weird parallels continue cropping up tegan my family built the house I grew up in, during construction me and sister saw some unused space behind our upstairs hallway closet and built a secret closet-sized room you could only access through a tiny child-sized hole in the first closet. This metaphor proved foreshadowy.
  2. I Had A Random Thought...

Sure, but I'd guess that's more their language wouldn't have a word for it because their culture doesn't experience or focus on it, so it's more because they grew up in that culture than because they spoke that language. I've found especially since I started multitasking aurally (listening to a podcast and music while playing games) my thoughts have retreated from language, since it really does take an additional step of focus to add words to it.

There are tons of different types of antidepressants as far as I know and some of them just won't work for you, if it's actually doing nothing good for you it's maybe time to try a different one. There's nothing wrong with you, it's normal for clinically depressed people to have certain medicines that don't work for them. It could be good for you to see a psychiatrist about your depression, but you should tell her to pick a good one
  4. I Had A Random Thought...

I guess I still think in a childish way then, because I frequently don't codify my idle thought in language until I'm nearing the end of finding my opinion. The way I see it languages are all just verbalizing concepts that already existed in your mind. Layering on the words to your thoughts is the final step to conversing, but you don't need to do that when you're just thinking inside your head.
  5. I Had A Random Thought...

Something random happened: I was just now going to the bathroom before biking home from college, and just as I flushed I could hear two guys in a nearby stall making out. On that note good night Idle Thumbs, I'll see you next time I get to a free wifi spot (no home internet! lame)
  6. I Had A Random Thought...

Right there with you guys, I'm not a vegetarian but I don't like steak, bacon, or jerky. Next to my seat here at my college is a giant window, and sunlight was blasting through it for a couple hours straight. I had to play SC2 crouched into a weird ball in my comfy chair, continually shoving further into the chairseat as the sunlight encroached, threatening to white out my screen.

At this time it's not very feasible anyway because it's such a laden political choice for schools, but to be completely frank I don't think we need a dedicated religions class. Cultures are heavily affected by religions especially the further back you go, but people would be learning about those cultures already in their respective classes (for example taking a spanish or mandarin class will include some of the culture as well), and the general education provided by history courses cover what's relevant. There are theology courses available in colleges but I don't really know what that entails, if they're focusing on a single religion or not. The reality is there are too many religions to go into depth in a general studies course, and for what you're trying to achieve I think a debate course would be more effective. If students better learn to think critically that can be applied to a variety of subjects, this one included. On an unrelated note I learned how to frown a couple days ago. Haven't found occaision to whip it out yet but now I can if need be, though I'd need to practice more to make it not look like a comedic parody of a frown.
  8. It's interesting hearing the beginning of the podcast where they bear down on that particular AFK tactic. It seems to me completely the fault of the players in the game, that they didn't respect the military strength of this tiny country that was supposedly neutral. Not saying it's an honorable move to make, but from my point of view it's entirely using the resources available to the game so it's not cheating or even against the spirit. The whole point was that they wanted to take down Wolfcop because of Wolfcop's position in the game not because of who he was, but they thought Wolfcop was Pierre, and upon Pierre finding out that they thought he was Wolfcop and they wanted to kill Wolfcop, he took that personally, and also the real person who was Wolfcop took the attack personally as well.
  9. New people: Read this, say hi.

