  1. I've only just started playing Dota2 but I 100% endorse the Soccer\Football comparison, and i'd go further and say in some way's Dota2 actually comes closer to nailing the sort of moment to moment tactics of the modern game than things like Fifa do. Denying and the idea of controlling the position of creep waves to control where a engagement takes place, comes closer to the modern idea of using possession defensively than anything I've seen. Add to that the biggest repeat failure of football video games is taking into account just how important positioning is. Using your movement to drag someone out of position, so your team mates can take advantage of it is something that is as key to modern football as it is to getting a gank. I don't know perhaps it's because i'm so new to lord management but finding a game that actually has constraints on how aggressively you can attack even at low skill levels has meant Dota is really impressive to me, despite the fact i think in terms of my early play experience i kinda preferred LoL. Side note: your wrong about football not snowballing, though i will admit the effect isn't as strong as it is in a LoMa it is still there.
  2. In relation to what some of the readers have been saying about the thumbs choices of games, I really feel that the Thumbs should just keep playing what they feel like playing. Trying to pick games because they are high profile or not their usual taste would kill what makes the show great. Those great moments where someone just starts exhorting the virtues of the game and the whole crew goes off on a stream of consciousness chat just trying to unpack why it works so well for that person wouldn't happen if they didn't love what they were playing. People saying Crusader Kings was outside their normal game type forget the thumbs have always had a strong interest in strategy games, and that as much as i loved Saints Row 3 i'd never want to see Chris playing it out of some weird sense of obligation. As for today's guest, I actually started playing the Saints Row series because of listening to Danielle's and co-host Brandon's enthusiastic anecdotes about Saints Row 2 on the Jumping the Shark podcast a few years back, so it was a nice surprise to hear her talking about the latest version with the thumbs. Also I think the thumbs habit of inviting people because they are their friends rather than any other big criteria has always been a strength, when someones at ease they are far more likely to just speak their mind.
  3. Oh god, you can rename vassal's titles.............. I'm not sure what nick & chris will end up doing with this but i know it will probably end with me laughing my socks off
  4. Right ladies and gentlemen, my old mouse is on its last legs, and when I searched the forums i couldn't find any threads on pc gaming hardware choices so i thought i'd start one in the hope that A: i might get some useful advice on my problem, B: it might in future prove a useful spot for others with similar problems in the future anyway this is the faithful workhorse Mx1100 that has served me well the past few years I tend to mostly use a mouse while playing strategy games, & MMO's BUT I'm planning on making a foray into Lord Management in the near future and it's the seemingly very mouse intensive nature of that genre that has made me make the leap and decide i need to upgrade. Watching Sean on the Thumbs stream was kinda a scary reminder of just how many clicks I'm going to need to be making, and just how important get the timing of those clicks right is going to be if I'm going to be proficient at managing lords. So any and all suggestions are welcome. I'm currently considering the following 4 and if any thumbs have any experience with any of them or other outstanding choices id be glad of the info. Roccat Kone XTD Logitech G500s Razer Deathadder and also.... (drum roll) the CYBORG r.a.t.5
  5. Sometimes though you just have to ride your luck and see where it takes you. My entire current game spans from deciding I wanted to try and create a dynasty for Ragnar, completely screwing up the marriage i gave him before taking control of the character then spending years just letting things happen while trying to rectify my early mistake. All the hideous fuck-ups I made earlier made that end result (which was basically a 1,000,000 to 1 chance) all the more amazing.

Think you put it perfectly when you praise it's "restraint", really feel like i need to see it again.
  7. PC Peripherals Question/s & (hopefully) Answers

Wow had never seen a page like that before, definitely interesting info even if i don't think it would have changed my decision had i known it earlier. Think I'm somewhere between the "palm" & "claw" grips as I do tend to arc my hand a bit but I do rest the body of the mouse in my palm. As i said earlier i hate the "feel" of glossy plastic, one of the reasons why i really took to the mouse when i tried it out in store

Have you seen http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolf_Children yet Tegan? It a return to the small scale slower paced interpersonal stuff from Girl Who Leapt Through Time, rather than the high paced visually stunning narrative style Summer Wars and it's ensemble cast played with. I'm not sure I prefer it necessarily, they set out to do very different things, but it's definitely strong enough to give a unreserved recommendation to.

