At work, general end-of-month ramp up to get things out the door combined with two trade shows worth of marketing materials coming back at the same time has made it a little bit crazy. On the plus side, I personally am feeling very little stress from this job. I'm almost at the point where I hit 90 days and swap to permanent status, and my job responsibilities have already expanded beyond the previous person's in this position (this is a good thing). When I was asking about that, I got a nice compliment from a co-worker. Plus next week will slow down, and I'm excited for all sorts of fun shenanigans to come out of GDC (and PAX, holy crap). I lost 4 pounds this week at our official company health challenge weigh in. I'm going out just for funsies this weekend. The company is throwing us a pizza party today. So pretty good thank you for asking!

Idle Thumbs 199: Bogost in the Shell

Out of curiosity, why do you feel that's a thing that needs to be fixed? -

I saw that you had it correct in "games discussed" on the podcast page, so I wasn't going to pile on. I have never seen an episode of Are You Afraid Of The Dark. I didn't like scary stuff as a kid. I continue to not like scary stuff as a really big kid. -

I completely revamped my deadlift this week! My back wasn't neutral, and I was having trouble figuring out how to fix it. Looked at some tips, and I realized my approach to the bar was completely off, which threw everything else off as well. Crazy difference in the lift, now! I don't think it's fixed any issues in strength (I'm not going to up my deadlift suddenly, the lift still felt heavy), but I think I will much more effectively build strength/stability and definitely avoid lower back issues. I finally sprung for some lifting chalk and a lil' bag as a reward! After 3 straight weigh-ins of slightly gaining weight but losing body fat %, I finally jumped forward and made gains. 4lbs down from last week. I know some of that is water weight, because my body fat % crept up very, very slightly, but I'm still happy to have made progress. I decided to add a cardio day in between my lift days. I hate, hate, hate running, treadmills, ellipticals, all of it. But I did the bike for ~15 and the rowing machine for ~10 plus a really good stretch and foam roll. Danielle and Thumbs that are runners- how do you do it? Running exhausts me (duh), but mentally as well as physically. After 20 minutes of almost any cardio, I'm horribly bored. I don't find a "zone", and my mindset to running has always been "What's the goal of distance running? To finish and stop. I'm ahead of the game." I have never minded running in sports because the point isn't just to move forward. I can't get over that hump.

I bought a bottle of G&J Greenall's gin, which is a brand I'd never seen before. Apparently they're one of the oldest gin producers in the UK, they make Bombay among others, but this is the first I've ever seen the bottle. I enjoyed it. Light, good in a G&T without a lime (which I didn't have). This has INCREDIBLY MIXED REVIEWS. On one site the 10-12 comments were almost all overwhelmingly positive, 4-5 stars. On another, which reviewed the gin unfavorably, they were almost all negative. I feel like I got decent value for $15 and the bottle looks cool.

Bringing it back to the Academy Awards, I learned from the Bombcast that Speedtree won an Oscar. This basically forgives all the garbage that the show is, and awards.

To be clear, I do not think that. I don't appear to be conveying that well at all.

This is exactly the thing I was attempting to say, by the way. It's not that I don't understand conceptually, I just can't relate in any way. Apple Cider, I had originally omitted the words "genitals" and "wrong" because I didn't want my post to be about them, but it read better for me when I included them. As to why I said genitalia, it's because nearly 20 years ago I took a class that explained that Boys have a Penis and Girls have a Vagina. it's just a base way of introducing my misgivings to the conversation. As to "it still feels good to sit and think "does 'being a woman' still feel like something I am?" and it is!", I honestly can't even grasp this. Within myself, that's never been a question I've ever had to ask. And maybe it's ignorance or stubbornness, but I don't know that it's something I need to ask of myself. But like I said, it's my frustration at grasping the whole thing that makes me want to share that to a group who do. I'm not opposed to thinking those things of other people or respecting who they are. I am in favor of it. As someone who sometimes goes out of their way to not have to say people's names, and on occasion having to work really hard to remember the names of people I would call good friends, that is not actually the tension-easing thought you think it is.

I gotta be honest, the revelation that making my own marinara may actually be easier than doctoring stuff out of a jar has really been amazing, and it is much more delicious. The downside is then wanting to make and eat pasta, which is extremely easy to go overboard on in the diet I'm trying to follow.

I have a hard time wrapping my head around someone being transgender. To explain what I mean, while I'm heterosexual, the concept of homosexuality or bisexuality is easy for me to grasp and understand. I feel certain ways towards certain people, and on a physiological level some of those feelings and tendencies I have no control over. I'm programmed that way. Homosexual people are exactly the same, they just have different preferences. I have no concept though, of feeling like I've been born with the wrong genitalia for my actual gender or that I do not belong to a gender. This is to say that I don't have an issue with someone being transgender or that I don't understand the concept of it. I just have a frustrating time in my head of grasping what it is and what it's like and how to approach it. I don't believe I have anyone particularly close to me that is transgender.