    Indeed, video space games.
  10. Episode 214: We <3 the Swarm

Actually the tournament I was remembering was an MLG or IPL 2s tournament years ago, and I remember a few smaller ones maybe hosted by Playhem? They always had way smaller numbers their 1v1 equivalents, which is the fundamental reason why it's simply not financially feasible for tournament organizers to throw money at an unsuccessful venture. They tried it earlier and it didn't work, though small-scale events can be still be profitable even as 2s tournaments because there's much less overhead, large-scale events don't come close to breaking even. Take for example MLG's small 2s tournament, it was all online with only 100$ in prize money so there was practically very little expenses, which is the correct angle to come at it currently. As for balance, changes for 1v1 often have different effects for 2v2 and vice versa. Blizzard's doing a pretty good job so far, and getting continually better, of balancing the current six matchups. Throwing in like 20 more matchups would just be absurd, and aside from that the dynamics of 1v1 and 2v2 army compositions are frequently so different that many changes that would help balance in 1v1 would screw it up in 2v2 and vice versa. Blizzard has already stated they don't want to completely separate the different multiplayer modes so that units actually function differently if you play 1v1, 2s, 3s etc, so that's out of the picture as well. There's another issue that seriously hampers having big 2v2 tournaments, and that's pro player focus. Because the 1v1 and 2v2 metagames are completely different, any time a professional player puts into one takes directly from the other. If a player wants to be successful in tournaments, to make a name for themselves, attract attention from teams or sponsors, or if they're already on a team to get exposure for their sponsors and get the prestige of placing highly in a tournament, they need to spend as much time as they can spare on their most likely chance, and right now that's by far 1v1. Even if the 2v2 scene grows tremendously those tournaments still won't be as frequent nor as rewarding in terms of viewership and prize money as 1v1, and the players simply have to choose what's best for them, which would still be 1v1. The reality right now is that the winners of 2v2 tournaments are either pro players whose entire focus is 1v1 (like an MC-JaeDong team) and they just dip in to take the tournament with their mechanics, or the tournament is so small that no pro players are interested and it's all aspiring pro players who also don't do much 2v2. There's another issue in the way of big 2s tourneys, and that's the difficulties with having an offline tournament. Because practically all 2s players are 1v1-focused pros taking a swing at some free cash, MLG or IPL or GOM or whatever, they can't structure a 2s tournament to take place at the same time as the 1v1 side of it, because all the good players would do 1v1 and the usual 2s teams that do well in online tournaments wouldn't be present, they'd all be in the 1v1 part. So if MLG wanted to start incorporating 2s into their circuit in a big way, it wouldn't make sense to have their 2s tournament immediately following or in front of the 1v1 because then the total tournament time would roll way over the weekend, which hurts viewership. So functionally what would have to happen is an entire new league would have to be made focused solely on 2s tournaments, which would be difficult for the low viewership reasons as stated before, and because the tournament space is already fairly crowded. Basically what it comes down to in my mind is it's just not currently feasible, for the reasons above, to have big offline 2s tournaments. Right now there are some small online ones, which I think could grow a little, but it doesn't make financial sense to host a LAN tournament.
  11. Recommend me some good two-player co-ops! (Please!)

Sounds like a Lords Management would fill your hole right up, I recommend LoL or Dota 2. edit: oh idle thumbs you sly sly dog
  12. If you did it would take an incredible amount of training and practice for the swarm-cat-man to jump up and shout mcdonalds so it could get back to watching tv.
  13. Episode 214: We <3 the Swarm

There have been a couple attempts at 2v2 tournaments with actual money rewards, production, etc, the reason it's not really done anymore is because the viewership was simply never there. People don't tune in to 2v2 tournaments to nearly the same degree they watch normal tournaments. The other reason is because the game is balanced around 1v1, so pro 2v2 games all ended up being just variations of cheese or 1-base play every single game, it was pretty stupid.

Not to take anything away from chris, but playing a new song well from the get go is basically just good reading skills. If you can learn the notational sort-of-language of written music well enough, you can read a song you've never seen before while translating it into your instrument in real-time, just like you can read a sentence of english out loud. It's a skill that'll naturally develop the more you read sheet music, and definitely not out of reach for anyone. I say go for it! When you have the time I mean
  15. I found a thing on the internet that covers laptop de-dusting in functional detail, seems legit if you're interested: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090222084511AA9NxSt
  16. As I watch subsequent Idle Thumbs twitch.tv videos Chris continues to slowly morph into Jeff Goldblum. Not sure if this is a result of high video exposure to cool cool Jeff, or some secret yearning on Chris' part. I wonder if Chris could fake a Goldblum voice and posture well enough to pass, and have his shoes stolen by Nick.
  17. I just use my standard webcam and software, which is maybe why I look like a dork all the time. I wouldn't care if an app had somehow taken over my webcam and was surreptitiously sending photos of me to... Somewhere. All Someone would get is my face looking focused or frustrated or relaxed, and probably singing. It's actually a little exciting to think people are secretely using my picture for As-Yet Unidentified Tasks. On laptops though, reading this thread I realized that maybe my laptop wouldn't be always loud and hot if I dusted it, but I don't really know how to do that without deconstructing it entirely? There doesn't seem to be another vent I can blow compressed air into on the opposite side of the fan vent.
  18. Link 2 The Past: 2 Past 2 Furious

The first I heard of this game was accidentally coming across 15ish seconds of gameplay and getting a really weird sickening feeling in my stomach. I haven't paid any attention to link for a decade (since I played the crap out of link to the past on the N64 or SNES) aside from catching a bit of my friend playing wind waker, and it just completely shocked me that for all these 3 games across multiple decades apparently nothing has changed. Don't know if the game is going to be good or not, but my gut reaction is why is link the same forever?

