  1. Kentucky Route Zero

Silly question, but does any info carry between chapters? I built a new computer, and moved since I last played.
  2. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

There is no way that a store specializing in asian animated imports isn't leaning heavily on the plastic butts crowd, so this can only represent a temporary zeitgeist bump, rather than some oversight by the company. also, co-signing fingus's (fingusi?) post.

To a point, the publishers need to do something right? If they want publications to adhere to review embargoes than they need to take some kind of action against publications that don't play along, if the leaked marketing stuff was set to be released to other people at different times. I think there is a real problem with the press functioning as a defacto marketing arm, and I wonder if we wouldn't be better off if there weren't embargoes. Let the people rush reviews to market, and let people develop real taste for writers who's opinion they value? That's what movies do, basically, right?
  4. Idle Thumbs 237: Momazon Prime

a fitting tribute to motorhead on what seems to be their last legs
  5. I don't see what everyone sees in that movie ...

I'm not going to say anybody has bad taste, but unless you're setting up some HOT TAKES I think just straight up dismissing long time hailed classics is a mistake and it's really incumbent on the person to engage with these classics. If the response is just "i'm bored" I would first engage that feeling. I think a negative can might be made about Taxi Driver being a kind of blueprint for modern white rage in a way that it was no way intended to be (or that could have been anticipated). Scorsese doesn't position Bickle to be a hero though, and I don't think the movie is at all sympathetic to his plight. Also, it remains pretty amazing if only as a portrait of a New York that stopped existing so long ago.
  6. S.T.A.L.K.E.R : Call of Chernobyl

oh my goodness. i really need to invent more hours in a day to get into stalker mods.
  7. Project Eternity, Obsidian's Isometric Fantasy RPG

Yeah, I've used the enchant a lot, like mikemarino to update items that have a stat I really like, like the 2 sets of armor with "second chance" (free revive if knocked out), or anything that resists charming. That is the hardest part of some of the hard fights. The 10 vampires in raedric's hold, etc... I also used the stat enchant to try and keep different armors for dialog situations.
  8. Guild Wars 2

SO how are we all doing? I unlocked Scrapper with the point change. I dig it a lot. I don't quite know how I'm speccing it though. I have an exotic cele set, but all my ascended armor/jewelry/infusion stuff is Berserker, and everything is tearing me apart. I moved all 5 of my alts to the itzal village that has 7 flax nodes under it to start working on Nightfury. I had like ONE TINY moment of foresight in my whole game history and bought the bat potion when it was only 60g. i thought about buying more, but i've been burned by that speculation before. I haven't gotten through verdant brink yet, because i'm taking a class away from home and playing on a Surface Pro 2.
  9. HOWL O'WEEN (Halloween)

A buddy of mine made some ill mixes for Halloween the past few years that people might dig on. Solid party tracks! Mostly italian analog synth horror and sci-fi soundtrack deep cuts from the 70s and 80s, but the last one is strictly direct to vhs junk. All bangers. https://soundcloud.com/ryanmtodd
  10. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Buzzfeed and Vox both pulled out unless the Harper panel was reinstated which is cool, though Harper I believe urged them to stay in and speak out. I generally feel pretty positive about this shitty situation. The reaction has seemed unambiguously strong.
  11. Idle Thumbs 233: World of Blanks

I love the term "physics hell" unrelated but also "for Spelunky fans who can't find a vein." That should be a box quote.
  12. Guild Wars 2

oh man, we're all engis! i knew this forum was smart. I did most of the achieves with LFG. i bet it would have been easier solo at times, haha. The new legendary pistol looks nuts. i did a grunt work for a new legendary (mastery/77 clovers for fortune), then of course found out they won't need those gifts. i like juggernaut but i want to see what the new hammer looks like. my main alts are a war and guard so that works well. maybe i'll use my banked stuff for a funny one like Moot or Meteorologicus. i wonder if old precursor prices are going to spike or tank?
  13. Guild Wars 2

in a fit of life avoiding panic i finished my bioluminescent set this weekend. actually felt pretty good, and getting an ascended armor box is a nice perk. the only part that was really troublesome was the sand wall challenge mote, because those damn elementals reflect projectiles meaning my engi could only use the flamethrower.
  14. mortgages are out, immunosuppressant pills are in.
  15. Day One Perch! At this point I feel like price is an expression of how much you want to support a group of creators (crossed with personal means, no judgement!). Almost all games cost $4.99 or $9.99 by major holidays, and show me the person who doesn't have enough computer games to last them 4-6 months!
  16. Books, books, books...

