Idle Viewers: Feminist Film Club (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, 5/18)
Synnah replied to Apple Cider's topic in Movies & Television
I've seen the film before, in what I assume was the theatrical cut. I was a teenager at the time, though, so I didn't really remember anything about it. -
Idle Viewers: Feminist Film Club (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, 5/18)
Synnah replied to Apple Cider's topic in Movies & Television
Watched Alien last night, so I'm ready to go! I went with the Director's Cut, so I'm curious what the differences to the original cut are. -
I was talking to my cousin on Steam yesterday; he's around 16, and was asking what my hopes for the election had been. I mentioned I'd voted Green but the best I could have hoped for was a Labour/SNP coalition, and it quickly became apparent that while he wasn't happy with a Tory government, what he would have preferred was a UKIP majority. I guess I should have seen it coming; I've played Civ V with him, and his tendency to always pick Germany and play in the most militaristic way possible pointed towards right-wing tendencies. Plus he's complained about unelected EU officials before, which I should have spotted as a UKIP talking point. I blocked him yesterday, because I was at work and I didn't need the stress of talking to him about this stuff, but I'm going to have to talk to him about it at some point. Obviously I want to try and talk him out of it, but it feels like he's read up on specifics a lot more than I have; said he'd read both UKIP and Green's manifesto, which I haven't done (Though I do know what most of their respective policies are). The difference between being a working adult with a bunch of interests outside of work, and being a bored school-age teenager, I guess. I don't know how successful I could be at convincing him that UKIP are awful, though. Well. At least Nigel Farage has stepped down. Maybe he'll be replaced by Paul Nuttalls of the UKIPs.

Fuck these fucking election results. I thought only two UKIP seats was a good thing, until I saw that they had 12% of the vote share. Four more years of Tory bullshit. The NHS is fucked. I knew, but I grew up in Ireland!
-
"You find out who your mates are when you make fun of them for running for UKIP. Most of mine didn't want to be associated with me." Sorry it's been a shitty situation with that guy. He sounds like a jerk.

The Roger Helmer Saga is genuinely one of the funniest things I've ever heard.
-
Finally got around to taking that political quiz, and I'm 97% on side with Green. 15% with UKIP! Distressingly, I have a higher match percentage with the BNP...

Idle Thumbs 208: Buds are Out, Keys are In
Synnah replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
This is just common sense, really. Wizard Dash Jam (Itch.io Remix) is amazing. I hope these little musical skits at the ends of episodes become more of a thing! They're always great. -
I think you mean Amiga Workbench Trading Cards.

Idle Viewers: Feminist Film Club (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, 5/18)
Synnah replied to Apple Cider's topic in Movies & Television
I'm down for watching both of those again from a feminist perspective! Amelie has been my favourite movie for some time, but I haven't really thought about it critically. I'd also like to suggest Juno, as I feel like it's saying some interesting stuff about motherhood. Looking forward to watching Alien again! I haven't seen it since I was a teenager, and I think it was mostly lost on me at the time. -
Nineties Cockpit Freakout! It is the nineties, and there is time for... whatever this is! Dowload Link: http://giraffecat.itch.io/nineties-cockpit-freakout Original Post: This is one of my favourite episode titles, and it gave me quite a vivid idea for a game. I don't want to say too much about the mechanics, as I feel like a lot of the impact will come from experiencing them, but it's basically going to be set inside a cockpit with a bunch of controls that you manually operate with the mouse. In the episode, the Thumbs guys invent a story about a kid who plays a lot of Wing Commander and is then transported to the Wing Commander universe in order to save it. I'll probably try and work this story into the game somehow. I'm going to be using UE4, with Blender for modelling. Ableton Live 9 and Sound Forge 10 for audio stuff! I'll post some stuff when I've made something worth showing.