Great news tegan go you! and him for volunteering his place. I biked home when it was seeming to thin out yesterday at noon, but it went back to full-on storm mode halfway so I got wet even through my hat and coat, made it there though: http://imgur.com/LxULK4r Afterwards I slept for 14 hours, woke up this morning, and biked here this afternoon through hail and crazy wind. God I love storms

Awesome that you came out to a friend! One of the great things about moving is you don't have to come out, you can just wear an LGBT wristband or something and people will take it at face value. Trapped at college for now, haven't slept since last night, hungry and exhausted. It's a 30 minute bike ride home, and the rain that's been pouring for the past day just started waning. I might be able to head home soon, but for now I'm tiredly grinding achievements in SC2 to the background noise of podcasts. http://i.imgur.com/wMx0Z0M.jpg

Wow, that's an incredibly courageous thing to put everything out like that! I'm sorry your family situation is so fucked, but it sounds like your mom wants to make amends. You can open up to her about what's going on without giving away where you are, maybe she'll even get it in time, and she might be willing to help you. One thing that I did when I was homeless for some time in a city was to sleep at a soup kitchen. I was able to stay there for free, and even have food sometimes, it's probably the same in most cities. It's uncomfortable of course, but the only major disadvantage is you'll need to explain what's going on to a friend and have them hold most of your valuables, because you can't have anything on you when you sleep at the kitchen, it'll get stolen. You might be forced to do this at some point, or if you start collecting benefits you might want to do this to save money. If you don't have insurance, I'd definitely recommend not buying medicine for your depression, for two reasons: 1. from experience (not personal, familial), you'll almost definitely need to do some experimenting until you land on a medicine that works for your specific case, so you won't get immediate relief and you'll have a shittier couple months or even years depending on how expensive the meds are. 2. trying to afford it will hurt your ability to buy good food and get a good night's rest, which are actually probably more important for your health anyways. But this is just my opinion and I'm no kind of professional. The cheapest, most consistently proven cure help for depression is exercise, it's been very effective for me as bipolar, I just have to stay fit and the effects are minimal. It might work for you too!

I'm in a shockingly similar situation tegan (queer/broke/mentally affected solidarity!), and I'd say definitely consider unemployment benefits if you're eligible. I know it feels like giving up, and maybe it is symbolic of that to some degree, but it's literally free money. Another option is explaining your situation and asking your parents for money, whatever they think of you now they still raised and love you.
  23. During the sc2 part there were a couple common misconceptions, and maybe you guys already know this but I'll put it out there anyways: 1. The ranking into silver, gold, platinum etc, including splitting players within those into divisions, it's all an entirely cosmetic mask placed on top of the match-making system. The way it works in reality is each player has a hidden Match-Making Rating, MMR, which determines who they're placed against, and is added to and subtracted from when winning/losing. Playing those placement games against AI has some effect on it, and it's mostly separate for your team multiplayer and 1v1 multiplayer ladders. So really, even when you get a win and become promoted to the Diamond ladder, you're actually not playing anyone different than if you had gotten any other single win, same goes for when you get demoted from a lost game. 2. On the loading screen where it says "slightly favored", "favored", "equal match" or whatever, those aren't actually accurate representations of each side's MMR. The way those signs are generated is by the number of points you could gain from a win in that match, so if you have a bonus pool you're actually probably going to see every game you play with your opponents as 'slightly favored' or even 'favored' regardless of your relative MMR. It's even possible for both players in a 1v1 to see the other player as 'slightly favored' or 'favored' on the loading screen if both players have a bonus pool, I'd even say that's a common situation. If you didn't know these facts the ladder might seem like a turbulent sea of skill-inequality, but it's actually more gradual because every match is made by finding someone with near your MMR.
  24. Post your face!

Looks like a rad party to start with, happy birthmonth! It is a nice piece, but I don't drink coffee
  25. Post your face!

I have a face too, and now it's on the internet for the second time in a long time! linked here to save space I enjoy long walks on the beach, posting on the internet, and playing games competitively, recently more computer and less physical.
