  1. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

The joke for YTMNDs are the juxtaposition between music, an animated gif and maybe some text. Fairly simple tool but it was never exactly a hotbed for creativity.
  2. A question about Braid

I think we've had more time to work out what Blow was getting at than we would have had then. Blow's all but confirmed some aspects of the reading.
  3. Feminism

(it bothers me a little that a lot of the people affected by GamerGate are doing victim support and advocacy instead of what they were doing. It feels like they're unable to do the fairly reasonable thing they originally set out to do. It's bullshit that a games designer like Zoe Quinn can't dedicate all her time to making games, or Anita Sarkeesian can't make those quick five videos she intended and move on to something else.)
  4. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

That kind of is a good logo for a board entitled Politically Incorrect because Nazism is certainly incorrect politics and also they are actually Nazis
  5. Movie/TV recommendations

Aunty Tina Turner and the Thunderdome were cool, yes, but also only the first act of the film. It really feels like they've got lots of great ideas that never quite gel. I think it's also one of the first treatments of post-apocalyptic tribes that has a language and history that's clearly drawing from the past but is also starting to shed its origins. I imagine there's sci-fi books that do it, but it's harder in a book because you don't have the visual and aural components.
  6. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

Donkey Kong tried to apologise! But yeah, I agree. The boss fights are structured around every boss taking 9 hits, and so three hits, three phases. Thankfully Retro decided that meant that they'd switch up strategies on every phase, so within a phase the attacks get more complex. Even then, though, there's so much thought put in, like with the polar bear boss knocking spiked blocks across the platform, and on one of them he winds up, pauses, then hits it, to mess up your timing once you got into a rhythm.

Slashdot taught me the iPod has no wireless, has less space than the Nomad, and is therefore lame.
  8. Movie/TV recommendations

Ho boy, Mad Max 3 is a perfect example of not being able to make a good sequel. Mad Max 1 and 2 feel very different. Having seen Mad Max 3, I'm looking forward to Fury Road because most of the mistakes of 3 have clearly not been made in Fury Road. That doesn't mean it won't have its own mistakes, just that Fury Road at least has car crashes and larger-than-life gangs.
  9. Unnecessary Comical Picture Thread

I think that classic summary is superior to the Uncomfortable Plot Summaries because it doesn't just accurately summarise the movie, but it does so while implying a very different genre. The Uncomfortable Plot Summaries have genre mostly stripped out.
  10. Job Hunting

Man, it's a behavioural question. They don't care about managers so much as they care about how you deal with negative feedback, and if you've never got negative feedback then that's a red flag.
  11. Where in the World - Idle Thumbs Map

I'm really disappointed that that random point in the Pacific is not R'lyeh.
  12. Man, if only the Zelda series would try bold experiments in tone and structure more often.
  13. I think the only gaming podcast I actually listen to are the Thumbs. I've never found a gaming podcast that covered gaming news that I actually liked - I considered picking up Isometric but the discussion over how bad the GOTY episodes were warded me off some.
  14. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Rockstar has a long history of controversy, but it's largely been from people who don't play the games, while they're used to the idea that they get great reviews and everyone's hyped. If people are ambivalent about Rockstar games, if they don't have the cultural cachet that 2K relies on to sell its games, things get more interesting.
  15. A question about Braid

The epilogue has several places where additional text can be shown that makes each screen's relevance to the game's themes clearer. I suspect that's involved in one of them.
  16. Movie/TV recommendations

I had heard that The Imitation Game glossed over Alan Turing's sexuality. I'm not sure what movie those people saw. I'm pre-disposed to liking it because he is one of the titans on whose shoulders I currently stand, but I liked it. It's Oscar bait, but they didn't fuck it up and that's all I care about.
  17. General Video Game Deals Thread

Guild Wars 2 will be $10 through ArenaNet's website this weekend to coincide with what is widely expected to be an expansion announcement at PAX South, and a double XP weekend (which is funny because XP is not exactly hard to get in that game). Edit: it was indeed an expansion announcement, although unlike most MMOs all the gear currently available will continue to be best in slot come the expansion's launch.
  18. I Had A Random Thought...

Yeah, 'lame' and 'retarded' both have the same problem and I forget the word but you know what it is. 'Lame' was pretty easy to cut out, 'retarded' was more difficult because of that je ne sais quoi, which, yeah, does come from prejudice against mental disabilities. The meaning that it's evolved into, 'wilfully ignorant (to the point where you resemble someone who has an actual disability)', is very close to 'fuckwitted' so I realised I could use that instead, with 'lackwitted' for polite company. Far as I can tell, this isn't a slur, and is actually a little better because it sounds a little archaic and is a little more precise: you're not saying their faculties are neurodivergent, you're saying that they're not inclined to use them.
  19. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

This is kind of a middling article but it does contain a thought that hadn't occurred to me: ...and then it tries to claim that Anita is bad at her job without any backup so fuck that guy, but it's an interesting point: Rockstar must shit themselves every time a new Tropes vs Women game comes out because here is someone who has a critical viewpoint who doesn't care in the slightest about the game's scope or ambition or fidelity or fun factor in her critical work. I wonder if Tropes vs Women has had a measurable effect on sales figures of certain games.
  20. The Great Debate: Legalization

I think 'no-one has ever died from weed overdose' and 'it is impossible to die from weed overdose' are two different things. Of course, the apparatus to test this out would run the risk of the user dying from suffocation, not cannabinoid overdose... Drug testing is broken, as well - there's a strong incentive to find ways to perform the tests so that the treatments look good and the side effects don't obviously manifest, and most tests only prove that the drug is better than placebo (i.e. it actually does something) and not the actual question, which is finding the best treatment. Again, this is one reason why it's useful to have a good doctor on your side, because they're more capable of finding data from other countries where regulation is... well drug regulation's pretty bad everywhere, really, but where drug regulation is seen as a public good and not a drain on the free market. The FDA was pretty badly broken by the HIV epidemic, where they were caught against ensuring treatments were safe, and dealing with patients who were angry, mobilised, and willing to put literally anything in their bodies. This compounds with the problem where the FDA is also the agency responsible for withdrawing drugs from sale, which they're usually loathe to do because it implies the FDA made a mistake, and almost always results in a "patient's group" (often secretly funded by the pharma company) causing a big stink because they can't get their life-saving pills any more.
  21. Plug your shit

Oh yeah, Armello, my housemate played that at PAX Aus. I'm not sure what he thought of it.
  22. Life

Maybe your profile was being filtered because of unacceptable language It's a clbuttic problem with that area of the world
  23. BATTLETOADS!

Why would you bring back Battletoads? The only thing it had to offer was its knock-off Turtles theming and the Turtles are not the cultural force they once were.
  24. The Great Debate: Legalization

and also is a trained medical professional It's not like they make them take 5 years just to pull up the rope ladder, that shit's complicated and reading one study - or indeed the side-effects provided by the regulatory agency, which can be out of date - is not sufficient to judge whether a course of treatment is going to be the most effective you have access to. (This is complicated somewhat by how medicine in America is more expensive - obviously if a good medicine is out of your price range and weed isn't, and weed'll work ok, then weed's better than no treatment which is what you'd be looking at.)
