  1. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

Would pay for a Kuribo's Shoe kart.
  2. A little late but I finally watched this. About a minute in I realized I'd seen it before but it'd been long enough that I'd forgotten the details. I liked the movie alright, but I can't say it's going to leave much of an impression on me (again). I liked the flow of it from scene to scene (except that gag with the mom which I found really jarring) and Charlie's musings and self doubt, but I think he was just too detached for me to really get drawn in. I mean at one point he kills a man and it doesn't get much of a reaction out of him. Maybe that's why some people liked the long flashback, myself included...I felt it was a little more narratively and emotionally interesting.
  3. The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS

How about there's a monthly fee to stream out games but it's free with Amazon Prime? More realistically, ad free viewing with Prime?
  4. The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS

Also why they went with a third party system instead of Google's.
  5. DOTA 2

    Well that was quick...
  6. DOTA 2

I know so so little about DOTA but I'm watching as well. Who won the first game? And what studio is Team Generic from?
  7. Fez

Ah that's too bad...the way the game shows you how to decode the tetrimino code is a pretty cool "aha" moment. Spoilering a video of how to actually figure it out:
  8. Fez

    No I meant anticubes too...
  9. Fez

There's only one puzzle that requires deciphering the language right? And it's not even a mandatory one for completing the game.
  10. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

In MGS3 there is a man who controls bees and wears bee armor and shoots bees out of a tommy gun (made of bees) and throws bee grenades at you. Video games.
  11. Spelunky!

The shortcuts themselves aren't that helpful, but the tasks required for unlocking them are nice pre-Olmec goals to set while learning the game. And yeah it's just the random coffins you can't unlock in the daily. Guys like Van Helsing are always there.
  12. I Had A Random Thought...

For some reason Hitman Go is flagged as incompatible with my one year old tablet while apparently ok with my significantly older smartphone. I even emailed Square Enix support asking why and their response was basically "wait for us to patch in more devices." Very frustrating.
  13. I Had A Random Thought...

I think it's safe to say we're all Social Justice Wizards here.
  14. P.T (Playable Teaser for Silent Hills)

They should have brought Phil Fish on board...I'm pretty sure there are people that believe there are still secrets hidden in Fez. This stunt would have been amazing if something like it were done, say, in the PS1 era and the game was on some random demo disc. Anyway, I played this last night. Didn't finish but I liked what was there. I thought the atmosphere was great and though yeah, some of it's a bit cliche, it's well executed. I've never played any of the Silent Hill games but I'm curious to see how this one turns out.
  15. Enemy Starfighter: Freespace + Flotilla (or: X-Wing + Homeworld)

So with this, Star Citizen, and Elite Dangerous all coming up, I feel like I should consider buying stock in a joystick manufacturer.
  16. The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS

I was really hoping that it was from the sale of a single $200,000 ship. Oh well...
  17. The threat of Big Dog

On the bright side, they'll eventually be replaced by adorable petabots.
  18. Damn it, but computers have become really complicated

How did I miss that you tried the repair thing? Sigh. Anyway my next suggestion is that you throw it out a window.
  19. Damn it, but computers have become really complicated

If you have it handy you can try throwing in a windows install cd and using its repair function.
  20. Idle Thumbs 170: Esophagus Sarcophagus

I don't really think that's the case here. It's not just that we're familiar with the industry but that we are accepting this behavior as the norm. By using these words we're inherently accepting that all games should be sequelized and exploited and that they're just corporate products (Chris said all this better than I can/will). At best these are the sorts of things I, as an end user, shouldn't care about. This sort of behavior happens in politics a lot. Events or platforms are spun via very carefully chosen (and endlessly repeated) words with the intent of influencing and being adopted by the audience. These may not all qualify as jargon, but look at things like "pro choice" vs "pro life", the insane overuse of the world "socialism", or the language being thrown around in the coverage of what's happening in Ferguson ie "protest" vs "riot" vs "angry mob". It's something to be aware of because the way these things can sneak into your own usage can be easy to miss.
  21. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

From a narrative perspective it would be weird to make her mentally disabled when it's clear she exists explicitly to contrast with Clem in how people handle the apocalypse, especially when the exact same scenario was described by that other girl with regards to her sister. If she had a disability it makes the whole choice of whether or not to leave her behind lose its meaning (at least in the context of that episode). Personally I never thought she had those sorts of issues, but I'm not going to discount the possibility that I was just oblivious to their story cues because being oblivious is my standard mode of operation.
  22. Gamescom 2014: Sprechen Sie deutsch?

My guess would be that both parties must be PS Plus members.
  23. The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS

System architectures were a lot different then. Porting from one to another wasn't trivial. These days it's a lot less excusable since both the PS4 and Xbox are so PC-like, dev tools are way more friendly, and with a little bit of extra time/money you are adding millions to your potential audience. These days "timed exclusives" from big time third party studios are just annoying attempts to squeeze a little extra cash out of Sony or Microsoft. Bleh.
  24. Gamescom 2014: Sprechen Sie deutsch?

This Share Play thing sounds interesting. I'm curious what the limitations on it are. http://blog.us.playstation.com/2014/08/12/upcoming-ps4-system-update-to-v2-00-to-add-share-play-youtube-and-more-to-come/