I ended up getting "that thing". Thanks for the late recommendation Sno. The M65 fit my palm really well and the buttons had a really nice solid click to them. Think the R.A.T was a surprise 2nd choice for me, feeling a lot more solid than it looks. Currently tweaking the new mouse's sensitivity levels to fit my personal taste really like the sniper button and can imagine it being very situationally usefull
  10. PC Peripherals Question/s & (hopefully) Answers

I'm going to go round a few bricks and mortar stores to actually try out a few of the contenders, I think I'll try and get my hands on both the G500 & the G500s an see if there is any noticeable difference in the way the mice feel. I've got a Razer Nostro pad and i really like the semi-matt finish they use. Thanks for that tip if there's not a noticeable difference in feel I might go for the cheaper version. I've always been a little wary of extra buttons on things like the naga, but then again I use a Razer Nostromo which I now almost can't game without and i know felt incredibly awkward to begin with, so I'm open to the idea that I could learn to love a true multi-button mouse like bradleclerc does. But in the end I think I'm similar to Elmuerte in that most of my pc gaming has been done with a keys plus just the basic 3 mouse buttons (even if the mouse I have allows more).
  11. PC Peripherals Question/s & (hopefully) Answers

ahh the naga, i took a look at it but i'm worried after years of using a mouse with a 'thumb rest' area a mouse with keys in the exact same area would just lead to miskey after miskey. That said people do seem to speak very highly of them in general. What type of game do you typically use it for bradleclerc? i can see it's utility in mmo's certainly but do things like DOTA really benefit from all those keys?
  12. Crusader K+ngs II

Is it considered fair game to basically "abdicate" your titles to your intended heir if you've managed to engineer a situations where hes currently the legitimate heir but you feel that your not likley to be able to sustain that situation in the long term? Edit: didn't matter in the end managed to stick it out long enough for my soon to inherit, now i just have the unholy mess of trying to keep a empire together with a new king. Any opinion on wheter grand tournaments are best held early in a reign or later?
  13. anime

I think it might have actually been on there at one time, (but that may be my memory playing up)but what seems to happen with CR most of the time is a series generally gets pulled from the catalogue if it isn't ongoing & has come out on DvD in that region I didn't mention http://www.crunchyroll.co.uk/Durarara because its been around for a while but if it works you should check it out although its has a almost schizophrenic tendency to swap between light-heartedness and a more dark tone.
  14. anime

Ok just gonna throw stuff at you & hope that some of it sticks.. http://www.crunchyroll.com/the-eccentric-family Certainly ticks the light-hearted box, it's not amazingly funny nor is it art especially notable(although its certainly more than competent) but very energetic and caries it's audience along nicely while building some interesting plot threads (so far). http://www.crunchyroll.com/my-little-monster Pretty sure we have covered this one before. Totally unoriginal concept but all in all ends up being a solid example of its genre, with somelikeable characters http://www.crunchyroll.com/humanity-has-declined Incredibly hit & miss with its humour and your reaction to it well may depend on how you feel about the very slow pace it takes. http://www.crunchyroll.com/kids-on-the-slope JAZZ also completely insubstantial but enjoyable are: http://www.crunchyroll.com/hanasaku-iroha http://www.crunchyroll.com/chihayafuru there's also http://www.crunchyroll.com/monogatari which wasn't available in my region & who's worth entirely depends on if you can forgive Shaft's fanservice tendencies in return for their superb artistry or not.
  15. anime

Do you just want suggestions for shows from this season? or does the season not matter as long as you can stream it on crunchyroll?
  16. Idle Thumbs 117: Sir! Sir!

True this was a sub par teen horror that ripped off the best part of The Evil Dead for its main gimmick, but i feel on name alone it needs a mention
  17. I'd never heard the term save-scum until today but its a wonderful way of describing the "reload until i get the result I want" attitude in this sort of game.
  18. I don't think i would have paid it any attention if i hadn't been seeing the stream out of sync. Because i'm in the UK I only caught the last few mins live, then immediately started watching the rest of the stream.
  19. the great thing is 18 mins in nick says the following "I am so looking forward to the moment where there's enough to gain that we will roll the dice on a 20% assassination"
  20. SoB! ahh well still reasonably happy at getting the two dlc packs i lacked at 50% off in the summer sale despite this. The game is just a insanely good story generating system. side note: Gormongous do you know of any way to check the exact date a province was taken or other significant event happened in the course of a characters life after the fact?
  21. either way he has no incentive to confirm or deny it
  22. Ok guys I need some advice so i can see if i can somehow give my Ragnar a happy ending. using one of my earlier saves I'm now (i think) at a point where Ragnars son Sean can inherit ireland but in order to do so i need to build up the faction for Succession by Primogeniture. Any tips on how i could build up this faction (& even if this would work )
  23. That howl of realisation at the end of the cast sounded so full of anguish I feel really like it should have been delivered at the end of a 80's action film with Nick falling to his knees in the rain cradling a laptop with copy of his live journal on it.
  24. I think in a way it is, It's saying that History effectively consist of superpowers contenting with each other and effectively ends when one superpower "wins", i think someone mentioned Fukuyama earlier and i don't think its co-incidence that The End of History came from the same early 90's cultural environment as Civ.
