  1. I really wish this game had a demo. Like an idiot I didn't play the open beta and now that everyone's talking about how awesome it is I feel like I'm missing out, but I don't want to drop a phat load of cash just to end up with a game I'm not a huge fan of. Blizzard seems like they eventually get around to making demos of all their games, or at least most of them, but I wish they'd hurry up and do it right now!
  2. New Forums! Post feedback, notes, etc here

Maybe make it so that posts here subtract from your post count so that people can keep their count in equilibrium should they so choose.
  3. What software do you use to make a trailer?

Is your question about how to record gameplay from your computer that isn't blurry, how to edit it into a trailer, or both?
  4. Enemy Starfighter: Freespace + Flotilla (or: X-Wing + Homeworld)

This is now called House of the Dying Sun and it'll be on Steam early access in June 2016. Here is a trailer:
  5. I Had A Random Thought...

This is going to be really tough without knowing anything about the story except that it's from 1951.
  6. The Idle Book Club 16: Mr. Fox

I am a couple hundred pages into this book and it is awesome. That is all.
  7. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

A while ago Mangela Lansbury posted ANOHNI's song "4 Degrees" in this thread. Her full album, HOPELESSNESS, just came out, and it's pretty great. I think 4 Degrees is my favorite track but pretty much everything is great. Here's one of the other songs:
  8. The Big FPS Playthrough MISSION COMPLETE

You can destroy the cameras. But, too late I guess.
  9. Movie/TV recommendations

Mostly it just pisses me off because now instead of being able to watch them all via Hulu+, which I get free from using Bing as my search engine, I'll have to buy the new service to watch Criterion movies.
  10. The Big FPS Playthrough MISSION COMPLETE

FWIW I think opinions are split more or less evenly over whether Thief or Thief 2 is the better game. If anything I think the numbers lean slightly in the direction of liking Thief more. I'm certainly in that camp - Thief 2 has a lot of impressive stuff but overall I'm a Thief man, for various reasons.
  11. The Big FPS Playthrough MISSION COMPLETE

Make sure you go with TFix. My suggestion with Thief is also not to use quickload unless you die - it's a lot more exciting that way.
  12. I fucking hate Snapchat. I can't even figure out what the goddamn buttons do. There are ghosts everywhere somehow and some buttons are purple and others are red and what the fuck. And I don't even grasp the basic idea. Why do I want to send a Mission: Impossible this message will self-destruct? How is that convenient? When someone sends me something what if I want to keep looking at it?

  14. TITANFLAPS 2

I haven't played super recently, but they did release all the paid maps for free, so the player base is no longer splintered.
  15. TITANFLAPS 2

I guess I don't mind "winning" the game if I'm playing as the good guys, either. I'm happy with pretty much any outcome, really. I'm not a picky dude. Like I said, I'm pretty laid back.
  16. TITANFLAPS 2

I don't really mind "losing" the game if I'm playing as the bad guys. I don't need to "win" every "single player" game I play. As a card carrying Idle Thumb I appreciate games like Far Cry 2 that aren't just power fantasies that suck your hero dick. I could understand feeling a disconnect between playing well in a match and then being told that you've "lost," which isn't something Far Cry 2 quite does, but I don't really mind that (I guess I'm laid back!) so I had no problem with the Titanfall campaign. Then again, I wouldn't mind if they "fixed" this in Titanfall 2.
  17. It has to be intentional in some sense, because it only happens for certain characters in certain parts of the book. I've read other Dick before and he doesn't write like that anywhere else that I've read, either. Maybe it's even supposed to suggest they're speaking Japanese to each other.
  18. Just finished this. I've read some Dick before but not this book. I'm super impressed - this is a pretty great book. Thoughts (citations to the pagination in the 1962 version by G.P. Putnam's Sons):
  19. TITANFLAPS 2

I also quite liked Titanfall. The Call of Duty sort of model of multiplayer FPS is super popular for a good reason - it's a really compelling feel, when it comes to the guns, and Titanfall's innovations all worked great: the movement, the Titans, the AI NPCs. The movement added a little dose of Tribes into the game, which is great because every game needs more Tribes, and more generally it really amped up the verticality and made much more of the map a live option in terms of traversal, which cuts down quite a bit on what otherwise sometimes feels like monotony in other FPS games when you're running around a map for the 890th time. The Titans escalate the game over time in a pretty interesting way, they work well whether you're in them or using them as massive robotic attack dogs, they give you a way of making progress even without directly fighting (by killing NPCs so you can get a Titan) and they have some pretty cool guns and abilities. The NPCs were the things I was most dubious about before the game came out - I didn't want a bunch of bullshit crowding my pristine killing fields - but they add some strategic depth, especially to the game modes where you can contribute towards victory by killing them, and they mostly just make the battle feel more impressive. I don't know how excited I am about Titanfall 2 - I don't really need more Titanfalls if they're like more Call of Duties, which is to say basically the same game all over again. But if they mix things up again (which clearly they were willing to do with the first game) while also keeping the core of the game (which they managed to keep perfectly, because they're masters of the craft) I'll be happy. I wonder if they'll use Source (or, Source 2 I guess) again this time. The engine was almost unrecognizable in Titanfall which I found pretty enjoyable, because I like to feel like I can sort of tell what engine I'm in just by the way the game looks and feels, but Titanfall threw me for a bit of a loop.
  20. Is there an objective list of major failings somewhere? Why can't "not enough orcs" or "too many orcs" or "racist as all hell" be a major failing? Who decides what is a major failing? How about minor failings - who decides whether a failing is large enough to take off 1 point or 2 points? Is there an objective scale somewhere?
  21. The Division was clearly trying to be a game about orcs, but it fails miserably at it. 3/10.
  22. As someone who doesn't have the game and who probably never will because I'm past the time in my life where I can grind in a video game without grinding my teeth in real life, could you say more about this? I'm always interested in the stories of huge fuckoff AAA games, especially when they're downright evil like it sounds like The Division might be.
  23. Read the book (the whole book!) yesterday. Really not a huge fan. My thoughts: So yes, not a fan of the book.
  24. I think one difference is that TV is fucking long - if I have to sit through a couple episodes of a show before it gets good, that's already an entire album's worth of time, or more. Even worse, I can't do anything else while I'm watching TV. I have to give it my full attention. Meanwhile, I can write, cook, clean, etc. while listening to music. So if someone says "you really ought to listen to album X" or whatever I can do that in the time it would take me to watch a tiny slice of a TV series. I don't even have enough free time in my life to watch good TV, so there's no way I'm wasting any of it on shitty TV just to wait until it gets good, but for music it's not really much of a time investment.