You're the second person to mention Spectre! I hadn't heard of it before, but it seems to owe a debt to Battlezone, which was the kind of thing I was going for with the environment. Flipping the craft is way too easy! That was kind of my intention, as I positioned a thruster underneath the ship and then gave it collision, so you're never very stable when you land. I do like that, because I wanted the experience to mostly be "How the hell do I fly this thing?!", but I might play with removing that collision and making the base more stable. If you do find yourself upside down, you can fire the front thrusters (The top left slider) to flip yourself over. And yeah, I feel bad that I didn't get any kind of audio in. I spent Sunday in kind of a fugue state, and by that point I'd given up on learning new things and was focusing solely on things I already knew how to do (Building the environment and getting it into UE4). So, here's a list of things that are missing, and which I plan on adding: Title Screen. I spent ages making it, and then never even implemented it! Probably look into a credits screen and maybe some basic display options (Fullscreen/Window, resolution). Intro story. Nothing flashy, just some dialogue with character portraits. Audio! Title screen and in-game music, and sound effects for the buttons and ship (Thrusters and collision noises). Implement firing. This also means implementing things to fire at; I'm not sure what kind of enemies these should be. Stationary targets, or ships that fly around. The former requires less work, and I figure doing basically anything is going to be difficult enough as it is without adding moving targets. Get the remaining buttons working. Only one of them does anything at the moment, which is the one that turns on the wiper light (It's also supposed to activate wipers, but I didn't get around to modelling them). There are three fire buttons, a button that does nothing, a button to start the self destruct sequence and a button to stop it. Displays. I didn't have time to do anything with these at all; Some of them are going to be easier than others, but I'm going to have to look into doing some clever stuff with materials to get them working. One of these needs to be a radar. A shield/health system; I don't know if I'd want my enemies to fire at you, so maybe this would have to be damage taken from crashing into things. Probably requires some pretty smart logic that will take a while. Mouseover highlights. I didn't make these specific to the objects you're mousing over, and it looks a bit naff. Fix the bug with highlights where they tend to break if you click and release while still mousing-over the same object (i.e. what you do most of the time). Success and fail states, and the screens to go with them (Probably rendered in the same way as the title screen). Make the graphics look a bit nicer. I wanted reflectiveness from the surfaces, and the lines were intended to glow. Should be easy enough to do these in Unreal. Don't want it to impact on the performance much, though. There are probably a few other things, but I've forgotten what they are. Yeah, I think I need to rethink the sliders a bit. My initial intention was that the rear and front thrusters would be obvious when you used them, but because of the way the physics work, rear thrust doesn't actually move you forward unless you also have some amount of upward thrust. Forward thrust causes you to tilt backwards, but this isn't super-obvious. The horizontal slider in the centre is actually changing the balance of the rear thrusters, which allows you to turn, but I don't know how many people will figure this out. Perhaps I need to dedicate one of the displays to this. I want it to be difficult to get the ship to do specific things, but I don't want players to be completely bewildered by it.

I fell off right at the end, too, but was saved by infinite jump! I like how basically everything in the game has the same thumb drawing as a texture.

[Release][Testing] Mayday Mayday - Cockpit Freakout
Synnah replied to hedgefield's topic in Wizard Jam 1 Archive
I like this! It does what it sets out to do, which is create a sense of panic, really well. -
I love all of the little details in these games; even the games that were less fleshed-out had something in them that made me laugh. I agree that The Wizard and Dot Gobbler probably show the most promise, but I have a soft spot for XCOM Obama. On the subject of Dot Gobbler, I don't know how many games from that tile-based first-person RPG lineage you've played, but it's worth looking at (Or or ), and how those games deal with representing walls. There are a number of combinations of wall positions in your game that look the same, which makes it difficult to map things out in your head and meant that I had to keep switching to the map. Definitely looking forward to seeing what you go on to do with it, though. And the music you posted is really good!
-
Yeah, I was impressed by how large and mechanically sound this is! I need to go back and finish it off properly.
-
This was silly and kinda fun. A little too easy, though! Mostly you can just stay at the top or the bottom of the screen and only move to avoid the topmost or bottommost poops. I liked the art and music though! Also I found a bug: If you die and restart the game, your health doesn't get reset, so the game thinks you're already dead.
-
If it had crashed on me, I probably would have just assumed it was part of the game! I didn't trust that the game was over when it told me to press escape to quit.
-
I can get about 30 seconds into this, at which point the number of spiders becomes so intense that the framerate drops to 1fps! Is this intentional? Otherwise I like the general feel, and the audio is nicely done.
-
Yeah, this is really good!
-
This was great! I laughed all the way through. I feel like Jake was slightly mischaracterised, but Michael Bublé was pitch-perfect.
-
This is insane, and I like it a lot! I found myself pausing to the beat several times, too, at first because I thought it might actually be a solution to one of the puzzles, and then just because it was cool.

[RELEASE] Shoot that Pizza / I Like the Hair
Synnah replied to zerofiftyone's topic in Wizard Jam 1 Archive
The level of polish in these two is off the charts! The pizza-shooting is responsive and fun, too. Great work! I only disliked one person's hair, because I felt bad about it. At the end, I 'took further action', and then I felt even worse about it! -
