On the whole dandy just seems very content in who he is, and his whole situation. He basically is the living breathing sci fi representation of a very privileged character. Not exactly smug but certainly more than happy to keep on living life the way he is without making any effort to improve it. You guys are probably both right right that it's A:not meant to read that way & B: it's a pretty common trope. It's just the tone of that really felt like they were trying to frame her response as a heartfelt declaration and so it felt a little bit creepy.

My own feelings on dandy is somewhere between the two of you. I don't think it's particularly strong or offensive fanservice, but indeed as has been said it is quite gratuitous since I don't think it really serves much of a purpose other than to make dandy look a little silly. Even if we are looking down on him a little its not as if his lechery/sillyness actually leads him into much trouble. Actually thinking a bit more on it Sidenote: I do think we are holding Dandy to a higher standard than perhaps we would if it wasn't for the Watanabe influence, and in it seems here his role is more as a producer than a director.

I think I'm slowly coming round to the idea that my initial reaction of feeling very uncomfortable having watched this May have been exactly what they wanted. But there is still a lot I'm unsure about it.

A few good starters directly from the same studios/directors you've mentioned would perhaps be: -FLCL -Samurai Champloo On a more general note we have. Slice of Life: -Kids on the Slope -Honey and Clover Anything by the late and great Satoshi Kon, but considering what you've said you like these would be good starters: -Tokyo Godfathers -Paranoia Agent -Paprika Mamoru Hosoda's modern stuf so: -Summer Wars (With very minimal fantasy elements) -Girl Who Lept through time -Wolf Children Action with character development: -Michiko to Hatchin -Tekkon Kinkreet (thanks to SG for the correct spelling) -Black Lagoon Good Character development but with quite heavy SciFi/Fantasty elements: -The Eccentric Family -Planetes -Mushishi

I don't think anyone's upset by it, disappointed maybe ...The problem so far is it's a parody which is less funny than many the directors supposedly more serious work. Although....... As I type this I'm Watching episode 5 atm during half time in Uk Super Bowl coverage and it's actually kinda a good episode, doing a far better job of mixing the absurdity and drama.

+1 But also there are a few good things you can give to someone feeling a little worse for wear the next morning. What i've found to be a good combo for my hungover friends is something stodgy but with a bit mild spicyness to help wake up deadened taste buds. Bubble and Squeak is good old fashion british fry up and a great base to add whatever spices take your fancy to, just be careful not to overdo it, then you can add some good peppery sausages (meaty or veggy varietys both work)and fried eggs on the side for a very low hassle but tasty breakfast. Also i personally love fresh grapefruit juice, but tbh anything freshly squeezed will taste wonderful.

Sorry! I forgot about the whole time difference thing, watched it at lunchtime as my treat for a productive morning and then found myself feeling a little exasperated.

/sigh Dammit Trigger! I thought you'd put that stuff behind you. This is why we can't have nice things! I can't remember anything that has been so perfectly crafted one moment, and so utterly cringe worthy the next.

It really awesome what all you guys have put together, & TC's nicks really are the perfect finishing touch.

One thing worth noting about how KoDP deals with lore is that later in the game's timeline lore can becomes vital to progress. There is a system of 'vision quests' where you must send a member of your tribe to reenact the games lore in the spirit realm. Success depends upon if your choice shares qualities with the hero he or she is supposed to be playing the part of, and how well you remember the sagas of the various gods and heros. It's not just lore for lore's sakes. I think I love KoDPs for the same reason I do Farcry 2, and CK2 because it's occasional unfairness plays up to my expectation of the brutality of their respective settings.

Hearthstone: Because what Magic really needed was F2P mechanics
Codicier replied to Problem Machine's topic in Video Gaming
The main trick to enjoying it is to keep it casual. It can be really tempting to take a deep dive on a game like HS where the mechanics are so close to the surface but at high levels it is very much a pay to win game in many respects and so can be deeply frustrating. Legendary cards can often win games single handedly, so much so that the top deck in play mode is a Druid deck that comes stuffed with every legendary they can fit in. If any one wants to talk about the sort of things you should keep in mind when building arena decks etc I'm happy to have go into more depth. As for sluggishness well I can't say I've experienced much tbh, that or I've just become accustom to it, and I think I agree with Rodi generally regarding the way the animations are implemented. -
https://www.idlethumbs.net/forums/topic/7825-relaxing-strategy-game-suggestions/ That thread is kinda old but has a few suggestions for nice slow paced things you could try your hand at. You could take a shot at Crusader Kings or Europa Universalis is your feeling brave because once you Grok the UI they are great sprawling canvas of alternate history, you can explore at your own pace. Take a look at the Thumbs stream of CK2 if you want a taste. Football Manager 2014 would probably be my actual suggestion though, provided you prepared to take a deep dive into what can be a incredibly complex sim (& especially if you have any affinity for football) it's a superb way to relax and slowly build something.

