  1. Ferguson

With recent supreme court decisions regard corporate money and speech, and I'm baffled (not really baffled) that FREE SPEECH ZONES for reporters has been run up the chain.
  2. I agree with this! That your choice of dialog doesn't seem to impact much makes KRZ feel so good, and weirdly makes the story more personal. It's more an expression of your feeling than a choice. I always talk to the dog, rather than just say "take it easy."
  3. Ferguson

Here is a misery statistic. SWAT teams are now used 137 a times a day, most often executing search warrants for drugs. So these aren't known criminals/hostage situations/active shooters, these are legally innocent people SUSPECTED of a nonviolent crime. SWAT door busts are used in 70% of warrant executions against non-whites and in 38% of white cases, despite drug usage being mostly equal across races.
  4. The Ethics of Battlefield: Hardline

I think you can make a fun version of this game, like if you made it some kind of "action movie" setup, like hong kong triads vs cops, or like some kind of 80s action nonsense, but when you're talking about "realistic militarized police" you can't ignore that realistically these police are killing unarmed people of color every day, most often while executing a search warrant for drugs.
  5. This is turning out to be as far from what I was expecting as possible.

Also, military funding is essentially sacrosanct in american politics, so there is almost always infinite money for it, and it is a huge business. The problem is that you need to use this stuff to justify buying more of it.
  7. Ferguson

It's almost inevitable when you an gear an already racist police force like an army, they view the citizens like enemy forces. I thought this captured that well, written by a Marine. http://www.businessinsider.com/police-militarization-ferguson-2014-8
  8. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

I think the $1,000 thing is a joke, since the 7" comes out next month!
  9. Feminism

It also ties in with the notion that a dominant force can't be the victim, like there really is no "misandry" or "reverse racism." The dominant structure retains its power, though it can choose to surrender it. Submissive men who seek doms choose that. They aren't objectified because its their desire that's being served.
  10. Feminism

A negative aspect of pornography is that dehumanizes women for an assumed male desire, and I think anime porn takes that to its extreme conclusion of situations you couldn't even expect a human to perform or survive. It renders explicit an implicit violent fantasy, and while I'm no expert "she says she doesn't want it, but learns to love it" seems to be a theme.
  11. Sierra is back.. sort of..

they later ones were schmatlzy Don Bluth cartoons, and then a hard right into Tomb Raider.
  12. Sierra is back.. sort of..

I get bummed when things get introduced totally divorced from their creators. There is something funny about this kind of super targeted nostalgia because Sierra had some real bad years at the end, with some bad blood before the plug was ultimately pulled on their remaining publishing shell. Also, I think every original Sierra creative lead is trying to kickstart their old game, so this must feel like salt in that wound to them.
  13. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

I'm pretty sure everything I've posted has gone over like a lead balloon, but if you dig on power pop/garagey stuff, these kids are the realest of deals! i predict big things! (tiny big things) http://sheermag.bandcamp.com/
  14. This guy chooses tornado. Who's choosing to go to cologne to get the HOT SCOOP? I always thought this kind of thing would be the best use of the WiiU screen.
  15. Ironically, this thread is well and truly ONLY on Idle Thumbs, unless one of you is doing something real weird.
  16. Why weird games are important.

I dig a lot of what's come out of the eastern block, STALKER was a real awakening, which granted isn't weird, but non-standard in a way that made me look to other regional game. Ice Pick Lodge games have delivered some delightful weirdness. Pathologic, The Void, and Cargo-The Quest for Gravity. They're all kind of janky.
  17. I've been meaning to get a new TLD for my portfolio without my cumbersome Italian last name. I was thinking Jeff.plumbing. People would remember that.
  18. Speaking of Chris Pratts' muscles, his routine was kind of crazy. 3 to 4 hours daily and at least 4000 calories consumed. Workout below! There is just like a casual 50 bench presses at my max.
  19. Books, books, books...

The Lynch one is amazing, but I think my favorite one is on TV, which is amazingly predictive but also one of his first forays into a kind of anti-irony, which I really love. The Fogle chapter is also about his wasting time at college, and the various substances they took, when he stumbles into the last day of an accounting class and is forever moved to join the IRS.
  20. Books, books, books...

Yes! I loved that, and basically any Leonard Steyck or David Cusk sweat sections, they made me uneasy. Though looking back, I misattributed the Ozymandias section (if i'm remembering correctly here) (the story of the kid with the divorced parents who's mother leaves for another woman) to being a David Wallace story, because it's told first person as the DW sections, but it isn't, it's Chris Fogle. Man, what's wrong with me?
  21. I don't doubt quality and thorough research was done, as you dudes are thoughtful, but I would really recommend the book I mentioned before The Big Burn: Teddy Roosevelt and the Fire that Saved America. It's about the creation of the national parks, and forestry service, through the narrative of the people who tried to protect what they considered American's birthright, and the huge fire that eventually consumed much of it. The various psychology of the people who flocked to the early west would also be useful, as some were hard working, the first foresters were all from the Yale school established for forestry, but many were desperate or criminal, and towns were grim. Taft, Montana had 1 prostitute for ever 5 people. I learned about a "paloosa" and Native term for a wind that tore through western Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana, in the context at 80mph carrying pure flame and debris.
  22. Books, books, books...

The Pale King -David Foster Wallace. Interesting! When I heard it was unfinished my mind took it too literally, as if it was written in a straight line, and he killed himself at the 80% mark. These 550 or so pages can only represent what I imagine was 30-50% of what would have been the final thing. It's sort of amazing. There are some really powerful scenes and characters, but a single narrative never emerges, and obviously nothing is quite resolved. That nebulous quality adds its own interest, and a theme of boredom and despair runs throughout. Tragic, but in that way strangely fitting.
  23. Idle Thumbs 169: On Blade

Oh man, if it's Loudmouth Spout Off time: I don't think it's particularly weird, and I don't expect the crew to have to personally vouch for any product. That's a little onerous to expect these people to take some personal responsibility for a handful of products outside their normal purview. Obviously they can bring a more tangible enthusiasm to things they use and truly endorse. I'm sure we have all disagreed with the hosts opinions on games before, so their liking or not liking something shouldn't automatically preclude your interest. I know they will exercise the obvious due diligence of "no hateful material" or what have you.
  24. Sweet! Also, I'm currently reading The Big Burn, about Teddy Roosevelt establishing national parks, and starting the forest service, and John Muir figures prominently into that! I definitely didn't get that when I played Sam & Max back in the day. Related: It's always a wild reminder that this country has been having the same argument for over 100 years.
  25. Beyond Good and Evil 2

as long as ancel can retain the original spirit FarCry 3 & AssCree are great engines to build G&E 2 off of.