That is awesome. Well deserved. I really want to read The Fisherman
  17. You just need to find the local equivalent like DownUndies.com
  18. I've got to be video game forum guy and agree with Jake totally. I'm also of a certain age, and really hit my game stride during 90s PC Gaming. (Is 90s PC Gaming officially a concept?) So I wasn't blown away by the introduction of 3D, and thought M64 was garish in its colors, the forced joy, and stars, and his accent. This caused some rift between me and my roomate at college! At the time I was really into the Treasure games console wise, and thought that M64 really lost all the charm of the sprite art. I also maintained for a long time that nobody would be nostalgic for the early days of 3D, (that segment in Metal Gear Solid 4 hen you flashback to MGS1 is such a small blocky nightmare) and that gameplay wise the very late 90s and early 2000s would be sort of a lost generation (does nobody love MAKEN X?). I think that is partially true, but "low poly" emerged as a viable aesthetic, and has been deployed in a lot of stylistic ways. I'm not sure that qualifies though, because I think modern pixel art stuff is faithful to the "tenents" of original pixel art in a way that low poly isn't.
  19. Plug your shit

Ill stuff SG! Sweet use of the desert chrome. NS, I'll read it as well, if you need more eyes!
  20. Guild Wars 2

You can easily join! There isn't really a gear treadmill. it's more about stuff you think looks good. gear power: blue, green, yellow (rare), orange (exotic), pink/purple (ascended / legendary). exotic is the functional cap for most people, and when they patch in new content/events the gear is always rare or exotic, and you just want it for the appearance, which you can paste over your regular gear. getting the pinks can be a lot of work, or something to work on in your down time, and the cost is pretty high for what amounts to 5% stat gain. like an exotic chestpiece would cost you ~2.5 gold, but the ascended would be like 150, plus you'd need to crafting pre-req that is pretty expensive at first. like merus said, the game is also structure where people are always in the low level zones.
  21. Man, listening to this today was sort of wild, as I was on a plane relocating from NY to TX. You brought an awesome, hilarious energy to the show! Hope things are fantastic in NY. Having briefly lived in SF, and most of life in NY I feel like NY is a few points easier. It can still be a grind, and the D-bags are richer, but the margins never seemed as tight. Looking forward to the new podz.
  22. Life

Valorian, Have you cold called every agency in your vicinity? I know a few designers who have found work that way, both freelance or temp to perm. A lot of those places are constantly hiring and rarely advertising, because they always need a full and rotating stable of designers.
  23. Idle Thumbs 229: Sneaking for Carl

The way I've felt about Metal Gear Solid stuff and my admittedly limited (but non-zero) experience with a fair bit of genre-fiction anime is that it's "busy but shallow". There is a lot of detail, but not a lot of depth. I sort of think of it as young adult literature. MGS is totally remarkable for how long winded it is without saying much. MGS3 for me is the most successful, because of The Boss' actually relatable sacrifice at the end that makes it actually work and have some emotional resonance that is both relatable, but not explicitly stated. It's super hard to say this without sounding very judgmental, so first let me say 1 luv to all good peoples, and no judgement on loving what you love. I'll totally cop to enjoying a lot of television sci-fi, and my favorite games are the Black Isle, Origin Systems, and Obsidian school, so I'm not getting all highfalutin on yous. I feel like there is some elemental difference in the way you experience narrative through interaction, than just reading or watching. I feel even the games I love would land on the low end of middlebrow, but the act of interaction changes that. I always hold up Kentucky Route Zero as the best example of narrative sophistication in games, again not in the sense of "oh my, what high art" but effectively communicating a layered emotional experience.
  24. I Had A Random Thought...

So this is how the GOP is going to steal the election?
  25. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

    is that from The Onion?
