  1. I think generally the arena is better than buying packs. It lets you do daily quests for classes you don't have good cards for yet and not be at a disadvantage. Even if you only manage 1-2 wins you generally get some gold back at the end, and you always get a pack, so it isn't even that much more expensive than just buying packs.
  2. FTL

The problem with that is if you forget to leave 1 guy alive the AI takes over and it repairs the missile launcher that they otherwise couldn't repair. God I hate that so much.
  3. I can only speack for myself, but this is how I felt about the discussion. I have not played Monument Valley. I have played, and was super impressed by, Kentucky Route Zero. Because KR0 was mentioned in the context of the discussion, it was the lens through which I interpreted it, and was then annoyed when the things you were saying didn't match up with my experience of the game. Which is a stupid way to feel because you were talking about monument valley, not KR0, but that's how my brain read it.
  4. Webcomics

Does anyone else read The Last Halloween? It's a horror/comedy that has a good balance between things that are funny or at least lighthearted and things that are genuinely creepy. I've really been enjoying it.
  5. The argument from the podcast, so far as I can tell, is more that most game reviews don't do what Ebert did, not that games are so much more diverse than movies that you can't review them the same way. And that "Shaolin Soccer" review was good, thanks for sharing that.
  6. Tabletop Game Development

Does anyone know about any board game jams? It seems like the sort of thing that ought to exist, but I can't think of any that have actually happened.
  7. FTL

The hacking system in general is my favorite new feature so far. Like most things, you generally want to use it on weapons or shields, but using it on a teleporter is really nice if you crew is bad at fighting/you forgot to buy blast doors, and I can imagine using it on engines against one of those drones that seem to dodge everything. And like tberton said, locking people in rooms is awesome if you have a teleporter or a weapon that starts fires.
  8. Idle Thumbs GDC Meetup 2014 - 3/20 9pm at Dear Mom

I'm on my way, so I'll be a little late I guess
  9. Idle Thumbs GDC Meetup 2014 - 3/20 9pm at Dear Mom

I had fun last year, and I'll probably be in the area again even though I'm not actually attending gdc this time. What day were people planning on doing this?
  10. Double Fine's Amnesia Fortnight 2014

I made my votes partially based on what I though would be interesting to watch the development of, so to that end I'm pretty happy with the results. All of the games are pretty different from each other, and all of them are ones that I voted for, or wanted to vote for but couldn't because I didn't have enough votes.
  11. That's a fair point, and I realize my annoyance over this is kind of irrational, but I still feel like the movie is about a kind of small town that is not strongly associated with California. Maybe I'm just bothered by the fact that a pop-culture depiction of California realized through a theme park seems like a cool idea, but it feels like they dropped the ball making that a reality.
  12. Amateur Game Making Night

I think you have identified the problem I have? Maybe if you ever don't understand something I say, pretend I said nothing at all.
  13. Amateur Game Making Night

I'm basically incapable of communicating through text over the internet. Then again it's not like I'm contributing much to the hangout so maybe don't listen to me either? But actually, the hangout seems pretty cool if there are people there. Yes, you missed it.
  14. Amateur Game Making Night

I was in the hangout for ~15 minutes but then I had to leave for a job interview. I'm back now, but it's just me and dewar, and I don't really know what I'm doing, so there isn't a whole lot going on.
  15. Amateur Game Making Night

I've tried to figure out Unity a few times in the past, but I always bounce off it, and I don't really understand what it is that's causing me to not get it. I used Game Maker to make something for a game jam not too long ago, and I kind of understood what I was doing, but it was a pretty simple game. Does anyone know of a good starting point for someone who is apparently really stupid about this sort of thing?
  16. At the risk of getting even further off topic, I have some steam to let off. I find the existence of cars land to be mildly infuriating on a fundamental level. Like, ok, I get that basing an entire theme park around the idea of "California" when the park itself is already in California is perhaps kind of a dumb idea, but they made that bed 13 years ago so they might as well sleep in it. But no, they decided to add a land based on freaking "Cars", despite the fact that it is neither an especially interesting world nor even a very good pair of movies. And then there's the fact that "Cars" does not take place in California. It is in fact central to the identity of the move that it takes place in the midwest Arizona and not California goddammit. (thanks RubixsQube for correcting me on that, my point still stands though) Anyway, it seems like the problem with the fastpass system is more to do with the fact that they allow people to use them after the time window is up. If they didn't, there would always be a known maximum number of extra people in line in any given time frame. My only anecdotal evidence to support this is that I remember going as a kid and on multiple trips, waiting in line for splash mountain for ~2 hours before fastpass was added. I've been back since then at similar times of year and never seen the line that long so...I guess I don't know if that actually means anything.
  17. Early Access usually doesn't bother me, since there are so many other games I could play that I don't mind waiting for something to be "complete", or at least in a state where I'm ok with it. With multiplayer games like DayZ or Rust I have more of a problem with it though, since multiplayer communities frequently don't last all that long, I have to choose between playing an unfinished game or hoping there will still be people around when it's done. Even if a community does exist, in my experience, game communities that do have been around for a while tend to have lots of unwritten rules and expectations which is frustrating to try and get into if you haven't been there the whole time.
  18. Guacamelee

Fortunately, that part is optional. But yeah, it's absurdly difficult, and not in a way that's particularly fun. Anyway, the game is great for all of the reasons people have said already, but something else I wanted to add is, it's a medroidvania-ish where virtually all of the powerups are useful for something other than being a key.
  19. Games giveaway

Is there a steam coupon bot like that dota2 invite bot? It seems like everyone always has coupons sitting around and they never find their way to people who want them.
  20. The threat of Big Dog

"It is the eighth robotics company that Google has acquired in the last half-year."
  21. Key Features

It makes my life better just knowing that is the name of an actual video game.
  22. Yes! This game is amazing! It has a feature that I'm suprised I haven't seen anywhere else where it automatically records sounds from your computer mic and saves them with the replays. Seriously, everyone should play this, it's great.
  23. DOTA 2

I was about to make literally that exact post. I am cool and original. I still kind of don't understand earth spirit. Like, I read his abilities, and I get what they do individually, but what are you actually supposed to do with them?
  24. Licenses That Demand A Game

I think a Telltale-style Twin Peaks game would be rad. That seems like it would work, right?
  25. San Francisco Residents!

Did they not set that up until the end? Because I didn't see it, and I really want to play that game. Also, I spent most of my time there milling around and not talking to anyone because I am terrible and don't know how to social.
