  1. Idle Thumbs 212: DMCA Dad

I thought Brothers was lovely. It gave me several powerful emotional experiences, and the whale-jumping part and the Giant's battlefield are some of my favourite Video game 'levels' of all time just on atmosphere. There's also such a wealth of little touches to give character to each brother that really resonated with me, as well as the development of the younger one's character over time. I agree it has its problems, especially its treatment of women. The tragic moment was also dragged out a bit too much for my liking.
  2. Movie/TV recommendations

I really liked Hardy. His stilted speech suggested to me that Max has been solo-roaming the wastelands for so long that he's almost forgotten how to talk. I think his recall of his name at the end is as much for himself as it is for Furiosa. His physical performance had some lovely moments too, I thought, for example the frenetic filing at his garden fork mask and the stoic washing off of blood. It's not really a film about him and his amount of screen presence/demands on attention via acting felt just right to me.
  3. I Had A Random Thought...

I've noticed my wife and I drifting to opposite extremes on a lot of things, with the sort of hope that as we compromise we'll end up with some sort of healthy middle. Like, I tend to assume the best about the state of things at all times (partially in the vague conviction that if I don't worry about it, it won't happen) whereas she's more and more concerned with everything that might go wrong. It makes for tense arguments. It makes sense that adding something that undertaking a project together that a) you have no clue a priori exactly how to handle and b. is more important to you both than pretty much anything else is going to lead to a bunch of diagreements but yeah, it's not mentioned a whole lot. Of course being tired from caring for children gives everyone a short leash... Anyway, it's nice to complain but we've got it good I think
  4. I Had A Random Thought...

From my experience 2 children is at least 4 times as tiring. They can be (and usually will be) annoying/tiring in shifts, so there's much less downtime. I also will never get over the fact of just how different child number two is. Like, I have brothers, we're way different, I should have seen this coming. But from your own kids it's really surprising somehow. At least it was for me.

I really loved taking a day trip to the Toronto ISlands. Besides that the big tower (I forget the name) was fun to take the view from.
  6. Feminism

Super powerful stuff. Rare to see something like that out of Ted.
  7. I Had A Random Thought...

Right. And they're definitely equivalent answers in the sense that it's generally bad form to give people shit about their explanations. (Within reason though; for example my wife refuses to eat tomato skin because her grandmother told her once that it 'sticks to her insides'. But even there I've stopped making fun of it. Personal growth can be so boring.)
  8. I Had A Random Thought...

I would say that something being an 'ism' actually should make it more prone to criticism since it implies a conscious decision based on assumptions one could argue/disagree with. It's the equivalence I object to.
  9. Eggcorns

    The Deus Ex of puns.
  10. I Had A Random Thought...

I agree that giving people shit about what they choose to eat is irritating, and am sorry that you've had to deal with that. That doesn't make me feel better about lumping vegetarianism (a moral stance even if it happens to intersect with one's preference) in with pure preferences.

Just saw it last night. Still reeling. So good.
  12. I Had A Random Thought...

Yeah this is what we do. Mixed results. Tantruming kids are calmly (well, as calmly as possible) removed from the room and asked to come back when they've calmed down. @Mangela thanks for those stories, very irritating so well-presented @Gormongous I have a problem with lumping vegetarianism in with 'dislikes'
  13. Twitter :)

Just clarifyin'. It's easy (for me anyway) to get the opposite from your post.

There's a difference between wanting to know and bothering the blocker to find out why however.
  15. Eggcorns

    Aha.
  16. I Had A Random Thought...

Cooking for children is a heck of a challenge especially if you're concerned about nutrition & don't want every dinnertime to be a conflict zone. I don't cook separately for my chilluns but I also find it hard to condemn those who do because I can definitely empathise with the desire for peace. Watching the kids eat only starch (ie.pasta, taters) for dinner because they didn't happen to like the sauce/accompaniment is not an easy thing. We've managed to get the 'try everything once' mentality in there, but that's not even remotely the end of the story. The way I understand it is that from ages 2 to 10 kids are just plain only interested in high-'value' foods ie. fat, sugar, salt, because they're growing so much. Finding a way to get them to eat stuff besides those isn't exactly trivial, though we've been managing OK with a lot of experimentation (mexican tortillas so far are the biggest winner, but ofc. lead to some conflict because I make them put some veg on them as well). Anyway, as a parent I very strongly filter non-parent judgmental speech however, because it's one of those things you fundamentally don't understand the experience of until you're one. I remember what it was like not to have kids and retroactively cringe at a lot of my opinions/statements from that time.
  17. Mad Max

Just watched Mad Max 1 in preparation for tonight. Holy moly, that's depressing.

Both get dr. in front of the name. And, possibly due to english language pollution, I hear a lot more people talking about the dokter than the arts. 'Proper' isn't the only useful metric in language (un)fortunately.

Oh yeah, the final caveat should be to get the crap out of the academic postdoc treadmill ASAP. The PhD itself is a heck of a good time though.
  20. I Had A Random Thought...

Oh my god the sip from the blue fluid in that tampon ad. Amazing.

I'm sure it differs quite a bit per country and field, but I'd say you need to - be self-motivated/directed. Nobody's going to burn your ass to get to work until it's too late. I suck at this and ended up taking more than a year too long (also lost some time to traffic accident but still). - build a fallback plan into any experimental idea - realise that the first chapter of the thesis you plan in your first year will end up becoming the entire thesis. - be able to separate work/life. Too many people I saw doing a passion project PhD and burned themselves out. You'll do better science with a relaxed brain, I promise.
  22. Post your face!

The major difference there is one of thrust wakes vs. drag wakes, but yeah. From my simulations at least, even thrust wakes can apparently improve efficiency! Wish I'd had more time to figure that one out, but hey. Note all my stuff's in 2D though.

I like boobs. Mine's (theoretical) biology so I know what boobies and tits are (birds (puffin')) It's weird though because I work at a hospital at the moment so 'doctor' actually means something and it's confusing.

There's a whole bunch of goldurn aca-deemicals round these here parts.
  25. Episode 307: Roguelikes

I had to save up for new Megadrive games for at least half a year, purchasing a stinker was truly heartbreaking. I religiously cross-referenced all the review mags and still bought Cyborg Justice The C64 situation was even worse, ugh.
