  1. Let's Draw Video Games

It's great that this is now the dedicated Spelunky art thread, or the art is great? Either way I agree.
  2. New people: Read this, say hi.

You should go back and start at the beginning, there's some really good stuff back there!
  3. When you click on a dude in Syndicate, what does the voice say? I always thought it says "selected" but this site says it's garble that sounds sort of like "JELAKIT." Now I don't know what to believe. edit: never mind I loaded the game up again to test my ears and fuck that website, it totally says "selected." Still interested in input from others though, just about the game in general. Did you ever play it? I really enjoyed it although honestly I wish the controls weren't such shit. I think one thing it does really well is immerse the player in the world: little details like how it's implied you're basically in a blimp literally controlling the agents from above made it feel more real, and the hilarious disregard for civilians feels a lot more natural for the game and its theme than the cavalier attitude taken towards causalities and death in lots of other games.
  4. Crucial URGENT Video Game Question Answer Needed NOW

I think it was kind of a fine Syndicate game too. I mean, the genre was different, and the story was dumb, but everything else was more or less spot on.
  5. It's beginning to look a lot like...

You might want to get that looked at.
  6. ObjectiveGameReviews.com - A Subtle Journey of Discovery

T-T-T-TRIPLE POST!!! Thanks entirely to the efforts of the PR firm in Canada that I have recently engaged to promote the website, it was mentioned in Rock Paper Shotgun's Sunday Papers which is great. Early feedback is encouraging:
  7. ObjectiveGameReviews.com - A Subtle Journey of Discovery

I couldn't remember where I had read stuff about games journalism for free, so I tweeted on twitter and Noyb responded with some links that led me to what I was thinking of: http://botherer.org/2012/01/11/12-tips-for-the-young-games-journalist/ http://botherer.org/2012/01/12/to-clarify-on-working-for-free/ These are the biggest reason why I haven't brought anyone else on board yet, although reading them again I notice that Walker is saying "don't work for free for professional sites," and he defines professional sites as profitable sites, and this thing isn't profitable yet and likely won't be for a long long time, or until approximately five Kotaku sized sites link to it, so now I am considering bringing other people on. I'm still worried about making words worth nothing and so on but I'm definitely coming around, I think.
  8. ObjectiveGameReviews.com - A Subtle Journey of Discovery

Oh, I forgot to mention the most important part of this entire saga. I registered objectivegamereviews.com at hover.com/wizard.
  9. I'm Going to Make a Game

Trouble in Terrorist Town is just that, constantly.
  10. ObjectiveGameReviews.com - A Subtle Journey of Discovery

Aww, thank you! Between that and Metafilter it's like having a PR firm working for me. A Canadian one.
  11. Idle Thumbs 139: Happy News Year

Oh wow, this is really cool. When I heard "Storify" and "tweets" I was picturing some clunky amalgamation of tweets. I didn't realize it let you add a bunch of text to explain things. Thanks for the link! "watched me eat a poisoned banana probably" is kind of poignant.
  12. Plug your shit

Plenty of first person games have inventories. Deus Ex, Thief, Skyrim, Far Cry 3, Dishonored, E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy, and Dark Forces all have inventories, for instance.
  13. Guacamelee

Rick Deckard spent most of Blade Runner in a hovercar, hovering over parts of LA. So there's that.
  14. Idle Thumbs 139: Happy News Year

Melissa hefted her rifle and aimed down the sights to check that the holographic crosshair was still working. Charlie watched her.“I don’t get it,” he said. “Aren’t we safe here?” Melissa shrugged. Rick looked over at Charlie. “You don’t get it, kid.” “What’s to get?” replied Charlie. “We have the EMP mines set up at the entrances and the thermal shield has been holding steady at 98% for three days. What is there to worry about?” “These aren’t your average better humans, kid,” said Rick. “These aren’t just a pack of big dogs and pet men. When they come for you, they’re not coming with titanium mandibles. These are extruder equipped Geoweaver Hexapods.” “A Geoweaver Hexapod? Is that anything like a quadrocopter?” asked Charlie. Melissa laughed, then shook her head. Charlie turned towards her, a questioning look on his face. Rick spoke up again. “Quadrocopters haven’t been equipped with extruders since the tottering teens. A Geoweaver Hexapod was built to take information from GPS satellites and pinpoint your location across large landscapes on the ground before it’s halfway done with your house. Do you know what one of those can do to a man?” Charlie shifted uncomfortably on the shelf he was sitting on. He turned his gaze back to the LCD screen that contained the readout summarizing the shelter’s defenses, poking desultorily at menu options to monitor the harmonics of the thermal shield. Inwardly, he resolved that no matter how many Geoweaver Hexapods they had to face that day, he was going to make it to the year of the PS4. Only then would he allow himself to weep for what humanity had lost.
  15. I Had A Random Thought...

I think I've eaten at a Fatburger once in my life and a Five Guy's never, or once. I have no recollection of the experience (or experiences, as it may be).
  16. ObjectiveGameReviews.com - A Subtle Journey of Discovery

Fuuuuuuuucking twitter. First notch says he loves it so much and then Graham Smith asks the public for Sunday Paper suggestions and I'm sitting here with twitter's thumb up my ass. It's really giving me an appreciation for the power of social media though. I feel like the next time I launch a website I'm going to have a list of 20 things I'd do differently that would be a big help. Somewhere on that list is "have a twitter account first so you don't get caught by autospam algorithms."
  17. ObjectiveGameReviews.com - A Subtle Journey of Discovery

I'll claim to be the one behind it.
  18. ObjectiveGameReviews.com - A Subtle Journey of Discovery

I was tweeting a lot with a brand new account. twitter's automatic algorithms tagged the account as one to suspend because they thought I was a potential spammer. Now I get to wait a looooooooooooooooooooooooooong time for some twitter employee to mosey over to take a look and unsuspend me.
  19. Blue's News, RPS, and twitter are where I get all my gaming news.
  20. ObjectiveGameReviews.com - A Subtle Journey of Discovery

Twitter suspended the @ObjGameReviews account which is the most irritating thing in the entire fucking world right now. Anyways, fun things: At 10:29 AM Chris Thursten calls the site "beautifully crafted satire." Then at 10:30 AM he says "at least I think it's satire." By 10:33 he's sure it's satire and he's in a discussion with someone as to whether Tom Francis is behind it. Good arc!
  21. ObjectiveGameReviews.com - A Subtle Journey of Discovery

    Some people get so close...
  22. ObjectiveGameReviews.com - A Subtle Journey of Discovery

It's going to take something Kotaku-level to worry the site at this point, and even then I might be fine now that I've ugpraded the hosting and made the back end stuff much more efficient. Metafilter is hardly making a dent. Thanks for posting it there, though! I always like satire when it's real enough to fool people, so I'm glad my site's inspiring stuff like this! Also, plot twist: he likes Far Cry 2 a lot. I appreciate it but mostly my objection to the whole "no pay" thing is that it devalues games criticism and sets up a system where people eager to write reviews and get exposure are exploited by seedier sites that exist just to suck reviews out of enthusiastic people and to sell ads. When the price of games criticism for some bozo's review site (like mine) drops to "I don't need any money, it's just for fun!" you get some yucky stuff going on that I'm not sure I want to help sustain.

    I think Unreal?
