  1. The Secret World

    Fascinating!
  2. Dishonored - or - GIFs By Breckon

I'm totally looking forward to this. As someone who played through all of DeusEx:HR without killing an enemy (excepting bossfights) I can't wait to see how what amazing tools I will have at my disposal to do the same here. What especially excites me is the ability to make murders look like accidents, a la Hitman. Cannot wait to see what options there are in that respect.
  3. Sid Meier's Civilization V

    Awesome! Thanks for the infos.
  4. Sid Meier's Civilization V

Oh yeah, I was just wondering for games between me and my coworkers. I would assume games here would have to be simultaneous. Was PBEM ever a native mode to the Civ franchise? Tangential: what's a good PBEM game if Civ doesn't cut it?
  5. Sid Meier's Civilization V

Is there a setting in Civ 5 multiplayer that allows you to not play simultaneously? (one player takes a turn then must wait for the other player and so on...) I'm thinking of getting this to run in the background at work so that we can play turns during downtime.

That's interesting. I kind of felt similarly for the short time I played GoW2. I love GoW1: one of my all-time favorite games of that generation. I played through the HD remake of 1 and started on 2 but I stopped after the first chapter and haven't returned for a while. It just felt like they weren't trying terribly hard to introduce anything new to the game, just giving me more of what made the first one great. Except by this point it was slightly stale. Sequelitis I suppose. I do hope to eventually finish it and go on to the subsequent games in the franchise, I've even got the HD remasters of the PSP games...
  7. Last night was so fun. I joined with a friend and after an hour or so of wandering around I find him above Cherno and we head inland. I'm dying of thirst at this point and he has an empty water can so we head toward the nearest town with a pump. After wandering through the woods for a bit we find the town but also alert some nearby zombies. One zombie chases my friend into the woods as he tries to lose him in the trees. Having nothing to do and dying of thirst anyway, I head into town to see if I could find some water cans. I find a hatchet but little else. Meanwhile my friend had lost the zombie but gets lost himself and is slowly making his way back to my location. I manage to sneak by a worryingly large number of zombies and find the pump. I try to fill an empty whiskey bottle I had on me but I guess it only accepts water cans. So I'm stuck in this awful situation of being nearly dead from dehydration with a water source sitting right in front of me. My friend finally finds the town again but manages to alert basically every single zombie in the place. Having no ammo he just legs it toward me, maybe hoping to fill up his can at the pump before the zombies get to us. This doesn't pan out so well. We both end up getting chased by zombies and run in scattered directions. I wind up in a house and whip out the hatchet. Holy shit, the hatchet is exceedingly effective at dispatching zombies. I kill about 6 and decide: fuck it, i'm going to die of thirst - this is a near certainty - I might as well go down swinging and protecting my friend as he fills his own can. So I let him know the plan, we both head toward the pump and I hack mercilessly at the zombie horde as he fills his own bottle. Selflessly he attempts to pass me the bottle to drink first but I'm already too far gone and the bottle has fallen under a zombie corpse. I die from combined dehydration and blood loss. But I took a dozen or so zeds with me. And hopefully my friend will find that wayward water can and survive himself.
  8. Mass Effect 3

I'm not sure I want to slog through the ending chapter again! *youtubes

Yeah it's kind of like Fez in that respect. Though I think Fez mostly lived up to expectations. I haven't seen much gameplay until the above video so my hype meter was low until now. But now I am quite hyped. I also quite look forward to the local multiplayer aspect.

I should really get around to playing Q.U.B.E. I'm glad it's only a few hours, my free time has been severely truncated of late.
  11. Battlethumbs 3

We should totes organize a game. I also don't like playing anon and without voice chat.
  12. Battlethumbs 3

I'm always down to play a game or two. I think I'm in thumbtoon.
  13. NBA Street: Baltimore Edition You come at the king, you better not miss... the basket.

