  1. Well, I'm admittedly stubborn about these kinds of things. For instance, I could have gone to bed and then gotten up today and figured out if the 32 bit client would let you install 64 bit Windows, instead of formatting and installing 5 times. I could have seen that I'd accidentally installed Home instead of Pro. I could have noticed the 32 bit install literally a week ago and just dealt with it then. There are extenuating circumstances - why in the world did it do the 32 bit install instead of the 64? But I have done just about the hardest run through all the Windows Install variables I can think of being available. I was thinking about how I'd brought it on myself for not being patient, but then I remembered I totally did the normal upgrade path and then it straight bricked my computer.
  2. Because your grandparents have a 32 bit processor in their computer and they are going to ask you if the "upgrade" button is a virus. So, wall of text lessons learned: download only the version of windows you need, and download ONLY the architecture you need. Don't get the complete package, because it'll invariably screw up.
  3. Yep, worked right away once I had the right version installed. It was confirmed that a few weeks ago there was an issue with the authentication servers working, though. So the answer is at least 6 and at least 2 respectively. Apparently, if you choose the dual install media creation - there is an option to download the 32 bit version, the 64 bit version, and a joint 32/64 - it just... installs the 32 bit version? There's no option to choose. However, once you're in a 32 bit environment you can't download the 64 bit creation tool. I was extremely tired and frustrated, so it's totally possible that you can download the 32 bit TOOL for the 64 bit VERSION but it didn't even occur to me to check. So I ended up doing what all the tech support said I should do last week, which was reinstall Windows 7, because I was sure that was a 64 bit environment. This was after I had done a clean install (again) of Win 10 from my media to check that I didn't screw up (again) and just missed the option to get the 64 bit version, because I am 100% sure I at least included the option to install it. It installed the 32 bit version. So I installed Windows 7. My key is a good, but I was so resistant to reinstalling it the other week because I know it won't activate. Don't ask me how this works, but I can call tech support and they go "oh ok" and give me a new key. So I couldn't upgrade - I had to do a clean install. BUT! I forgot Win 7 didn't have drivers for my ethernet port. My plan was - get back into the 64 bit environment, download a fresh copy of the 64 bit media creation tool that was 64 bit only, install that. Except I stupidly don't have my motherboard driver cd, it's at my dad's house when I stored stuff there. So I REINSTALLED Windows 10 even though I knew it would be 32 bit. Downloaded my motherboard drivers to my usb drive. Reinstalled windows 7. Tried to do the media upgrade - didn't work because win 7 wasn't activated, as above. Downloaded the 64 bit creation tool for the 64 bit version. Apparently, I didn't? Because I did a fresh install of windows 10, and it was STILL the 32 bit version. So I installed windows 7 AGAIN, installed drivers, formatted my usb drive, downloaded and installed the media creation tool AGAIN, and installed Windows 10 AGAIN. It's the 64 bit version, which I verified right before I posted the above message at 4am. Why do I care about Windows 10, again? How is this supposed to be an easier, friendlier version of Windows? The Home vs Pro angriness debacle was my fault, although no one was able to help me debunk it on the Microsoft end. This was decidedly NOT my fault, at least in the sense that why would I assume a tool that says it is for the 32 and 64 bit versions ALWAYS install the 32 bit version? Maybe I'm dumb for thinking I should get the broadest available platform to cover my bases. Maybe I'm dumb.
  4. Who wants to play "Guess how many times Badfinger installed Windows and downloaded the Windows Media Creation Tool tonight"?
  5. uhhh.... help? Why in the fuckhell would this happen? Absolutely, 100% sure that this was not occurring in Windows 7. e: I'm guessing the answer is right in front of me, that it's the 32 bit version of windows. Why would that have installed, when I downloaded the 64 bit media driver software? Do I have to install this fucking thing AGAIN? This is fucking clownshoes.
  6. Idle Thumbs 224: Ms. Petman

One of the best things about living in the greater Philadelphia area is the wildly increased chance of seeing The Roots at municipal events.
  7. ^^^^ OH MY GOODNESS. As a non-Metal Gearsperson, you definitely don't need to spoiler any of that stuff because it's like a decade old and also I don't know what the hell any of it means anyway.
  8. Rob I think I'm picking up what you're putting down, but I also think I disagree with you. Baseball is such a weird sport, in that everything is individualized. It was my first and still highest sports love, but man it's such a strange thing. Almost no other team disciplines can be measured the same way. The hitter in front of you doesn't have to be your friend. He doesn't have to communicate with you. If he hits the ball damn hard, and you do as well, you're both doing your job. If he hates you, or today's starting pitcher, he's still going to try to hit the ball as hard as he can, and make every defensive play. I see LoMas especially as closer to a basketball team, or maybe specifically a football offensive line. If you have chemistry issues, they can maybe be overcome with overwhelming superior talent on the basketball court, but one bad egg can spoil the bunch. Doubly so for an offensive line. They (from the outside looking in) seem to be one of the closest knit groups in sports. Unlike baseball or basketball, so much of what they do is group-based training and communication. That's not to say there aren't team drills, but a basketball player can practice free throws for as long as they want to spur individualized improvement, where a lineman can't practice adjusting blocking assignments on their own. You probably have, and I have, played enough ranked or full team LoMa games to know that even at our casual old guy level it's better to go along willingly with a really terrible idea than to not walk headlong into certain doom. All it takes is for one voice out of five to say "no" to completely sink a team. On top of that, so many of these teams live together, and train together. I can imagine team chemistry and cohesion matters quite a lot in the extracurricular even if it doesn't come match day. The other obvious part of this that differs from sports, and frankly probably from other gaming teams, is that the players made this decision. The team manager issued a statement that basically says "I'm staying out of this". Still, ppd makes the case that Arteezy is an elite talent, it allows greater flexibility for the team going forward, and it is possibly the best strategic move overall for EG. The only way to know for sure is to wait and see, like every other controversial roster move.
  9. Oh man, such a good idea to post links! Throwing a couple else in that might be useful? http://abiosgaming.com/ - A complete eSports calendar converted to your IP's time zone. Like, complete to the point that HON is included. http://wiki.teamliquid.net/ - The OG competitive gaming wiki. Very comprehensive coverage of DOTA 2, Starcraft, HotS, CS:GO http://lol.esportspedia.com/ Comprehensive League wiki. Decent CoD and Smite sections. For everything else, there is Liquipedia. e: Andrew I'm upset with you for using the colloquial form of "begs the question".
  10. Ferguson