In my opinion storming the (playing surface) owns. It's just overused. I was on the field when my school's football team won the National Championship, so I may be somewhat biased on that perspective.

If there's an aisle that says "Italian" it's a good bet you can get those sorts of things there. Tip on thickening chili: unless you're really hungry or are going to bed or something, you can let it cook down as long as you'd like as long as you stir it every once in a while. Also beans. It looks like there are a nice chunk of beans in your chili already, but they can definitely thicken things up. Funny enough, I can't find chiles in adobo in "regular" grocery stores around me, unless they are just completely hidden. I have to go to the Gigante to get them. Usually it reminds me I should go to the Gigante more often because there's so much cool stuff there.

The reason it's useful and not just a fun novelty is enemy difficulty increases based on levels completed, so if you are flat out skipping levels the curve is lower. Also if you are a bad enough dude to sit on the nuclear throne that extra 5 minutes might be valuable to you in a run.
-
I really enjoy this game as a micro-session experience. "I have 47 seconds? Nuclear Throne." I've played dozens and dozens of games (mostly quite short), but it says my playtime is 2 hours. I learned a neat trick from another forum I believe, for a level skip. I'll spoiler it in case anyone doesn't want to know. I really like that, because it's spelunky-esque.

Following you down the off topic rabbit hole, I really, really liked The Recluce Saga until I got about 8 books in and he was just writing literally the same book with different characters over and over. I think there are some extremely interesting ideas in those books, though. I remember having grandiose ideas to the hilarious extreme for game ideas based on those books and the way magic worked in them for a MUD I was playing as a teenager. Named a character after that stuff, too.

Offworld, an economic RTS from Soren Johnson

Double postin' http://www.twitch.tv/day9tv Day9 is streaming OTC, and has been all day. It is fascinating to watch other people play. he seems fine with running a 200k debt, but he'll scrape to build a silicon plant instead of buying it when the price is $1. -

It's a common sports game trope, for sure. -

I dove in on this yesterday. Went in halvsies with my dad. This could be amazing, and it could be terrifying. e: Oh my god. "Get your assets to Mars" is perfect. -

Speak candidly about literally anything, ever? Remember when Skullgirls did crowdfunding to expand their game, with explicit information about what they were asking for, why they were promising what they did, why it seemed like so much money for a seemingly small thing, and how the money would be allocated? Then they raised $800k instead of $150k? https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/keep-skullgirls-growing Remember when Peter Molyneux swore up and down that Fable: The Journey was not a rail shooter in any way, shape, or form, and you would have a deep, meaningful connection to your horse Cinnamon*, and then 100% of the game was an on-rails light gun game and you interacted with your horse by cleaning it with a little Wiimote-esque hand? The issue isn't that features aren't working, or even that they can't deliver what was promised. It's the constant evasion, and protestation. Or even the admission that they bit off more than they can chew, instead of pointing the finger at the entire industry and say that they've caught a cold that's a symptom of all game development. At least Chris Roberts has a game on the books that is what he set out to make. *Not actually the horse's name. It's just a damn good name for a horse. -

My first avatar ever (not here) was Hannibal loving it when a plan came together. I am pleased with that. My current is a request I got in an avatar thread years and years ago. Brian Dawkins will step on Eli Manning forever, somewhere.

Idle Thumbs 198: Missing Molyneux

I don't agree with that at all. I think it reflects on Walker, this interview is definitely who he is as a writer and interviewer: a potentially inflammatory guy who is willing to throw things out to see if he's right that they stick, Molyneux, this interview is definitely who he is as a personality: a sympathetic, smooth talking visionary who can't actually fully substantiate many of the things he claims, and their rapport together. They have definitely had one on one time before. I know for sure RPS has done a good deal with Molyneux. They have some, by game industry standards, pretty scathing headlines and pieces about him, Curiosity, Godus, etc going back three years now. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/?s=molyneux How do Walker and Molyneux, both of whom as far as I'm concerned lived up to their reputation, have anything to do with someone like Patrick Klepek getting candid interview time with a beleaguered developer? You have to trade on your own work, not on "Games Journalism" as some sort of umbrella, nor "Game Development" for that matter. If someone is willing to be candid and forthcoming, why should they be concerned about this kind of interview taking place? You can make an agreement prior to not discuss things. And you can always end a conversation if things become vitriolic. I really would be interested in Sean's thoughts. One of the articles in the link is his sit-down with Molyneux a couple of years ago.
