  1. Idle Thumbs 284: Live From The Past

i love that pewdepie hated the end of Firewatch, and also said it was like the end of Lost which "didn't go anywhere." Gaming, as appreciation has a long way to go.
  2. Idle Thumbs 280: Hamburger Mode

It's beast mode for Burger Time XXXTREMRE,
  3. The Fast and the Furious series

Fast and Furious 3, 4, and 5 are way better than they have any right to be, but that's because Justin Lin is actually pretty good in a silly space. I loved the Vulgar Auteur articles that came out around 5. 1 is good as well. Also, my annual Nerd-a-thon (its 24th year) is two weeks, and I'm open to any recommendations of films I may not have seen that might delight, or repulse my pals. Last year I brought Hard to Be a God, Neil Breen's Fateful Findings, Korkusu aka Turkish Rambo. I'm looking particularly for any over the top violence of the kung fu/hong kong pistol opera kind, not the sadistic gore kind, unless it's a particularly nuts Tokyo Shock thing. The only thing I've got on that front is Killzone 2, which looks like the latest in a long line of Raid-a-likes.
  4. Idle Weekend September 10, 2016: 4K's Gone By

I had a very good August, so I finally upgraded my 10 year old LCD to an LG OLED, and it is quite nuts. The new XBOX One S comes with a 4k Blu Ray player that by most accounts is good, or at the very least like 100 less that comparable stand alone players. I agree were going to be in a weird middle ground for a long time, because the cost of 4k gaming will be far beyond what the console market will bear, which I think will be the same for VR.
  5. Idle Thumbs 278: Beef Chief

I think there is a version of the Deus Ex silliness that could have worked and been mechanically interesting. In China Mieville's Bas Lag books. "Augmented" are called "remade" and it's a brutal prison sentences foisted on the poor, turning them into living tools. So basically the story should be that oligarchs sponsor augmenting in their capitalist war with each other. The hackers are in debt to them, but it's the only way for the desperate to get work, and society hates them. So the player is constantly scrambling to pay for his/her AUGZ. In the Satellite Reign 3MA, they talked about too much modern cyberpunk ignoring the political component of the genre. This sounds like more of that.
  6. Paragon (lane pusher)

I bought an EVGA 1080, so I think I get a free copy. I'm not typically a LOMA person
  7. Idle Thumbs 277: Coming Attractions

Years ago a friend and I went to see The Minus Man, based on a cool trailer, which was original scenes of people talking about the movie, which I didn't realize at the time, and left feeling a little baffled
  8. Idle Weekend August 27, 2016: Sci-Fi's Sky

Something I kept thinking about during the NMS/sci-fi discussion was the first Mass Effect, and its generally empty planets. Sure the same structure maps could get tedious, but there was something I liked about the prefabs in aggregate. It made a (probably unintentional) kind of sense that there would be a few basic drop units companies would use, particularly for planets with very limited resource diversity.(which itself seems like a design shortfall that makes a kind of narrative sense)
  9. I get the dopiest version of that in RPGs, where I keep reloading to check conversation paths to decide my ideal path, and then I never play them a second time.
  10. The Idle Book Club 18: Runaway

I love them as snapshots of time, but all the same each one seems to live squarely in the center of "waiting for the other shoe to drop" and it makes me anxious since, like Greg mentioned, the format sort of restricts the stories to just that space.
  11. Idle Thumbs 275: The Robot's Lips

