  1. Feminism

Wow this is some neanderthal shit. Nice reality check for why the term gamer still carries a social stigma when you have ethical geniuses like this running a hate campaign for the sake of gamz journalism intergrity.
  2. At the Gates

Don't know if anyone else here backed the kickstarter at a level where they have access to early builds of the game, but if you did I would recommend checking it out now. The game clearly still has a long way to go, but the early game is pretty fun to play at the moment, and there have been a lot of really cool revisions going on that I'm into.
  3. DOTA 2

According to purge's guide Int does increase your damage by +1 for Int heroes, although what kind of damage it is is ambiguous. I would assume that refers to your right click attack as opposed to your abilities, but honestly I have no idea. I'd be interested to hear from someone with greater knowledge of the game.
  4. Episode 271: The Last Express

The Grand Budapest Hotel very self-consciously aped a lot of conventions, techniques, and structures of 19th century European novels. Although it was definitely evoking a similar era, and therefore bears some similar thematic traits, I don't get the impression that the effort was allegorical.
  5. Finally we can uncover the secret of the treasure goblin, which possibly includes the dance http://www.pcgamer.com/2014/08/14/diablo-3-patch-2-1-0-opens-a-portal-to-the-realm-of-the-treasure-goblins/
  6. Welcome! That wikitionary article points out that the term is archaic, meaning it sounds very dated to English speakers. I can definitely imagine an outraged English speaker in the 19th century describing himself or herself as "hot-livered".
  7. I'm glad you mentioned this because most of the criticism I have heard about the Gods Will Be Watching is similar to this criticism people had for L.A. Noire, and I think that dovetails into why the game gets criticized for its difficulty -- not because the difficulty isn't thematically appropriate, but more because for some people it's not intuitive at all trying to determine how characters are reacting, and what sort of impact your actions will have in the underlying systems. Thorny design problem there.
  8. I don't agree with Gormongous' premise that when people are policing language, they must be doing so out of fear of language becoming degraded. Language will endure just fine, sure, but our use of language has political and social implications. I don't think people were wrong to criticize the Bush administration for using the term "enhanced interrogation techniques" to describe torture. Part of feminism's success is getting a broader range of people to consider potentially sexist language. To say that any evolution in language is inevitable, and therefore we have no right to do anything about it strikes me as incredibly defeatist and incorrect. That language naturally transforms over time means we have a greater responsibility to consider how we use language, and to debate its usage.
  9. Half-Life 3

    Sum guy was right!
  10. Almost all of the commentators I've listened to are native English speakers with the exception of the occasional eastern European commentator so my comment was definitely not meant as a criticism of people whose primary language is Romantic, or other languages that typically feature vowel sounds at the end of words.
  11. I also wince when I hear "ulti"!
  12. There's a slight risk of a straw man being setup here. No one is claiming that all use of jargon is bad. However people should be mindful about the use of jargon, and what it is in service of. I studied a fair amount of philosophy and literary theory in college. While some jargon is necessary just like in any other academic field, I also saw papers, talks, and class discussions where an excess of jargon noticeably degraded the quality of discourse.
  13. Episode 271: The Last Express

I really appreciated all the discussion about the effects used by this game to produce distance between the character and the player, and that is certainly one of the many distinguishing characteristics about the game. It is such a rare quality to see in a game since most developers seem obsessed with chasing player immersion that it is easy to lose sight of the value of other goals. I suppose it is a feature of strategy games (who/what is the player exactly?) but not something you see in most narrative driven games.
  14. I think jargon is inevitable, but also a bad habit that should be avoided. One of the things I dislike the most about getting into DOTA 2 is all the jargon you have to end up using because pushing back against it is just a fight you're never going to win.
  15. Robert Heinlein invented the word! I think it's great, albeit unnecessary. Edit: missed Jake's post where this was discussed!
  16. The Great Twitch Purge of Three Weeks From Now

It will be a sad day if we lose the Far Cry 2 stream. Not that the chat is archived, but it was amazing seeing so many people who were like, "oh, this is why you guys love Far Cry 2!" because they saw how rad the game is once you start really fucking with its systems.
  17. Rektreactional

I watched the Potato Day, and Venomancer? I Hardly Knew Her matches. Looking forward to more of this. Does anyone know if they have announced the dates for round 2?
  18. DOTA 2

I used to think that these kinds of splits would badly divide the community base, and that could potentially be a problem for a multiplayer game. However it seems like with each iteration of Counterstrike that game just gets even more popular. I think because the PC gaming market is growing at the moment the risks from these divisions is lessened, especially for a free game. And of course I am very excited at the prospect of new mods. WC3 was host to all sorts of great mods with unique gameplay, so clearly there's a pretty strong base with these basic game mechanics for lots of different types of games.
  19. Oh yes, yes, also, I REALLY want that Idle Thumbs DOTA announcing to happen. Those teams should play against each other, even if it's not part of the Rektreational.
  20. Good podding. I also share Jake's love of Steam streaming. It's what makes my current awesome PC setup possible. I live in a cramped 1 bedroom apartment with my wife. The desk area we have in our bedroom really doesn't have room for a desktop so I actually have the desktop in the living room connected to the TV. This actually isn't that crazy a setup because we have a coffee table that folds out to an elevated position that makes it possible to setup a mouse and keyboard, and I can use that from the couch pretty comfortably. But it also gives me the option to stream to my old laptop in the bedroom seamlessly, and I love how great it works. I played most of Wolfenstein that way, and it worked fine. The discussion of Crypt of the Necrodancer I think dissuaded me from picking it up. I like Spelunky for a lot of the same reasons Chris does, and it is the only rougelike-like game that I can think of that has the same density of interactions as a game like NetHack, and I think most of these types of games just ultimately aren't going to hold my interest without that. It did make me think of that game 140 though. I don't know if any of the Thumbs have played it, but I suspect both Jake and Chris would enjoy it. I believe it was a sort of side project from one of the developers of Limbo. Anyway, it's a platformer game with a minimalist style of simple geometry, but what makes the presentation amazing is that the music changes depending on your location in the level. So the rhythm of the music basically acts as an aid to assist the player with all the tricky platforming bits. It's short, cool, and worth checking out.
  21. I don't doubt it. My reason for holding off from Early Access games just comes down to the fact that I never seem to have any shortage of stuff I want to play so I figure I can wait on stuff that isn't complete yet, even if it's awesome already.
  22. iOS Gaming

Thanks to the enthusiastic impressions from Thumbs posters I ended up downloading this game last night, and it is indeed great. The whole aesthetic presentation is knocked out of the park, but I want to give a shout out to the score of the game which perfectly captures the spirit of adventure. I find the idea of someone rage quitting the game hilarious, but the only other games I've really been playing lately have been DOTA & Dark Souls 2 so this game is comparatively definitely sedate and relaxing.
  23. DOTA 2

Really have my fingers crossed for a special DOTA Today episode recorded at Dear Mom as Brad & Sean drunkenly celebrate their victory.
  24. Looks great. I haven't watched much of the streaming since that goes on at like 3 am in my time zone, and I don't ever really feel like watching it after the fact, but I think what they're doing is amazing. I haven't picked it up though as I've almost entirely sworn off early access games at this point.
