I have worn mine to work/school, around the significant other, and most hilariously, to a Steam Dev Day event. It's a shirt that keeps on giving! Everyone should have one.

Redemption arcs too often distill actions and reactions to this 1:1 relationship that I don't find particularly engaging. The fact that it's usually a man seeking redemption for some action they committed against a woman (usually a wife or a daughter), makes this story trope less and less interesting to me. Looking for redemption is such a selfish pursuit and I wish more narratives were willing to cop to that complicated motivation, instead of indiscriminately rewarding the protagonist (example: the ending of Breaking Bad). Lee's story never read as him needing to seek redemption, which ultimately made his relationship with Clementine feel more poignant and heartbreaking.

Man, I completely forgot that Luke's clone is named Luuke in that book.

I don't usually go in for advice columns, but this one seemed sort of relevant to the past few pages I conversation. http://www.theawl.com/2014/07/ask-polly-i-want-to-get-laid-but-im-afraid-of-oppressing-women#more-198276

Haha don't worry about. It's a charming kind of creepy. (Note: not actually creepy) -

Seems fine. -
Doesn't Patrick Klepek catch a lot of vitriol for writing about similar issues? I'm not sure changing the name from Mary to Martin will do much, because the people who are already inclined to lash out against these issues will do so regardless of the byline.

I say this occasionally but it's always worth repeating: I'm so happy that I've never experienced anything like what is mentioned in the article from the Idle Thumbs community. It's comforting to know that mostly male game-related spaces exist where women won't immediately get shit all over for commiting the terrible sin of being female in public.

I'd say that mansplaining is less an issue of blatant sexism (men acting this way because they believe women are inferior) and more a product of society conferring so much more weight to a man's opinion. That would explain why it's usually men who engage in this kind of behavior and why men AND women can be at the receiving end of it. I'm fully willing to concede that the word 'mansplain' may be applied to broadly to have any real meaning for some people, but as a woman I personally feel that my reaction when men explain things to me is different than it would be if I were a man. I find that I am much more sensitive to it, which is why that word still means something to me.

Coincidently, I'm listening to the episode that my former partner used to introduce me to the podcast. https://www.idlethumbs.net/idlethumbs/episodes/episode-forty-five Major selling point was the first 10 minutes or so about Mass Effect 2 and Subject Zero.

Idle Thumbs 167: And That's Why Skeletons Fart That Way

It's criminal that no one connected the farting skeleton to this https://twitter.com/chrisremo/status/487725021050056705 -
I strongly disagree with that. If an author (fiction or non) has a specific intention that does not come across, it's her failure, just like it would be failure for not understanding what that intention was. Both parties are culpable, sometimes equally and sometimes not. I'm willing to believe that MT had the best intentions. He failed in some ways and many people have written smart pieces on those failures. Drilling further down into this doesn't benefit anyone.

If have a hard time believing that anyone would respond perfectly to a public rape allegation. There's just no way.

Looking back on some of my college relationships, there were definitely instances of questionable consent that left me feeling very uncomfortable. I'm sure that if I talked to any of the men involved, their perception would be completely different from mine and I wouldn't be surprised if they never even noticed a problem. I can't really fault them for that though, because as that Medium article points out, young people are never really properly taught what consent or a healthy sexual relationship means, which is one of the reasons why we continue to have these kinds of problems. I'm glad that more people are talking about the nuances in this CAH situation because when I initially heard about this story, the reaction I commonly saw was "Why is the Internet protecting a known rapist?!" which is a few million degrees higher than where the conversation has currently landed. Labeling someone as a rapist is about as useful as calling someone a racist: you feel momentarily satisfied but you've also put that person on the defensive and almost guaranteed that they won't listen to anything else you have to say. I'm not excusing anyone's actions and I'm not saying that shitty behavior shouldn't be called out. There are just more constructive ways to talk about complex issues that might actually produce a good outcome, instead of entrenching both sides further into their own, limited viewpoints.

Six Pants None the Richard is a much better name for that band.

I don't really understand the distinction you're trying to make here.

Except for 50 Shades of Grey. Or the fact that YA author LJ Smith was fired from writing her own successful series and replaced by a fan fiction author. Or that a lot of the currently popular YA series have come out of fan fiction writing.

Making him better written than most fan fiction characters.

Idle Thumbs 166: Cyberpunk Cop-Killer
Argobot replied to Chris's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I have always loved that scene as well. I've had this song and Spanish Ladies stuck in my head since watching this movie again last week. Not to rub salt in the wound, but there was something pretty wonderful about seeing a movie like this in the theater. The whole audience was so into the movie and it made all the jokes seem funnier and that scene with Ben Gardner's boat scarier than I remember it being. I actually kind of wish that this was my first time seeing the film, that's how fun the whole experience was. Also, some people might get a kick out of this: http://www.npr.org/2014/07/08/329731479/richard-dreyfus-children-jaws-makes-no-sense -

It's always struck me as wanting the praise for having a gay character without doing any of the work. (In reference to Dumbledore) -
I have no doubt that something like this study is trying to prove exists, but I really question their data. They only used 32 couples, most from the University of VA who were an average 19 years-old. The end of the report admits that a flaw in their research was not studying older men, possibly to see how maturity effects this situation. That said, I'd fully believe that men act this way with female partners. I'm just not positive this study provides enough good proof.
