I too am in total agreement with Gormongous about the difference between journalism & dev eras, as to what takes up the hosts' mental real estate and great value of Jr Mintz. Sidebar: when Shawn Elliot was on, not too long ago, he told a funny sex story.

Idle Thumbs 163: A B C D E3

i'm sort of out of the whole screaming on youtube scene, but is that like FOR REAL?! -
i don't absolve myself! EDIT! It was pointed out to me that this might read as I'm implying that everyone posting is men, which I didn't mean. I meant, that the men involved should monitor the space they take up. I apologize both speaking poorly, and at this point doing the thing I'm talking about. That dude is playing some bad idea bingo. "these women are free to choose to jiggle!"

i really don't want to seem like i'm shutting down or stifling discussion, but just suggesting that we be careful when we, as a bunch of dudes, steer a conversation from "some sexist game developer's tantrum about a reporter not celebrating his panty shots" to "the true meaning of fan service." 1 luv to all. EDIT! It was pointed out to me that this might read as I'm implying that everyone posting is men, which I didn't mean. I meant, that the men involved should monitor the space they take up. I apologize both speaking poorly, and at this point doing the thing I'm talking about.

Far Cry 4: A grenade rolls down everest

Haha, yeah, I think the GAME of FC3 is pretty great, it's parts of the narrative that are groany. Also, as much as it's part of the core FC2 experience the enemy camp respawn rate was fro me was a bit on the wrong side of overbearing, where FC3 didn't respawn enough. -
yeah, i'll acknowledge i can do it too, but we should try to be aware when we're a bunch of dudes steering a conversation into easier/personally interesting territory.

Give it a little time, he'll be called in to execute studio notes! Also, re-Tom Cruise.

Imagining romantic relationships between fictional characters based on clues and supposition that isn't supported or like, true, in an existing narrative. Mulder & Scully as a couple is basically the first example, and probably played a part in ruining that show, like god, can't a man and woman have a sweet professional relationship?

I have vivid memories of installing quest for glory 4 from 9 floppies, though I guess HQ1 was on 10. Edit: I cheated and googled, but Beneath a Steel Sky was 15 x 3.5"s -
Yeah, Rian is the first thing that sparked a little interest for me in Star Wars. Abrams and Lindelof are the worlds luckiest hacks.

Not to possibly further derail, but i think "shipping" started with the X-Files, though I think you can see "shipping" as a subset of fan service. Possibly gender driven? I find "shipping" particularly distasteful. Fan Service while also pretty icky, is in most concept describing something in situ. Technically any nudity could fit the bill, but shipping gives the viewers fantasy primacy, almost mandating a disregard for the existing narrative.

haha, holy crap! why is everything so weird?! also, if i'm gaming this, i should probably reduce my want list to 3 items, right? or did they plan on that kind of nudnikery?

Star Citizen: it's hard to imagine that even with 45 million + X (split what, 8 ways?), we're not going to wind up like 4 different video games with a tunnel you drive through to connect them. also, Danielle is always great and fun on the cast! -
ok. i feel bad nickle and diming indie devs, but i also feel like a chump wasting money. 33% banner saga 10% transistor 20% divinity that's probably as low as those will go, right?

Yeah, there is a brothel and i think you can hire a patron if you want, but I don't remember anybody besides Triss who is sort of his girlfriend, even though nobody can tie Geralt down.

"Do you want to be told you're an idiot by people with a deeply vested interest in things that are extremely obscure which they've raised to clinically disturbing fetish, but also seem to lack a lot of basic, core education? Then I have the opt in harassment tool for you!"

i think i post this every sale, but i wish their sales would go back to being little interactive events. i think xmas 2011 or 12, they had a raffle for every game, and you could get tickets for completing daily challenges, usually involving games that were on sale that day. I totally bought a few $2.00 and less games to finish the meta badge.

