  1. Idle Thumbs 91: The Clapper

    Minerva's Bountiful Den of Prejudice.
  2. Discworld

I also really recommend his non-Discworld stuff, ie. Nation and Good Omens. He's even better when he's a bit outside his comfort zone.
  3. Hard disk fail

SSDs make things so much faster that if you can afford them it's silly not to use them, but it is a good idea to be aware of the risks. I personally don't use large data files so I just put my programs on the SSD and the data they affect on the HDD. That way the stuff I care about is safe and everything runs quickly. Alternatively just have an automatic backup running that copies your data from the SSD to the HDD every day or so.
  4. Disney buys Lucasfilm

Your skin is soft. Not like grass. I hate grass.
  5. The servers are currently down unfortunately, the amount of players has exceeded their wildest imaginings apparently (already up to 70K concurrent players before stuff started crashing again if reports are to be believed). I'm playing a hardcore minion witch at the moment (Twitchcrafty), it's a lot of fun.
  6. OK finally got my book in the mail. So far I'm loving it! It's really reminding me of Illuminatus! in a lot of good ways; the humour, the surreality, the many levels of plot intertwining, the ridiculous names, the sex, drugs and music... Excellent. Much more readable than Gravity's Rainbow for sure. I'm glad I let you fellas talk me into this one.
  7. Solium Infernum

I found Armageddon Empires to be the most fun. It's reasonably easy to get into with this great tutorial. I really didn't get Solium Infernum of Six Gun Saga when I tried the demos.
  8. I would love to hear the Thumbs talk about Ryszard Kapuściński's work. Especially his Afrikan books because they have that Far Cry 2 feel to them.
  9. Ni No Kuni

I'm sure the developers are tickled pink
  10. That's a great couple of posts Stephen, thanks for elucidating.
  11. Life

Ha, nice! Sounds lovely. A friend of mine moved to Den Bosch from Groningen a year or so back, we still see him up here for boardgames about once a month. He says it's really nice.
  12. Who is the Great American Novelist?

Having just read Moby Dick due to the Idle Book Club, I am definitely in the Melville fanclub. There are eminently skippable parts but when he's good oh man is he good. Just read this chapter. By midnight the works were in full operation. We were clear from the carcase; sail had been made; the wind was freshening; the wild ocean darkness was intense. But that darkness was licked up by the fierce flames, which at intervals forked forth from the sooty flues, and illuminated every lofty rope in the rigging, as with the famed Greek fire. The burning ship drove on, as if remorselessly commissioned to some vengeful deed. So the pitch and sulphur-freighted brigs of the bold Hydriote, Canaris, issuing from their midnight harbors, with broad sheets of flame for sails, bore down upon the Turkish frigates, and folded them in conflagrations. The hatch, removed from the top of the works, now afforded a wide hearth in front of them. Standing on this were the Tartarean shapes of the pagan harpooneers, always the whale-ship's stokers. With huge pronged poles they pitched hissing masses of blubber into the scalding pots, or stirred up the fires beneath, till the snaky flames darted, curling, out of the doors to catch them by the feet. The smoke rolled away in sullen heaps. To every pitch of the ship there was a pitch of the boiling oil, which seemed all eagerness to leap into their faces. Opposite the mouth of the works, on the further side of the wide wooden hearth, was the windlass. This served for a sea-sofa. Here lounged the watch, when not otherwise employed, looking into the red heat of the fire, till their eyes felt scorched in their heads. Their tawny features, now all begrimed with smoke and sweat, their matted beards, and the contrasting barbaric brilliancy of their teeth, all these were strangely revealed in the capricious emblazonings of the works. As they narrated to each other their unholy adventures, their tales of terror told in words of mirth; as their uncivilized laughter forked upwards out of them, like the flames from the furnace; as to and fro, in their front, the harpooneers wildly gesticulated with their huge pronged forks and dippers; as the wind howled on, and the sea leaped, and the ship groaned and dived, and yet steadfastly shot her red hell further and further into the blackness of the sea and the night, and scornfully champed the white bone in her mouth, and viciously spat round her on all sides; then the rushing Pequod, freighted with savages, and laden with fire, and burning a corpse, and plunging into that blackness of darkness, seemed the material counterpart of her monomaniac commander's soul. I mean, seriously.
  13. The ship: fruitcake steam cruise.

This has not been claimed yet FYI
  14. Life

Modern internet ordering is amazing. Our washing machine broke, we ordered a new one at 20:00 last night, and at 8.20 this morning the doorbell rang and some dudes took the old one and put in the new one. This is the future, people. Congrats Rodi! Guess you're in the Randstad? Which company if it's not too much to post publicly?
  15. Old Computer Magazines

I have very fond memories of reading Mean Machines with their crazy little cartoons for all the writers/editors. It steered most of my Megadrive purchases, almost always in good directions.
  16. DOTA 2

Riot listens. I'm not going to get into a league vs. dotes argument, that shit's been done to death. There's a male version of the succubus so it's not inherently sexist.
  17. Photos of things

    Oh gosh, that's lovely.
  18. Could you explain how to derive entertainment from Gravity's Rainbow? It's very irritating having that thing on my shelves mocking me for hating it.
  19. The quality of the animation and voice-acting in 3 is just phenomenal. Easily my favourite, despite 1 having better jokes probably. Also this
  20. The ship: fruitcake steam cruise.

After getting Ysbreker's gift (<3) I now have an extra copy sitting in my inventory, so I'll pay that forward to the first person to ask on Steam.
  21. DOTA 2

I didn't get an invite from a 'bowlercaptain' as far as I'm aware. There seems to be only one bowlercaptain on steam (http://steamcommunity.com/id/sompm) so I added that guy; if that's not you I dunno. I found that the item/hero knowledge largely accumulated through two channels: playing games and picking random, and building the recommended stuff, and watching pro matches and listening to the commentary. I currently tend to play more LoL games because they take shorter than Dotes and are also more forgiving to me sucking (ie. I don't lose all my gold for playing badly).
  22. Guns and gun control

Bah, leave it to open source guys to turn an awesome name into something unfunny
  23. Guns and gun control

dotcom idea: despotify.com It dictates what you listen to.
  24. Awesome TED Talks (and similar enlightening lectures)

I found this to be an excellent accompanying article. e: to the sugar video I posted on the previous page.
