  1. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

    Intent really is magic!
  2. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I am honestly baffled by how many people have chosen simply to ignore the existence of the logs because they are just too damning to everything they're invested in here.
  3. anime

I am embarrassed by how many words I read while still plausibly believing that it was going to turn into an anime comment at some point.
  4. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I think their whole manifesto opens them up to bad things. Like seriously: Also, the copywriter in me couldn't help removing the three excess commas in the opening statement. Seriously people, commas don't just act as dramatic pauses in sentences, they have a grammatical function.
  5. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Yeah, I'm sure there's always a malicious side to it, but I most often see people like that using fallacies that have just been pointed out to them in previous conversations. I feel like, for many of them, it's a matter of thinking, "Oh, so that's another rule for me to follow, another way to win!" You know, as if learning how to identify (or at least to plausibly accuse someone of making) every fallacy ever will make for an airtight argument that always holds the moral high ground.
  6. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

Bioshock 2 took four or five hours to grab me. Up until that point, I despised the game for being a rehash of a predecessor that was already long in tooth in a lot of ways. It took fully upgrading enough of the guns and accumulating enough plasmids so that I had actual tactical options in a given fight and wasn't always optimizing for my only gun with upgrades and/or ammo. From that point onward, I enjoyed it immensely, but I also recognize that the same breakpoint might never arrive for some.
  7. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I don't think it's something that's necessarily taught among most of them. I think instead that there's a certain type of person who wants conversation to be more mechanistic, with some kind of system for resolving disagreements, and a conceptual model wherein the first side to say something that could be interpreted as a fallacy is wrong or at least bears the burden of proof fills that role perfectly.

Interestingly enough, if I quote you, turn on Advanced Editing Mode, and then turn it back off without changing anything else, it displays properly:
  9. My friend just started with the base game of Arkham Horror, and how he's done it is that whenever he finds himself wishing aloud for a feature or character that is included in another expansion, he buys that expansion. So far, he has bought Dunwich Horror and nothing else. I don't have that discipline, though.
  10. I Had A Random Thought...

Not Samsung, but I have a Moto X and it is rock solid. I have had maybe two instances of software funkiness in the year I've owned it, and I got it from the bloatiest of the carriers.
  11. Personal opinion aside, there's no ad revenue on the site itself. Why do the clicks even matter?
  12. And if we go into limited-run promos I will just stop eating until I die. Thankfully, I've never known of a good promo. The Firefly one was notable for making what are already the best characters in the game even better for no really defensible reason.
  13. The Fanart Collective

When searching for a good screencap of Katerose von Kreutzer (but there isn't one, I've got a little rant about it that I'm not going to bother the "anime" thread with) I found probably the weirdest crossover art, Legend of Galactic Heroes and Southpark: By someone on DeviantArt named "sky_7."
  14. The Idle Thumbs Store

    Sean Vanaman: Shirt Boss.
  15. Depression sucks, but you are not alone.

I could have sworn we had a mental health thread, but now I can't find it. Good post, good links. Thanks, GraysonEvans!
  16. Feminism

For the egregious "wrong" of being unfaithful to another man (and really just being a woman with anything to say about video games), no punishment is too cruel. If such a mentality doesn't vindicate harsh words like what Greg Costikyan wrote, nothing does.

I appreciate that one of the commenters made bingo cards for post-leak #GamerGate apologists. These would probably make for the fastest game of bingo ever. I hit "bingo" after just two pages of comments on the link you posted.
  18. I didn't say that they're all bad. Some board games are unequivocally improved by their expansions (see, for example, the Power Up expansion for King of Tokyo). What I am saying is that a board game with a bunch of different expansions just a couple years after release turns me off as a potential buyer, because it implies a lot of extra time (to figure out which expansions are worth buying) and money (to buy said expansions) to be invested beyond the game I already own and am often struggling to get to the table already. Like I've said before, I'd just rather buy a board game that's complete out of the box, however expensive, than get the sense that my purchase of the base game is the first act of a year-long saga spent collecting and learning and pitching all the expansions piecemeal. There are also certain companies (Fantasy Flight Games, above all) that expand their games whether or not expansions make sense, and often these expansions are eighty percent terrible and twenty percent genius, which makes for another fatiguing decision to make.
  19. What is the Nadir of the Simpsons?

Nah, I was honest in saying that I really do like it. I just wish there were a metaphor for privilege that didn't leave the obvious out of "But I'd never be as careless as the person in your example..." Anyway, back to the Feminism thread! Also, my vote in the actual thread topic goes to "Homer vs. Dignity" for the many metalogical parallels to the show itself.
  20. What is the Nadir of the Simpsons?

I love it! Except that you're implying people who hold privilege are clueless and undeserving idiots like Homer, rather than the natural products of a sexist/racist/ableist society. Someone's going to see that as an important distinction.
  21. Feminism

Like brkl said, yes. Also, it's worth pointing out what I meant to post when we were talking about explaining the patriarchy and "reverse sexism" to skeptics. In the patriarchy, men are still vessels for violence, but only women are simultaneously vessels for violence and sex. It's disturbing to me how easy it is for me to imagine a "sexy" dead girl but how hard it is for me to imagine an equally "sexy" dead guy. Is he just buff and dead? I mean, it works, but it's hardly a stock image in Western culture... It's also worth pointing out proportions. What percentage of men who are the subject of news reporting are victims of violence, what percentage of women? It's interesting how gender influences what is "newsworthy" about someone. This applies to games as well. You shoot a lot of guys in any given shooter, but I bet a lot of guys don't get shot in them, too. Meanwhile, every woman in almost every AAA game is the victim of violence or sex or both, which isn't too hard to achieve when there's like a half-dozen women in each game.
  22. I Had A Random Thought...

Why does UPS send me a delivery notification by email if there is literally no way to change the time of delivery or otherwise inform them that I will not be at home? I can change the day, but there's no option to have them not deliver at 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. It's like they're taunting me.
  23. I managed to push through it with Battlestar Galactica, but that's the only one. Even there, I bought all the expansions, played about a half-dozen games where all they did was add complexity, confusion, and playtime to an already-complete design, and then spent about three months agonizing about not owning the "full" game anymore as I sold them off on eBay. FFG is the biggest culprit for this (half their expansions are just like, "Hey everybody, now that you've reached the end goal of this game, put everything down and play a smaller and shittier game-within-a-game to see if you really reached the end goal!") but I can see Kickstarter stretch-goal bloat getting just as bad. I bought into the Fief 1429 kickstarter and got kind of grossed out by all the "exclusive" expansion packs they came up with by the end.
  24. Am I the only person who gets exponentially more fatigued the more expansions exist for a game that's already good just out of the box? I am like ninety percent less likely to play The Duke now, it's reaching Arkham Horror territory.
