I don't know what you are all talking about. Any time I create anything it's with an eye towards brainwashing people to think the same way I think about controversial political issues. I thought that's what art is supposed to be.

I think it blew up and then down and now it's time for the long haul (unless another gaming news site decides to link to it). I'm glad to be past the frenzy of these first few days. The site is down right now because my host is doing MySQL maintenance that is taking a long time and is scheduled at an annoying hour but once it comes back up I'll write a few reviews to parcel out over the next few days while I think about this thing. I want it to be kind of a legitimate review site but on the other hand I don't know if I have that kind of free time, plus I need to get large enough to feel good bugging companies about review codes for brand new games. Right now the review codes I have are from indie devs and from games that have been out a little while - I'm not sure what level of prestige I'd need to get, for instance, a copy of Unearthed: Trail of Ibn Battuta - Episode 1 - Gold Edition so I could review that and thus get something timely on the site (which would get more traffic and so on).

Excellent blastcast. The robot talk at the start was tremendous. I'm also excited to see the goty.cx picks.

I'm a little conflicted about bringing other people on board. I don't like the idea of people writing for game sites for free, but at this point I have no idea what the ad revenue is going to be so I can't even figure out how much I can pay people, let alone how much I should pay people. On the other hand, more reviews are always better and it would be great to, for instance, have a review up for a game like Bravely Default - a timely review is always better, especially for a site looking to establish itself, because you can get in on lists of reviews and stuff that people pass around (and potentially even show up when people Google for reviews).

His older brother died of a drug overdose and Mike himself has a chronic anxiety disorder which is why he takes Lexapro, and that's just the stuff he's talked about, so it's not like he's had a care-free life. It's also not like people drop out of school, attempt suicide, self-mutilate, and steal as children for no reason, either - bullying drives a lot of people to these sorts of things because it can be pretty horrible getting picked on, day in and day out, and going through that as a child is no joke. Anti-bullying campaigns and things like It Gets Better exist because life can be hell for a kid in all sorts of ways. I think it helps to have empathy for the struggles that everyone goes through rather than saying "well, some people have it worse." Because honestly we can always pull that trick on the people you're talking about, who have to face drug addiction, abortion, suicide, dropping out of school, and so on. At least they weren't born in Africa with AIDS and no access to clean water or sufficient food in a place where they don't get to go to school and can't even take the helpful, medicinal kinds of drugs, let alone recreational drugs. People in those circumstances deal with way worse shit than an angsty teenager who tries to OD on sleeping pills.

I'm honestly not sure. The main issue is that if I ever bring people on board I'll want them to follow my style guide, and my style guide is very explicit about what I'm doing, which means it would give up the secret. I'd have to somehow make a separate style guide for them. Really though I'm not sure I would ever bring anyone on board who didn't know what was going on. The cabal is objectively correct.

Cars have rear view mirrors for a reason! It looks like I might've made $10 yesterday off ads. That seems like a lot of money to make in a day for a website set up the previous evening. I'm not sure that sort of money is at all sustainable, though. I hope I can at least pay back the hosting costs. One thing I left out of the OP: the response from the public. I updated the FAQ to address complains about not explaining the source of the number. In other news, the Kotaku post about my site and my site are now the top two Google results for "objective game reviews."

I use tags for BOTH. You can just add a lot of tags.

If the worry is that people will take what my reviews say and believe them, then I'm not super worried. The reviews themselves are objective, except for the number at the end, and I don't see what makes me less qualified to slap a number on there than sites like Cheat Code Central and Hardcore Gamer Magazine which, by virtue of their being factored into Metacritic scores, have much more influence on things than I ever could. Hell, if Cheat Code Central had given Fallout: New Vegas a higher score, it would've gotten an 85 Metacritic average rather than an 84, and Obsidian would've received some much needed cash. In a world like this, where review scores by who gives a fuck can put people who work at one of my favorite dev studios out of a job, I'm not too concerned that someone will take the numbers I assign to games and treat them as if they're something more than they are. In other news Google Analytics lets you view how many people are on your site in real time. It's addictive as fuck. The peak was about a constant ~600 when Kotaku first mentioned me - now it's hovering at ~200.
