Idle Explorers (Spelunky, um, thumbs)

Yeah well mimes do have a way of sneaking up you -
The government actually turns a blind eye to the goon squads each supervillian employs because they can count them in their employment numbers. Also some of them offer great benefits...like the Penguin's 401k contribution is insane.

Turns out our undoing won't be from the military industrial complex, but from Facebook/Google one-upmanship http://www.nbcnews.com/tech/social-media/facebook-buy-drone-company-titan-aerospace-60-million-n44056

This one is SUPERGIANT! Tone Control 10: Amir Rao & Greg Kasavin
Professor Video Games replied to Steve's topic in Tone Control Episodes
I thought it was interesting how the conversation started on the benefits of having very well defined constraints at the start of making a game then moved to the iterative nature of development that happened on Bastion. I imagine that's a tough line to walk in keeping development on schedule while having the flexibility to allow for new systems and ideas to emerge as you go. Anyway, good stuff! Looking forward to Transistor. -

Idle Thumbs 147: The Titan Falls
Professor Video Games replied to Sean's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I'd argue that the startup comparison isn't valid. At startups, the salary may not be able to match larger companies, but the tradeoff is a much larger potential upside. Employees at startups are dished out shares of stock with the hopes that one day they'll either go public or get bought out and make the people that got in on the ground floor rich (with the additional bonus Merus mentioned about getting to be in more control of your work). Now game development studios are another story. Legions of people willing to work for nothing for their dream job when comparable jobs in other industries pay more. So if people are unhappy and leave, who cares because there's plenty willing to take their place. And this may come off as cynical, but everyone is money-motivated and if you need your employees to work long hours for you and you really care about them, you should do your best to pay them well and not spout some bs about it not being important. I'm pretty sure I'm ranting here, so I'm just going to go to bed now -
Idle Thumbs 147: The Titan Falls
Professor Video Games replied to Sean's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Well, there is this part: "- Annual Salary: Negotiable, but you should know up front we’re not a terribly money-motivated group. We’re more likely to spend less money on salary and invest that on making your day-to-day life at work better." They also admitted to being intentionally understaffed and say there is a terrible work/life balance there. Fuck. That. -

ObjectiveGameReviews.com - A Subtle Journey of Discovery
Professor Video Games replied to TychoCelchuuu's topic in Video Gaming
If it's just a single cut of gameplay footage over the review, what is the video format really adding? I think some editing to make the video go with the dialogue in some way would improve it...showing the inane items/sounds as they are listed off and things like that. I'd also say an extremely monotone human voice might be worth trying out instead of the robo-voice...you know, to really demonstrate the human objectivity involved here (robo-voice is also good, just something to consider). -

I've got a G700 that I really like as it can be used as both a wired and wireless mouse. The sensitivity is good, it's useful when I want to use my PC on TV, and the extra buttons are very configurable. On the other hand, these new "s" models are super ugly and I'd probably avoid them because I'm a superficial kinda guy.

Bioshock Finite: Irrational Games shuts down
Professor Video Games replied to gregbrown's topic in Video Gaming
I'm a little late so I'm just gonna jump right on into this second iteration of the infinite loop with my two cents. Personally I think the studio shutdown aspect of this whole thing isn't that remarkable as it's tragically all too common in the game development industry, but that letter Levine put out is downright weird. It basically boils down to "Hey I'm tired of doing this big studio thing so we're letting go of nearly everyone." I just don't see how it's in anyone's interests to phrase it in such a way as to make the shutdown appear to be because Ken Levine got bored and is throwing everyone under the bus when it's so obviously not the case (the most likely real issue is, as always, money). I think had that letter been phrased differently then yeah there still would probably be some angry tweets and a few articles about what went wrong at Irrational, but that would probably be about it. Oh well! -

I got to Hell and beat Yama for the first time. Hurrah! I had some insanely close calls...probably should have died at 11:20 and 46:15. Also I had to use about 30 bombs to beat olmec after he got stuck on a ledge I missed in the narrow shaft I made to kill him. -