    Complete insanity.
  11. I imagine they are looking for investors who are going to throw in more than a thousand bucks, in which case being an accredited investor is both just important from the people receiving investment, and also probably important to be legal, n' stuff.
  12. Idle Workouts

I'm actually surfacing my feelings about JRPGs.
  13. Idle Workouts

It's true, I don't. I would suggest it's also true you don't know why exercise is fun. Maybe for the same reasons?!
  14. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

I played a MUD for a long-ass time that very definitely thought about this, took it into account, and implemented it in a mechanical way. All the parts of combat were skill based, augmented by a number of factors. So your offense was based on the number of levels you had in your weapon plus encumbrance, permanent stat points, armor hindrance, balance, and positioning. Your defense was based on whether you could parry, evasion, shield if you were using a shield, the amount of emphasis you placed on each of these, armor skill, armor effectiveness, and then also encumbrance, balance, etc. THEN these factors were further influenced by spell boosts (usually buffs, but occasionally curses), injuries - external and internal wounds, bleeding, external and internal scars, nerve damage and scarring from the magic system, fatigue, overall advantage or disadvantage in combat. THEN THEN these factors were influenced by positioning and number of opponents. There was very literally a combat skill called "multi-opponent" that wasn't ever directly applied, but influenced how well you could handle fighting more than one Thingie at a time. So if you could totally take on one Rock Troll with no trouble, that didn't necessarily mean that two Rock Trolls was only slightly more difficult. If you were facing one, but the other one was flanking you, that had a different impact than if it was behind you. If you had only ever done combat in a way that you rarely fought more than one opponent, you might be in serious trouble if you didn't really quickly kill something when a second one showed up. And that's how one dragon is easy to handle but three goblins is a corpse run. I think at some point they got rid of the Multi Opponent skill, either replacing it or rolling it into something else. It wasn't additive and hard to train properly at level.
  15. Idle Workouts

If you think this, then exercise is fun, is the point I'm making.
  16. Idle Workouts

I also thought this until I found an exercise routine that wasn't boring. It's like JRPGs except there's actually a light at the end of the tunnel.
  17. Idle Workouts

I'm always most sore on the second day after a resistance workout. Like Griddlelol, I'm the most most sore the second day after the first resistance workout in a while. So, your experience sounds completely normal with what I would categorize as "exercising".
  18. Fallout 4 — Boston Makes Me Feel Good

Me too. Bethesda has succeeded wildly.
  19. That was really good! I still have so much love for Night Court Giant Bomb. Every once in a while I'll fire it up and have a smile.
  20. League of Legends - Road to Worlds Season 5

Jatt does have some of the same sounds as Catch, but I feel like they're going for an All-22 reference, which is the NFL coaches' film where all 22 players are shown on the screen through the entire play. That seems somehow both less and more esoteric. http://www.nfl.com/coachesfilm
  21. League of Legends - Road to Worlds Season 5

e: Hat tip to sclpls who totally posted this in the Esports Today thread and I missed it. https://www.idlethumbs.net/forums/topic/10343-esports-today-81115-reliving-the-international/?p=375869 Just postin' up a storm here. Renegades won the NA CS (Challenger Series) this weekend, earning the auto-invite to the LCS for Spring 2016. That means that Maria "Remilia" Creveling is the first woman to make it to the professional scene in League of Legends. http://lol.esportspedia.com/wiki/Renegades http://lol.esportspedia.com/wiki/DreaMCatcheR She was up in the air about actually staying on the team after qualification, but last I heard has decided to keep playing.
  22. League of Legends - Road to Worlds Season 5

Since a couple of people actually watch these - do you watch any of the pre or post-game analysis? The links were to basically the full broadcast, but I go straight through to actual action and sometimes don't even watch picks/bans. I feel similarly to sports, where if I want more in depth coverage I will seek it out myself. I don't give a fuck about all the extra bluster and "having to play within yourself" and "they're really relaxed/nervous" all of that bullshit. With that said, I am immensely surprised with how good both (this is a bad name) and are. I checked out all of them and I learned some things on a level that I was interested to know.
  23. League of Legends - Road to Worlds Season 5

I actually assume most people who might read this either A) know the outcome of these already b ) don't care, or C) but in deference to the fact that someone might be seeing this for the first time I spoilered outcomes and analysis. I'll set the statute of limitations to a day or so, because I don't want every post to be a spoiler post.
  24. I would be really interested, if anyone has the interest, for people who have the same low level of knowledge about LoL and DOTA, to check out a couple pro LoL games. I am curious if the incomprehension is just inherent to LoMas, or if the presentations of one or another make them easier to understand. Relatedly, just posted links and spoilered recap to all the LCS Semis that finished today for League.
