  1. General Video Game Deals Thread

the best year was when they offered raffle ticket for completing in game challenges. i definitely bought a few $1.50/$2.50 games just to complete a daily ticket meta. i also finished one badge, but there were 100 levels of it! that would be expensive. final damage report: Rocksmith 2014 Ben There, Dan That & Time Gentlemen Please Brothers Dust An Elysian Tale Bioshock Season Pass VVVVVV Bulletstorm Trine 2 Complete Story Upgrade (don't even know what this is, but it was .49) $55.18
  2. Plug your shit

Oh god. This irony is probably the dream of a fair amount of big time publishers.
  3. Idle Thumbs 139: Happy News Year

what is the chinese oil portrait place?! a google search turns up a bunch of pages seemingly designed in 2003.

amazing! How will you feel is this catches on?
  5. General Video Game Deals Thread

Infinite won the vote, and unlike the daily deals, this time the DLC is 75% off. Don't sleep! (again, in my case).
  6. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

If you're into Weezer I'd strongly recommend checking out Tony Molina, a Bay Area cool dude. Replacements, Fastbacks, Weezer is the jump off, but it goes a lot of directions, and all the songs are like 1:30, so it's no big commitment. http://vimeo.com/64242592 This one has some deep Thin Lizzy vibes:

Guacamelee - Finished with all the mask pieces. Great fun! It seemed light and breezy at first, but the mask challenges, and the Devil's Office got quite challenging towards the end. I loved the ending graphic of El Presidente's Daughter yelling at the chicken giving her a red card.
  8. You Have One of Three Wishes

I'd be so much better off if I didn't need any sleep.

I can't help but see the ol' art vs commerce part of the original blog post. The Oscar and Grammys don't really represent a serious cultural critical perspective in giving their awards either. I also agree with Jon about a lack of critical authority as well. For a medium as big as games I'm surprised we don't have an Ebert yet, though I think that might be due to a general lacking of terms to weigh quality. GH is wonderful in it's use of the medium to deliver narration, and it's ludic qualities support the narrative very well, but I can understand people also wanting a bit more active engagement.
  10. Guacamelee

I also grabbed this in the sale and have been having a lot of fun with it. These games just trigger some primal game endorphins in me or something, as i logged way too many hours this weekend getting the hidden mask pieces. There is some Limbo language in the church if you can get up to the belfry, and a Journey guy right before the final boss!

There is a ME collection of all games and all DLC, for all systems, just not on Steam. Boy do I love New Vegas, and even more so the 4 DLCs, significantly more than F3, though I've also really enjoyed all of Obsidian's games, warts and all. My favorite stuff is always warty, it's a sign of ambition! I thought NV also built nicely on the first two games, FOR THE FANS.

Did you ever think that maybe the robots were spoofing the readers' email to goad and taunt the team?
  13. It's beginning to look a lot like...

Every year some friends and I put up this ridiculous tree, a collection of delightfully hideous garbage. It started when we were teenagers when his mom banished some Star Wars ornament in the name of not wanting "a war on her tree", so he found some ancient fake and set it up in the basement. Also banished were particularly low quality ornaments of commercial or school project origins, as well as busted strands of garland most likely made entirely of asbestos. For about 7 years we made a new ornament to try and commemorate some major years event, such as one friend's way too late in life first kiss, which you can see to the bottom right.
  14. I've been re-watching the movies on blu-ray with some friends, and man, all the TNG movies are really bad. They just kind of step on everything the show got right, turning Picard from a conscientious man who believes everything has a right to exist, to a space gatlin toting dune buggy off roading enthusiast. People may laugh, but of them, I think Generations is the best one, even though it has some real editing issues, like when it looks like Picard chooses to be stuck under a rock.
  15. Movie/TV recommendations

Yeah, the first season of Fringe was kind a grim x-files rip with half the spirit, but it found it's place and eventually went to some really neat places. Anna Torv and John Noble are great. She starts off pretty wooden, but by the time she's playing two different versions of herself she gets nicely nuanced. I was kind of bummed that she seemed to be half written out during the final season. Also, I love that they actually made a Violet Sedan Chair lp and hid copies in used record stores around the country.

I've kept it tight so far. They only got me for: Bulletstorm: 4.99 Rocksmith 2014: 40 I'm holding out for a Starbound deal.
  17. I'm Going to Make a Game

I would recommend Ben There, Dan That for sure! Fun and funny game, and if you're messing with AGS, it's a neat example of having a second character follow the main one.
  18. Idle Thumbs 138: A Christmas Blast

re: Inside Llewyn Davis, my girlfriend thought 'Hey Mr Kennedy' was a reference to 'Hey, Hey LBJ': A certain care for fidelity was one of the things that kept LA Noire working for me, though video games seem to bump into a different problem than film/tv in that if you render a Chevy there are some licensing issues, where TV people just black out the logos.
  19. The Stanley Parable

It is. Not the wrong game, that is. -The Narrator http://cloud-4.steampowered.com/ugc/488937589274606625/553AECA8A69244888017F9F17E7B04FF968A90FF/

Another fun thing: under the stairs to the basement is Lonnie's letter to Sam with the cat on the motorcycle.
  21. Idle Thumbs 138: A Christmas Blast

Happy Holidays thumbs! Thanks for another year of good times!
  22. Broken Age - Double Fine Adventure!

I'm kind of behind on the documentary part, and I don't personally care about delays, beside the all these additional documentary clips that we wouldn't have if the game came out sooner. Is 2PP just like some weird in house wing of DF now? I'm sure it's gone on longer than they planned. I hope they didn't contract a flat fee for the whole project, HAR HAR.
  23. General Video Game Deals Thread

Yeah, the SP includes Clouds, and BaS 1 & 2. a fair deal at 19.99 I guess, but still. crud.
  24. General Video Game Deals Thread

Crud! Bioshock Infinite Season pass was $5 when the sale started, and I waited. I guess it was a mistake and it's now full price again. Never wait! Always impulse buy!
  25. Idle Thumbs 137: Data Complete

I think Jake sold me on Starbound. I totally respect the procedural free for all games, but something about the intersection of of that technology with authored purpose is really what I'm looking for. I'll remain curious about the first game that can procedurally generate some narrative.