Most of these are reposts from Alternet, Tom's Dispatch, etc... http://www.salon.com/2014/03/28/4_shocking_examples_of_police_militarization_in_americas_small_towns_partner/ edit: better sample quote! A town with a murder count of two since 2009, Keene’s city officials surreptitiously accepted a $285,933 grant from the Department of Defense in 2012 to purchase a Ballistic Engineered Armored Response Counter Attack Truck, or BearCat. http://www.salon.com/2013/07/13/radley_balko_once_a_town_gets_a_swat_team_you_want_to_use_it/ There are several levels of militarization. The rise of SWAT teams nationwide, the number of annual SWAT deployments in the U.S., has gone from a few hundred in the ’70s, to 30,000 per year in the early ’80s, to 50,000 in 2005. That’s 100, 150 times a day in this country you have these heavily armed police teams breaking into homes, and the vast majority of times it’s to enforce laws against consensual crimes. http://www.salon.com/2014/01/28/%E2%80%9Cwe_called_for_help_and_they_killed_our_son%E2%80%9D_out_of_control_police_overreach_meets_extreme_secrecy/ If it seems to you that the police are becoming more violent, you may be right. In 2011, Los Angeles County police shot to death 54 people, some 70 percent more than in 2010. Between 2008 and 2013, the number of people shot by Massachusetts police increased every year. In 2012, police in New York City shot and killed 16 people, nine more the previous year and the most in 12 years. In 2012, Philadelphia police shot 52 people—the highest number in 10 years. about the cost in austerity obsessed anti-government times: http://www.salon.com/2014/04/11/obscenely_high_police_salaries_wheres_the_political_outrage/ Consider the even more egregious case of Desert Hot Springs, Calif., a city of 27,000 profiled by the New York Times in December because of the shocking disconnect between the economic fortunes of its residents and the 39 members of its police force. The poverty rate in Desert Hot Springs is nearly 30 percent. The median household income, as of 2011, was $31,356 — while the average compensation package (including salary and benefits) for a police officer was $177,203. As the city careened toward bankruptcy, 66 percent of the $10.6 million budget signed into law in the spring of 2013 was appropriated for the police.

Burial at Sea pt 2: I didn't realize that BS:I was a prequel to BS. Har har. I really enjoyed to light stealth and the return to rapture. I 1998'd it. Some really amazing sequences, particularly the intro. The whole thing consistently looks and sounds so good. I thought the attempt to recontextualize Daisy was a little silly, and I forgot enough about BS:I that I'm not sure why the retcon Daisy needed to get Elizabeth ready to kill in the first place? In another sense I feel like the fatalistic death march and fingerprints of Irrational's closing is all over this. "This is all for nothing, but we have to do it anyway." I'm sure everyone is tired of talking about this. I kept thinking that Sally was supposed to be another Elizabeth.

If you guys are in Europe it might be hard to see how in the U.S. things have fundamentally changed over the past 13 years. The idea of cops as this heavily armed and armored civilian military is new, and it has made them a more deadly force than police were 25 years ago. Bad Boys is 1995, and while people of color have always been harassed by the police, it has only grown more deadly and oppressive. For most of the past 10 years the New York police policy was that they could stop and frisk a person for "looking suspicious." You can guess who got to experience that. I could be on board with a sort of insane fictionalized version of ultra cops n robbers. Same for military stuff, though I do find the modern "realistic" glorifying military shooter to be unpleasant.

i want to go on record and state that i unequivocally enjoy fun.

I mentioned some of that in my post Cine! Also, to go a step further, if we're talking about actual criminal behavior, more innocent money has been stolen and blown up by the banks than by theft. In Colorado, legal pot growers can't get bank accounts out of the banks stated fear of prosecution in a future regime change, but HSBC has ADMITTED (and paid 2 billion in fines) to willingly laundering billions of narco cartel money. In my fantasy version of the game the robbers say "we're going to stick it to these rich fucks" and the cops say the same thing and steal the money as well, just more cynically.
