows? I just learned that Led Zepplin won a Grammy for Best Rock Album last year. What in every hell? I listen to an awful lot of rock. Is no one actually putting out albums? I also learned from Merus' post that people measure food energy in something other than calories! Neat!
  5. In many ways the company you are describing in this sentence is Blizzard.
  6. I Had A Random Thought...

Jovovich's "breakthrough" role was also Dazed and Confused, A-List or no.
  7. I Had A Random Thought...

Just to be clear, A-List is biggest name, most marketable, popularest. It has nothing to do with acting or likability, although those things are nice. I think only for Linda Hamilton is that a "breakthrough" role, although if I'm being mean but honest it's pretty much her only role.
  8. I Had A Random Thought...

If you've only ever seen someone once, they probably aren't an A-List actor. Michelle Yeoh is who you're thinking of. Tomorrow Never Dies definitely wasn't her breakout role, but I guess the SuperCop stuff was action?
  9. I Had A Random Thought...

On a related note, anyone in a position of authority like that should never tell someone they're lucky "just" to have jobs. Because screw you.
  10. I would be curious to hear about being in more than two groups.
  11. Life

Hi I haven't apologized for men in general lately. This seems like an appropriate time. I'm really sorry about men. I wish there was more I could do.
  12. I Had A Random Thought...

    Yes it is.
  13. I Had A Random Thought...

They are pretty famous, at least en los Estados Unidos over here. Network TV, SNL, etc. The announced cast and crew so far is basically the same as made Bridesmaids, which is the lady version of The Hangover. Melissa McCarthy got nominated for Best Supporting Actress. They have the famous part. They don't have the comedy I enjoy, for instance Ghostbusters, part.

If they deliver to the UK, you should look at Monoprice. Fantastically cheap, good customer service/return policy. You can get a 75 foot extension cable for less than $5!!
  15. I very much doubt it. Valve makes money on every transaction so unless they uncovered a way people were laundering money or something insidious I would think they'd like to encourage sales. Twig, which part would you find fun? Doing something to get the gold star very often isn't fun for me. Doing an achievement because undertaking that method of play would be fun is good. Trying to get something by rote because the goal is getting the achievement is usually not. It sounds like Ben's friend's motivation was "get a pop up notification" rather than "do a creative thing".
  16. Idle Thumbs Episode Skipping

I bought Instacast, I'm happy to drop the money on an app I use literally hours a day. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something with a free to try option.
  17. I Had A Random Thought...

Ghostbusters 4 Lyfe crew reppin. The original is a comedy classic, and Jake's entire argument against 2 seems to be that they steer the Statue of Liberty with an NES Advantage. Frankly, that's a point in its favor. It's fine. It's been billed as a "reboot". The reason I'm against it is these ladies in particular. I'm ambivalent about Kristen Wiig, but I find Melissa McCarthy dreadfully unfunny. Casting these women screams formulaic, familiar comedy with a wrapper you're familiar with to me.
  18. Idle Thumbs Episode Skipping

The app store is telling me Downcast is $3 flat and Overcast is limited free and then $5 overall. I don't see a free up front option to try Downcast, although I do listen to Giant Bomb premium podcasts that require password access.
  19. Net Neutrality

Yes, awesome! I have been advocating making the internet a utility for probably longer than I had a good grasp on what that would entail. Outside of straight up voting against the suggestions, what would the potential roadblocks be for enacting regulation like this?
  20. Idle Thumbs Episode Skipping

Thanks! I have been using Instacast since I got an iphone, and I was trying to figure out which sort-of podcast related thread to ask this question. Do you have a winner out of those two or a reason to pick each over the other?

I definitely think Jon's idea is worth a try. If the wires are getting moved, then the cord length maybe IS an issue. I asked in-ear or over because the Wirecutter (it is a good website ok?) has a recommendation for in-ear and I'm not that sort of person. http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-exercise-headphones/
  22. Sean, I'm not a big "OMG SPOILERS" person, but I think that's the one. One day I will finish your game. I really like it. (I started playing it together with a girlfriend, and I broke up before we finished the game. For some reason though, that's still "our" game save.) You didn't spoil it for me (neither in the sense of "gave away" or ruined), it just feels like that's one that shouldn't be spoiled. If Valve is doing weird stuff with the Dota economy, now's the right time to try Legal Legends. This is possibly a joke?
  23. Life

Do you maybe need just a longer cord, or a cord extension to keep it from yanking? Are you an in-ear or over ear for cycling?
  24. Twitter :)

I really like her too! The Toast is hysterical. I was pretty nervous about tweeting her, I'll be honest. I've seen her go to town on some guys. Most of them 100% deserve it and are mansplaining jerkbags and I don't think I'm that or represent myself that way, but some of them seemed innocuous (to me). I guess I've never even thought about it much before, but my Twitter profile doesn't identify my gender except for me saying things about it directly.
  25. Twitter :)

Mallory Ortberg retweeted a silly dumb thing I said the other day and it made me feel really good, especially because I am A Boy.
