  1. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I will bet that the sad lesson taken from this is that future ratfucking will need to be done in secret/private channels, so people will really need to be extra vigilant about future claims.
  2. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Yeah, unwanted attention must be unfun.
  3. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

    Legend status confirmed.
  4. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Oh, gross! I am not interested in striving to undo the damage that a political movement has done to itself. I think I shall watch Captain Picard again instead. Good god. Yeah, Picard had a real low tolerance for progressive/dissenting opinions (in the tv show).
  5. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

no fair! they're using our dumb words to say we're stupid! also, I could be wrong, but that escapist statement looks like sarcasm to me.

  7. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

As a pal of mine pointed out, there was a disney rep on stage for the PAX Bombcast throwing out free infinity swag. Have people been talking about that? What's different about the Bombcast? I'd like to think I'm an optimist, and this is a weird way to look at things, but I really believe "we're winning." The harassment is vile, and best stomped out, but in this instance it is a negative side effect of success, and increased visibility. Anita has more viewers/supporters than shitty tweeters, not to mitigate the scary quality of those assholes.

Nice. Lets see how strongly people feel about #GameGhazi when they have to attach their actual names and reputations to this.
  9. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

can we forcibly change the name of this from #gamergate to #gamerbenghazi?
  10. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

The insane thing here is there is actually reason to be skeptical in those instances. It's pretty well documented that both parties use access to executive branch to leverage the kind of stories they want, and reporters who don't play ball get locked out. Not that that would preclude good investigative work, but there is an obvious profit motive, and ease of the other way. I don't doubt this happens in games as well, but the thing people don't seem to connect is that it is about who has money and power. I guarantee that access and "exclusive first looks" is leveraged by bigger publishers. But strangely enough, this rage is targeted at women.

I guess video games are officially the new front of America's cultural revolution where we start purging the intellectuals. I don't believe in conspiracy, but I think this is deliberate in it's attempt to prevent women and allies from writing about other women. Also, like Gorm, I just have the same thoughts over and over. That if merely knowing or believing in the work of a friend is a sign of corruption the picture that paints of these people's lives is BLEAK.

Let me volley this back with something we talked about briefly earlier on. You know what was far more prevalent than violent sexual assault and brothels? Catholicism. The Vatican is still basically its own country. They controlled almost every major decision because everybody was DEEPLY religious. The church could and did burn people to death with impunity for suggesting the church be less wealthy. The Pope had a significant say in foreign affairs, and who the nobility could marry. This doesn't get carried over to most fantasy. Why is it easier to accept all the sex? (Spoiler: It serves the predisposition of the assumed audience)

ok, so he is the first credible false flag i can think of.

If you have been a part of this community I honestly don't know how you've missed this part: Men and women, as well as different races have fundamentally different experiences. Things that happen to women, don't happen the same way to men. This is a tiny pivot, but when talking about Ferguson Sean Hannity said "I don't know what the problem black people have with police is. When I get pulled over, I step out of the car, and lift my shirt to show the officer I have a gun, and everything is fine." You can understand how this experience is fundamentally different to a white person than if a black person, specifically Michael Brown tried it, right? There is NO general male analog to the sexualized violence that Red Dead presents to the random woman. Men outside of prison do not reasonably live under a threat of sexual violence. Women do. Any comparison you make, where those things are equal are totally specious and do not reflect reality. This is of the utmost importance for "both side" people to understand. EDIT: Also, if you honestly think Anita, or ANYBODY would "revel" in the kind of abuse she receives you really need to spend more time trying to understand the human condition, because you have a shocking lack of empathy and practical lived experience.

I also think TotalBiscuit's (who I honestly don't follow at all) take is full of nonsense and foolishness. Filed under nonsense: Internetaristocrat did the main video on this, a channel mostly dedicated to debunking SJW topics and complaining about how prevalent they are in todays media. A fair cause for the most part, though it's a fine line to walk at the best of times. Filed under nonsense and foolishness: Games journalism as a whole has a massive nepotism problem, encouraged by the publishers and developers and actively partaken in by many outlets. [snip] So much shit goes on behind the scenes, more than you could ever possibly know about. Ooh, conspiracy! More than who? Me or him? Does TotalBuscuit have the hot scoop on all these improprieties? He forgot to list them! Maybe he's working on his own Pentagon Papers? Filed under nonsense If Zoey Quinn did engage in censorship via the abuse of the DMCA on Youtube then I thoroughly condemn her actions as being both fucking stupid and unethical. If? Remember when he was talking about how crummy the press is? How about some confirmation? Asking somebody not to say something isn't censorship. I'm sure you've all noticed people have retained the freedom to say horrible things about and to this woman and her games, and many different companies leverage their digital rights all the time. If there WAS a DMCA violation, that would imply the law was on the side of the plaintiff. If there even was one, which we don't know.

Are the dragons and zombies and 5,000 foot high medieval structures historically accurate? Have you ever noticed how people tend to focus on the supposed historical accuracy of injustice in otherwise totally outlandish settings? Also, are you sure it's accurate? We have an actual medievalist posting here. We're talking about a made up fantasy land, but on earth, there were female rulers, and eras of enlightenment. There was no one way. If you're looking dark ages type stuff the society was deeply pious, with many decisions controlled by religious leaders, but that is rarely covered in many of the cartoon fantasies we're talking about.

Have you looked for it? The week after it occurred every major news site ran some kind of critical story on the rape scene. These aren't obscure tumblrs: http://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2014/apr/29/game-of-thrones-racism-sexism-rape http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2014/04/21/does-game-of-thrones-have-a-misogyny-problem/ http://www.avclub.com/article/rape-thrones-203499 Also, as somebody who likes some dumb/ignorant shit, it's also possible to be aware and critical of the things you like.

  23. It's funny, because didn't EA promise ALL their games were going to be built in the same proprietary engine? Then Ubi just slides it out there. whomp whomp!
  24. Down in the Zone (S.T.A.L.K.E.R.)

CoP is so much more polished, it's almost like you can see shifting design theory, and what the possibility space is. SoC's ending, particularly the rush into the reactor facility is just brutal, but largely systemic, but the end of CoP is more scripted.

I don't fully understand the Patreon aspect, as it seems like reverse situation of the kind of payola an ethics policy prevents. It seems very close to forbidding game journalists to buy the kind of games they want to support? Isn't covering a game/or designer for a larger site essentially the same motivation? Getting the word out about something you believe is important or worthy of attention. Also, while I fully understand that two things can be wrong at the same time, are these ethics enthusiasts familiar with the way our government has been interacting with the press that covers them over the past 20 years? How the nature of that access has shaped what wars the United States have started?
