I will say that the horror in this game is different from other horror games that I have experienced. It's like this sense of dread that builds up in the environment rather than set piece jump scares, horrifying imagery, and the like. I don't know whether that would make it more or less appealing to you.

Idle Thumbs 179: Shadow of Something

I don't agree with the idea that a horror game will lose its power just because of its length. I'm sure playing System Shock 2 took me over 20 hours to complete the first time I played it, and I don't feel like that game ever stopped feeling tense and scary. -
Ha weird, I just replayed this recently as well. I think what happened is I bought the Glados announcer pack in DOTA, and my wife kept hearing it, and that made her want to replay the game.

Also, speaking of quick Alien Isolation edits, with some simple changes it has Oculus Rift support: http://www.pcgamer.com/alien-isolation-can-support-oculus-rift-with-a-few-ini-edits/ -

I remember one of my favorite things from Worms 2/Worms Armageddon was creating your own sound banks. For a 14 yr. old kid that was basically the greatest feature in a computer game ever, -

Thank you Nels! That's been my only complaint about the game so far, and I'm glad it was brought up on the cast. It hasn't felt like a slog at all, and I'm not too worried about the game overstaying its welcome since I only play in like hour long chunks at a time, but that incongruous AMD video was driving me nuts. I do wish there had been more discussion about the systems in the game, since I think they are really interesting, rather than a lot of talk about how some reviews said the game was too long. I love that I picked up a revolver two hours into the game, and three hours later I still haven't fired a shot. Also how passing by smoke from a fire causes you to cough. Or how I want to keep tabs on any humans are on the map in case the alien happens to be nearby I can increase my chances of someone else getting eaten instead of me (which is how I've survived all my encounters so far). -
French people cringe at everything that is not a Parisian accent.

That seems totally wrongheaded. You need a PC to really see how amazing Bioshock Infinite looks!

Meanwhile, here's another ex-Irrational Games kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/molassesflood/the-flame-in-the-flood Unsurprisingly, this looks gorgeous.

Maybe this assumption is wrong, but I typically feel like a kickstarter needs to hit like 1/3rd of its goal within the first day or two, or it very likely won't reach the finishing line.

I feel dirty for having clicked on that Skeptic Ink link.

I played it for 3 hours last night, and was super impressed. When you walk pass smoke from a fire you cough (which is the sort of thing that would presumably give away your position). There are so many wonderful environmental details.

It looks great to me, but yeah, I don't see them hitting a $500k goal for a wonderfully weird game rather than some nostalgia project.

I would say right-wing reactionary movements all share a call to restore order to some idealized version of the past. You could see a variation of that theme in Nazi rhetoric, as well as the Tea Party movement in American politics today, or the John Birch society back in the 60s.

So in Intel's non-apology they said " Intel does not support any organization or movement that discriminates against women." ... except for the part where they are pulling an ad because the content of an editorial by a woman was found objectionable by some.

Yay! I want to play this game, even if it's just a retread of the mechanics of RE4.

Yeah, I would say you could use a different analogy, like, saying homelessness is a widespread problem, but it does seem pointless when most evidence points to you are just arguing with trolls.

Honestly the super mixed reviews make me just want to check it out for myself.

You see a lot of arguments for consumer protection here in the U.S. as well. Often that results in occupational licensing requirements. Sometimes that's sensible, I think everyone besides the most staunch libertarian likes the fact that doctors need licenses to practice, but sometimes it is more dubious like for hair stylists, and just create more hoops for people to jump through to get jobs. I think the basic question that needs to address is what is the specific harm that is created without the specific consumer protection in place? A lot of times, there is no difference, and that is certainly applicable here. I'd say video games fall closer to the hair stylists (where a consumer may be dissatisfied with a hair cut or video game) than doctors (who engage in operations that can be a matter of life or death).

Oh man, that Total Biscuit pretzel logic... Without getting too deep into it, because if you think about what TB is saying too hard your brain will turn into mush, a couple of points about this conversation leap out to me: 1. TB keeps using this rhetoric about the importance of protecting consumers, like they are some vulnerable group that is getting preyed upon by the world at large (or something, it is not exactly clear). That is a weird assumption to make. 2. TB was about to write some statement complaining about the New York Times piece for what he incorrectly saw as some factual misrepresentation without himself bothering to investigate and confirm what Leigh's actual work relationship with Gamasutra is. The irony of this fact is apparently lost on him. 3. He then says the problem with Leigh's views is that it will have broader ramifications. Again, irony apparently lost. 4. He employs that weird logic where because other people suffer forms of harassment, he thinks misogyny isn't a problem. As it happens, I came across this old reddit thread about how the DOTA community is a problem for women, and I think it perfectly captures how sexism and misogyny are in fact specific problems for women beyond simple harassment in general (which also happens, and is also a problem!) http://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/20ghsa/when_you_wonder_why_there_arent_more_girls/ 5. Chris is really awesome, and I hope his engagement resulted in one less rant from TB that would result in his fanbase descending on women guilty of the crime of disagreeing with TB.

I bought Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective earlier this year back when it was not out of print, and it was available for the more typical price of $50. Still not cheap, but also not eye popping expensive.

I also have a hard time playing anything other than MvM in TF2... it's just too much fun.

I like the changes to the towers, taking one down now seems properly monumental. Flipside to that I guess is heroes with illusions feel a little OP to me. Last night I played a couple of games as Chaos Knight, and worked diligently to get a manta style ASAP, and that just made me and my team pretty unstoppable.

Even apartments in the Richmond is so fucking expensive now... I don't think I will ever get to move from my rent controlled 1 bedroom apartment in the Mission (and at this point I hate living in the Mission) without leaving San Francisco. :-(

Oh man, Sean got really into CS: GO. RIP DOTA Today podcast... When I saw CS was one of the games mentioned I assumed it was because they decided to play on the Gone Home map, but I guess not? I would love to see a Thumbs stream of that. I had to delete Desert Golf from my phone after a week just because I was compulsively playing it anytime I had a spare moment, and the game just doesn't elicit any good emotional response out of me. I would just feel low levels of annoyance, impatience, or boredom. So after a week I noticed I had been in a bad mood for awhile, and I realized it was because of this game so I had to get rid of it.
