  1. Nextbox 1080: The Reckoning

$500 sounds like a decent price for the hardware you're getting, (and will have, unchanged, for 5-7 years) no? People spent that and more on tablets, and the games stink!
  2. Nextbox 1080: The Reckoning

If I can take a moment of willful ignorance, you know your "announcing the fun new video game machine" thing isn't going well when the only result is protracted debates over the concept of ownership.
  3. Getting a phone

I'm using an HTC One, and I'm quite enjoying it. If you aren't using it heavily the battery is pretty good, the power saver is very effective. The galaxy nexus is a great phone, but if you're in a location with great high speed wireless, the nexus can't use it, 3G only.
  4. Double Fine - Kickstarter - MASSIVE CHALICE

I'm still at the point where I think kickstarter is a great way to support creators I believe in, who might be making less than perfectly commercial projects. I have enjoyed all the DF (and Obsidian) games, so I don't mind throwing down some cash to help them keep going. I can pretend I'm some Victorian era patron.
  5. Idle Thumbs 108: A Premium Price

I didn't check it in time, what happened at giantbomb.net before it simply redirects?
  6. Favorite Game Of All Time

Ultima 7. I grew up on adventure games, but U7 was the first to feel like I was in a world of infinite possibilites.
  7. Feminism

If I have any criticism it is that I wish the examples used in the final video were a bit more consistently mainstream or large titles. Bioshock Infinite, and Far Cry 3 are both emblematic of the main trope, and were played by a huge number of people compared to relative obscurities like Grabbed By the Ghoulies, Inversion, or Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs The Soulless Army. I don't think this detracts, and including lesser title can demonstrate the ubiquity, but the bigger titles give a bit more heft.
  8. Feminism

Agreed, and also an illustration that popular media can reflect and reinforce mainstream attitudes. Also, pointing out that these things can affect isn't the same as saying "these things are making you do X." She also points out in the video that the developers aren't setting out to say horrible things about women out of hatred, but asking you the viewer to consider how these ubiquitous messages are deeply ingrained in our culture and how they can affect your thinking.
  9. Books, books, books...

Loom of Ruin by Sam McPheeters Fantastic first book from the singer of one of my favorite 90s hardcore bands, Born Against. Occasionally absurd, easy to read, Pynchonesque (with a bit of Delilo) black comedy (though that’s all synonymous isn’t it) conspiracy centering around Trang Yang, a man who due to a series of incidents can only feel rage, and the lengths Chevron will go to figure out why his 9 franchises are slightly more successful than all the rest. It's a funny caper that toes the line of post modern nihilism, but remains funny, and hot hateful.
  10. Idle Thumbs 107: GIANTBOMB.COM

I thought it was a pleasant change of pace to have somebody on the show that seemed to genuinely enjoy video games. jokes jokes!
  11. Idle Thumbs 107: GIANTBOMB.COM

How do I change the language in Metro? I'm a dummy. I find the de rigeur extreme cynicism around console launches sort of disheartening. Granted, I'm not looking for all this transmedia business, nor do i want stuff popping up over the stuff I'm watching, but a hardware upgrade is always useful. Also, $500 is basically what I spend on video cards every 2/3 years, so even if both consoles are just "pcs" they're pretty great value PCs! I guess I'm unclear what it is people want them to do.
  12. Games with dogs (pets)

Shadow Dancer, the more difficult sequel to Revenge of Shinobi. He had a big white dog that you could send to chomp on guards and prevent them from shooting.
  13. Nextbox 1080: The Reckoning

i'm a pc lifer, but there are a lot of people that can't afford that either in money or time. i'm pretty sure there is a pretty solid overlap between those people and used game buyers, but hey, where else you gonna step besides somebody throat?
  14. Dragon's Crown: Gaze past the giant witch tits

It would probably seem less funny after a decade or two of it, when it started affecting your work relationships, earning potential, how often people scream at you on the streets, etc...
  15. Idle Thumbs 106: Imagine the Man

It can be frustrating when all strategy is at the mercy of dice, where a bad roll negates anything you planned. I think it can also be a bit rough when there is no chaotic/random element, because it leads towards "solutions" for games, like the default Dominion box. The Tammany Hall jobs can get hilarious. In the last game we played, the chief of police traded between the same two players, who basically spent their terms arresting each other's immigrants.
  16. Dragon's Crown: Gaze past the giant witch tits

It might be the most absurd version, but it's the most absurd version of the most typical alienating thing. is giant sexy tits n ass even outlandish anymore? it's the default setting.
  17. Idle Thumbs 106: Imagine the Man

The deflated silence when Sean first mentions Dota as a comparison to Tammany Hall is SOLID GOLD. sidebar: I personally don't care what you dudes talk about, because it's the way you do it that is compelling.
  18. Metro: Last Light

For what it's worth "character, scripted and linear" are all things that I feel describe Metro 2033. I think the whole game is sort of an inversion of the Stalker world feel. Claustrophobic, and focused.
  19. Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel

I think "arrange your face" to myself a lot at work now.
  20. Idle Thumbs 105: XCOM Obama

Haha, same, but mostly in servicing of seeing all the stuff. I don't "devour" games like some people. I don't mind using collectibles to service a large world. Though I wouldn't have hunted down all those pigeons, that felt like busy work. I remember being shocked after finishing LA Noire, and at the end of the credits there was an announcement that I found 0/50 golden reels. "Wait, what golden reels?!" I thought. I had collected a significant amount of the unique cars too.
  21. The Idle Book Club 8: Cosmicomics

This is sort of banal, but the light years perfectly predicts the experience of using the internet, socially, particularly in the transmission/agony of wait sense. Am I experiencing it right now?!
  22. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

A video from Tony Mollina's, the singer of Oakland's hardest: CAGED ANIMAL solo lp Dissed and Dismissed. For fans of the Replacements, Weezer, or Bulldoze. Directed by Hannah from Grass Widow:
  23. GTA V

I think you meant "middle aged white guys, urban youth, and Jack Nicholson (or writers of Jack Nicholson fan fiction)"
  24. Things That Improve Your Life

Yeah it's sweet! Seitan is surprisingly easy to make, though a little time consuming. The cost difference and volume yield of making your own versus buying West Soy boxes is shocking.