there must be something in vomiting that has a high "emotional" threshold that is remarkable to characters, because Gita Jackson said a similar thing on 3MA, her colonists artist is beautiful but spiteful and only creates sculptures of instances where people vomited. in a friend's game he said there have been many epic happenings, but the sculpture only recalls times people reacted to other people or animals puke. of course this opens the door for a future patch note of "vomiting takes less of a psychic toll on colonists"
  12. i also agree that ME3 gets a slightly worse rap than needed. though i also agree that the main beef, the final choice and the singular outcome is exactly as sad as everyone said. for worlds: ULTIMA. This one is something else, since 7 games took place in the exact same world, with the same playable companions, that only grew a bit over time. i like that they didn't add landmass, but evolved the fidelity of same cities over time, including some historical facts that might elevate one city in particular, such as gargoyles being "just monsters" in early games, to subject of segregation narratives, to another race (still with some problems) living in cities . They also include a central conceit that the player is the same person from another dimension who's returns can be decades apart.
  13. Movie/TV recommendations

as a fan of over the top action movies, i thought this totally earned it's conceit. constant escalation right to the end, and a few moments of charm, mostly through his friend, my fiance almost blasted a puke once or twice, so i'll cosign the motion warning.
  14. Idle Thumbs 271: Cool Blob Future

Since they're being sued for facilitating teenage gambling they probably received strict lawyerly instructions to not admit that when they fix it.
  15. HELP: Attempted upgrade of PC gone wrong

Yay! Few things are more annoying than the doubt laced mystery of unworking computer parts, but it's SO satisfying when that new thing boots up.
  16. what is the mechanism that makes the gun skins "rare" does the creator dictate how many can be released? does some valve CSR look and say "wow, this is fancy, only 100 in circulation." or is it just raw luck?
  17. idlethumbs.casino where players bet on whether nick can beat a dark souls boss and the internalization meter effects the odds.
  18. HELP: Attempted upgrade of PC gone wrong

i just remembered another real low level troubleshooting thing i ran into with my last build. make sure you're not over tightening things. i think when i first got the liquid CPU cooler, i screwed it down a few turns too much, and it was distorting/slightly messing up the socket connection.
  19. HELP: Attempted upgrade of PC gone wrong

can you plug the RAM into your old machine to verify that they work? also, assuming you're using one of those newer modular PSUs, you've got the right amount plugs connected to the mobo right? sorry if that sounds insulting, but i think i made a similar mistake once.
  20. The Next President

if i were a betting man, i'd still honestly put my money on trump not making the full run. his brand is WINNING, and there is no value in such a high profile loss, and he is well on his way to losing. he can just say "the gop is rigged and not supporting me so i can't do it" and walk away. fun backup point: there were some articles recently that said despite trump's words his campaign hasn't filed any of the paperwork required to actually forgive the loans he made to his campaign. meaning he can use the donations he's raising to pay them back, until august. convention in mid july. also, i love that he directly solicited both non-us citizens and foreign officials, both illegal.
  21. Idle Thumbs 266: Memeify McCree

Idle Thumbs 292: "Age Wars and Hedge Letter" or "The Good Far Cry 2"
  22. i recognize i have a certain privilege in being able to do it, but I feel like $600 every 2 years isn't really bad as minimum hobby buy in goes. it's less than my gym, or spending $20 a week on eating/drinking out. i'm pretty much full time pc now, and rob nailed my preference for it. i think there is a ton of value for that money. throw in a steam link and you've got both a solid console experience, and backward compatibility with a lot of early games if you don't mind some low level illegality.
  23. The Next President

A lot of people put a lot of time, heart, and money into Sanders campaign and he's not technically eliminated yet, so why not run out the clock? He has a right to his platform. Clinton did the exact same thing in 08, staying in through the final primaries, and a few days after the super delegates publicly declared for Obama giving him the lock. He was looking competitive in CA, and from what I've read it can take a few days to tally the final outcome of that state. Not that he'll flip it, but it didn't look like he was sunk before they voted.
  24. haha, wow, i stand corrected! even weirder!
  25. I just wanted to add that on a the subject of all the Witcher games, and relative jankiness of #1 (which i love) I think it's worth mentioning (though as game professionals i assume you know) that it's basically a total conversion of Neverwinter Nights 2, as they licensed the engine, and ran into certain limitations, like that the people were designed click-to-move rather than action WASD.
