  1. Movie/TV recommendations

Maybe it's because of Tim Burton's mediocre Planet of the Apes, which this movie seems like a threequel to but is in fact something else and better. I don't know, I know some of my friends have been surprised that it turned out okay.
  2. A children's treasury, except for the NSFW bits and all the 'fucks'.
  3. Feminism

How does this work in the case of Not Always Right-style customers claiming racism because the staff aren't doing something unreasonable for them?
  4. Recently completed video games

PixelJunk Eden is pretty good. It's not great, though, because they ran out of ideas and started making levels that don't work well with the mechanics. Garden 7, the gravity switching level, and Garden 8, the horizontal level, are big offenders. If I was going to give it stars, I would give it 3 and a half stars.
  5. From what I understand, TotalBiscuit does this too, except he puts his payola disclosure in the About text, which is still illegal under FCC rules because it has to be presented with the paid content at the same priority as the paid content.
  6. Minimalism

Well, that's the problem: there's a long history of pranks played on over-important fields that seem to have no critical facility to separate good works from works assembled at random - Naked Came The Stranger, Ern Malley, the Sokal affair - and it feels like the game press, to their credit, saw Mountain as a weird little Tamagotchi-like thing that had some charm to it but not a lot of gameplay, and that was fine because it was entertaining and charming on the terms it presented itself as. If it was a hoax, it was a poor one, because it felt exactly like the work of an animator making a game for the first time, big on ideas but short on making them accessible to players.
  7. I Had A Random Thought...

I can't listen to that all the way through. I cannot believe that it is legal.
  8. I love how Casablanca was just another film and everyone was glad it was over. There's a certain feeling creators get when they know that they've made something that's really, really good, and no-one felt that for Casablanca.
  9. Feminism

I can think of a reason: 4chan have been running anti-feminism raids this year, and apparently they got into a slappy fight with Tumblr recently. I also believe the accusation post is too credible to really be a work of 4chan anti-feminists. I found it fascinating how little I would consider how the accuser was feeling. She is the victim here (let's assume this isn't a false accusation).
  10. Re: 4:30ish in the video: So wait, I'm confused. If the feminist cabal has taken over the Idle Thumbs cabal, does that mean the Idle Thumbs cabal is now part of the feminist cabal, or does it mean that the Idle Thumbs cabal operates within the feminist cabal and takes direction from it? Does this mean that all the walking simulator games are suddenly going to become lo-fi games about queer themes, or does it mean that Anna Anthropy will be getting to work on her new game where you walk down the streets of SF in the 90s after a Pride Parade? Or anyone else who wants to because I kind of want to see how that turns out.
  11. Feminism

So, Max Temkin (of Cards Against Humanity fame) was accused of raping a girl while he was in college, and in reply he posted a long, somewhat mansplainy post on Tumblr where he says he thought he had consent, then says he's not going to sue her for libel because he's the better man apparently. Do not know how to feel about it all.
  12. Fan Fiction

I'd guess the first one. Ada Lovelace gets a lot of credit as the first computer programmer, but Grace Hopper doesn't get nearly the same amount of props as she should. She was one of the early greats - named computer problems as 'bugs', and wrote the first compiler, without which we'd be writing computer code in binary and three-letter mnemonics.
  13. Yeah, I figured the Fire Emblem stuff was because the most recent Fire Emblem was super popular so it's An Official Nintendo Franchise now.
  14. Assassin's Creed: Buccaneer

I feel like they'd be a lot more fun if they were structured like a time trial: the shanty is always just ahead of you, and if you run to where it blows away in time, without getting too far away from it, it blows into your face and you collect it. A lot of the problem is that it's not hard to go where you mean to go, but it's very hard to change direction once you're going that way, because the traversal is made up of lots of blended animations. If the game was more obvious about the path it means you to travel, it'd be much better. Many of those shanties were best collected by climbing up to it, jumping off, running across the ground, then waiting for the shanty to float by.
  15. Minimalism

Certainly you can't really use Ben Kuchera as an example of problems with game writing unless the problems are 'Ben Kuchera keeps getting hired and none of his peers seem to notice he's a hack'.
  16. I think there is no chance that Danielle will play the new Pokemon in November given that Polygon employs Griffin McElroy. Unless the new Pokemon includes a platforming segment.
  17. I can tell Sean apart fairly easily, because he talks a lot faster than either Nick or Jake, but I definitely confuse Nick and Jake.
  18. No, use the negative space in the Os, that's what I definitely did not do
  19. The amount of forcing you have to do, though... ...I mean, I didn't just do a sketch to see how you could fit 'be my friend' out of the space between 'OLLY MOSS', no. That'd be insane. I'm just talking out of my ass, having put no thought to it at all!
  20. Steven Erikson and The Malazan Book of the Fallen

I am intrigued by a fantasy series that spends time looking at the nitty-gritty details, but I'm worried about the writing style. How would this compare to, say, Ian Irvine, or Daniel Abraham?
  21. Comics Extravaganza - Pow Bang Smash!

I am disturbed by BMO drawing 6 versions of itself on the page.
  22. Fan Fiction

I am baffled by the final sentence. I was not expecting an art reference in a paragraph referencing fat children in swingsets, Lazy Sunday and Sixpence None The Richer.
  23. Fan Fiction

From what I remember, Mary Sues don't have to be liked, but there is always this element that other characters are reacting in a way that is inconsistent with their existing characters, but reflecting the way the author reacts to the existing characters.
  24. I Had A Random Thought...

I've heard the same assessment from other places. You are a unicorn, teg, and when you leave, the world is duller for its loss. Or so people kept telling me on Twitter, so I had to unfollow them because they were being weird.
  25. I am of the strong opinion that the 'it's' is not just a dateline, but a dateline and a topical reference.