Been re-watching Life on Mars. It feels like one of those drama's which is going to age incredibly well, you could broadcast it this week and it would still work really nicely, as they keep the (lack of) technology references to a minimum after the first few episodes.

It does feel having come this far it would be a shame if Sean and Nick didn't make it in.

Four episodes in and it's doing ok, they actually handle the video game stuff pretty decently, although I'm not sure how well making a plot point about chaining cooldowns would go with someone who's never played a MMO it got a solid 'yup I've done that' reaction from my brain. The one thing I'm really curious about at the moment is: can the characters see the name of their attacks in this fictional game world? Having watched the fun Kill La Kill has with that trope at times it would be cool (& actually true to the games they are referencing) if they do. Speaking if which KLK had another great episode, .

Ok gonna give it a shot, just hope I don't see any variation of the phrase "if you die in the game, you die for real!" Edit: Dear me that title sequence was painful. Oh well in Twig we trust! onwards!
-
Ok Twig, come on sell me on this. What I'm hoping for is something a bit like Spice and Wolf, but my perception of any anime based on a characters inside video game is that it will reference quasi western medieval fantasy, there will be some near future virtual reality system involved, and that they will be more concerned with referencing video game tropes (be it loot, raids, whatever) than characters development.

Congrats! Now perhaps your avatar can stop looking so terrified/nervous.

Redline really was a very very pretty piece of work. A quick search does seem to back up seems to say the hairstyle is pretty much strongly associated with youth gangs (in particular biker gangs), so perhaps in anime it's just become a visual shorthand for 'rebel/non-conformity'.
-
That's a pretty good summary, a big part of what makes Kids on the Slope work is that it nails it's sense of place/time. You probably should look to some of Ghilbi's historic stuff like Up on Poppy Hill for its closest contemporary rather than any of the many more trope laden High School works. Outside that probably the closest show would be Nodame Cantabile.

It feels like there's more in common between those two than just the pompadour. But I totally lack the knowledge to know which early anime's are candidates for common ancestors with that over the top weaponry and alien design.
-
That's a really interesting take on it. A concious decision by a creator to take apart his most famous work, and honestly after watching a few episodes it feels it fits that desiption pretty well. I'm not sure why he'd feel the need to though. I mean Kids on the Slope was utterly unburdened by any comparison to his previous work and was excellent, why would he feel the need to exorcize his past when he's already proven he can produce good work outside the confines of genre.

Ok 2 episodes into Space Dandy, so far seems ok through my beer goggles, was wondering if anyone knows if there is there a common design ancestor that both Dandy and Redline are referencing for their styles that I'm unaware of?
-
I've never actually watched a single episode of DBZ, but listening to all the love it seems to have makes me think perhaps I should make the effort. Do any of the streaming services have a back catalogue of episodes, after the day I've had I really could do with something silly to watch while I drink a few beers before bed. Although that said I might just watch a few episodes of Space Dandy

Any of you guys had issues over trademarks, domain names, social media profiles etc. relating to your games? So due to some laxness on my part I'm having to change my company name, redo my logos and all that horrible crap again. Having to do it once more has reminded me how horrifically painful the whole thing is. First you try and think of something that matches what you want your company stands for. Then you check the various trademark organisations, then you check all the social media sites and give every possible variation a good google. If your lucky you come up clean, but most of the time there's something. For instance of the half dozen names it got my replacement list to my favourite on seems to have been used by someone who never bothered to trademark it over 3 years ago for a company which seems to have vanished of the map apart from a dead website. Is there anyone out there who's actually gone through the whole trademark thing in a relatively painless fashion?
