Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth
osmosisch replied to colinp's topic in Strategy Game Discussion
The first two Hyperion books are good but I'd advise not to read any more of Simmons' stuff because I at least found it poor enough that it retroactively tainted my enjoyment of Hyperion. Kind of like the Ender's Game/Scott Card situation. -
Obligatory Comical YouTube Thread II: The Fall of YouTube

I was really hoping this story would end up being all about ethics in games journalism -
Deutschessehrpräzisesgeisteszustandsleihewort would be my take e: Dutch can also do these but they don't look as cool: Duitsextreempreciesgeestesgesteldsheidswoord

The thing to me is, the idea that gamergate has anything to do with ethics is so laughable that it's not actually ridiculing per se to reframe the things they actually say by adding some pictures - just revealing that the emperor has no clothes as it were. There's a long and proud tradition of pointing out inconsistencies between word and deed in such a manner. I agree with your general point that being needlessly offensive is probably not productive, but disagree that knock-knock jokes and image macros are anything of the sort.

Your visual design sensibilities are a joy to behold, BigJKO.

That's amazing, thanks for linking it. It's both heartening and disheartening to me because I am on-and-off working on a design of my own that closely mirrors this idea, but with the capitalist social system as a focus rather than colonialism. One player controls 99% of the wealth, the rest shares the other 1%. It's heartening that it's clearly possible to succeed, but disheartening to probably have to rethink things to be more distinct.

I think this game might be more fun if you're bad at this kind of game. I've never had my combo higher than 30ish and the various ensuing mishaps and escapades are endlessly entertaining to me. The plot is just...there.

Idle Thumbs 180: Wars and Pieces
osmosisch replied to Chris's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I didn't know Tom Bissell helped with the writing, that puts the game way higher on my priority list. I adore his stuff. -
While I think overall his points about culture and morality/judgement may be valid, I find it really hard in the current climate of GGers appropriating this kind of language not to knee-jerk and dismiss an article so chock-full of italics, jargon, and stressing the lack of objective facts used when judging him. I haven't read any of his books so I can't judge the content angle.

Python is generally the OO education language of choice in my environs, along with Java. C++ comes with the whole memory/pointer thing which just distracts. Tangentially, I'd recommend trying out functional programming as well (my poison of choice is Clojure) because it's a very useful direction to think in, in my experience. The functional mode of thought eliminates a lot of annoying bugs caused by functions with side-effects.

Tangentially, I thought Makers was pretty good though the sex scene is abominable as tends to be the rule for nerd writers. Interesting hypotheticals about 3D printing, and a cool setting with mostly flawed and interesting characters. It's still more of an overt agenda book than I usually enjoy, and it's a bit fetishistic of tech, but I expected that going in so it didn't detract much for me.

Idle Thumbs 179: Shadow of Something

He really was a supremely likeable person. I had a couple of records of him reading from his work that I treasured. http://www.amazon.com/J-R-R-Tolkien-Reads-Hobbit-Fellowship/dp/B000KFVSHY He just sounds so pleasant. -

Gorm's right as usual http://lotr.wikia.com/wiki/Black_Uruks e: spoke too soon a bit, that's movie stuff. Here's a fun thread with a lot of discussion on the subject. My understanding's always followed the -hai = partially human (see also Olog-hai). http://www.thetolkienforum.com/showthread.php?2146-Uruks-vs-Uruk-hai -
I think they're braids, which I think isn't quite as bad.