It is a fun setting. But I'm not sure the narrative is strong enough to stand apart from the gameplay. Let alone buried in wiki articles. I want to be stomping orcs in outer space as I hear about this stuff!

Stale and stagnant character design? Clearly Misandry at work!

Warhammer 40k Space Marine: Just finished the campaign. Like Tanukitsune, I really loved the way they implemented melee in this game. It's not just an afterthought like in most shooters, it's fundamental to the way the game is played. You need to melee to regain health which forces you to constantly engage the enemy head-on. Unfortunately, in harder areas this kind of broke the game for me. Places where there were a ton of snipers positioned behind waves of close range enemies meant you either had to charge fwd, melee and grab health constantly and probably die to a stray grenade or cumulative sniper shots or hang back and take potshots until most of the enemies were dead. Which, you can imagine, in a melee focused game, is no fun at all. Still, the moments when you're rocking the hammer and joyfully swinging and ground pounding your way through a group of enemies is visceral bliss on the level of the best Diablo crowd clearing moments. Add the jetpack scenes (of which there were not nearly enough) and you're in berserker heaven. I found the universe to be very interesting, and wish the designers had been a bit more ambitious in scope. It just sounds so amazing: a universe populated by humans, orcs, and chaos forces, all in constant struggle for domination. None is more moral than the other, judging from the harsh way humans are treated in the world of the game - which is woefully tiny in comparison. I felt such jealousy hearing captains in orbit above talk about hammering starships with pulse blasts over the radio as I trudged from broken bridge v01 to dimly lit hall v03 to arena v06. I can understand that they probably didn't have a huge leash to begin with considering THQ's financial troubles. And this was painfully apparent throughout the game. While the building blocks of gameplay and combat were fresh and enjoyable, the story was predictable and the villains trite. The final boss battle was a joke that felt like an actual retrogression of quicktime event implementation. It all felt very small time in a world that is purportedly epic in scale.

I didn't see the other thread so I posted in this one. Sorry to have accidentally reopened a can of something if I did!

Also your user icon is excellent, so you can do whatever you want. "I love the smell of sewers in the morning!"
  20. Tomb Raider

So is it a reboot in the Batman Begins sense? Any sources for that? Batman Begins would be a good reference for a reboot since Nolan changed aspects of the universe without changing essentially what Batman is. Either way I don't think it's unfeasible that Lara would want to become a professional Tomb Raider after all this. What I wager is this experience toughened her up, made her the bad ass we see in all the other games. The whole grandfather VO in the trailers saying: 'you're a croft I believe in you etc.' signifies she started the story not thinking she could be a hero/adventurer and finishes feeling like a hero. It's the classic hero's journey.
  21. Tomb Raider

    I say.
  22. Tomb Raider

    Indeed.

Yep, I'm not disagreeing with the fact that Rosenburg's comments are misguided and extremely creepy. But he's not a writer he's an exec producer. I'm not making a judgement until we see more information. Squid, I think the hitman nun bit is a lot more clear cut because we're not talking about the game in that case we're talking about a fucked up trailer that's fucked up on its own merits. I don't think the Tomb Raider trailer is on the same level at all. Rosenburg's comments are but I have no idea how integral to the writing process he was. That's why I'm withholding judgement.
  24. Tomb Raider

I'd like to see more of this game before making as much a judgement call as the Mary Sue author did. Lots of assumptions are being made in that article such as: "fail state=watching a woman get raped." While there are some problematic aspects of the premise thus far, I don't think making a character vulnerable is automatically belittling them. That's pretty much what survival horror is all about: feeling vulnerable in a dangerous world. And they appear to be mixing survival horror elements into this game. Now: if it comes out that she needs a strong male protagonist to help her succeed then yeah that'll be super sexist. But she may well not. Either way, we don't know yet. The lesson learned here is don't let that guy do interviews anymore I guess.

I don't know if this has been posted anywhere but it's an interesting project and the idea that some gaming forums are actively organize to frighten her off is revolting. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/566429325/tropes-vs-women-in-video-games
