I played an hour or so of the beta, just to get a feel, and I'm pretty sure I'll be into it, but I have to finish Divinity first! Also, I'm going to wait for my big box to arrive + day 1 bug squashes.

Cool cool. Danielle is so ill. I think when faced with these equally imperfect choices I favor "not sanitizing." Even the "free youtube" version isn't really free, they're getting that advertising money, and you've shifted the value to google as the host. It's easy to recognize older, agreed upon problems and say "they shouldn't be selling this" but we can do the same, almost equally for modern works. TV & Film, broadly, is still thoroughly racist, it's just that our understanding of racist attitudes have shifted from the most obvious "shucking and jiving" to representation and opportunity. -
I brought up the reading more than YA fiction thing, but I also extend that all creative works, and said that I think it's important to challenge yourself from time to time. I think exclusively is my operative word. A lot of important creative works aren't easy, but pursuing the enjoyment of them gives you perspective to appreciate everything else. Like a Rashomon joke on the Simpsons. I don't want to dive too deep into the mechanics of metaphor, but while there is nothing wrong with eating chocolate, if you told me you choose between only eating chocolate and eating nothing, I would say they are both bad choices. Also, ascetics, if we're talking ascetics in religious terms, they're embarked on some deeply challenging endeavors!

the idea of you photographing a chevy volt, featuring an xbox one license plate, with your 3DS is a pretty great encapsulation of this epoch. give it a "hang in there" banner.

The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS

the comparisons are funny, but there is no perspective there! As far as I know Twitch isn't making any money, so it's going to be a minute before amazon starts recouping that, and Instagram doesn't even have a system to make money. Oculus might, but it's going to take a lot. If MS does nothing, MC will recoup in ~6 years. The one thing they have in common is that they are plays for user bases, and MS just got multiple generations of the youngest. Also, it was a purchase made almost entirely in cash that is parked overseas to avoid taxation, which MS couldn't exactly bring back into the country, and can't be used within the U.S. -
Well, not more than not at all, but I don't think it's a simple dichotomy! I'm also thinking across other experiences as well, like the first thing I thought of was The Birthday Party, who's best record ironically has the trashiest of "low art" covers. Also, I wouldn't say inferior, but I would say "limiting." I mean, I've dumped hundreds of thousands of hours into video games, so I'm not riding exclusively the highest of horses.

I read those as a criticism of exclusively enjoying simple pleasures that demand little intellectual or emotional engagement of the consumer beyond a surface level reaction, like eating candy for every meal. I do believe it's infantilizing for adults to read YA exclusively.

Idle Thumbs 175: It's an Itchio

Though I bet Nguyen would write that Lebron really likes dunking, and people like when he dunks, which is similar to his approach to game design. -
A central point of Name of the Rose is about Monk's hoarding knowledge. How does the fury over translating the bible out of Latin fit in? Sidebar: I reject the idea of you like what you like! You need to occasionally challenge yourself to understand and find value in something difficult. There are plenty of things not immediately pleasing that are totally rewarding.

can we all agree that what we're really concerned about is the lack of a black on black shirt?

He's on the michael bay seaman drama The Last Ship. either way, diving into this muck is intensely uncool for somebody in the business of being cool!

i think it's smart. every kid is obsessed with it, so they're buying that mindshare, and it's already making like 350M+ a year. i bet they can scale that a bit. -
i was wondering what Adam Baldwin's stake in this was. It seems like a real cultural cache step down from TV acting to arguing game journalism on twitter? It makes sense that people are trying to tie a young angry demographic to right wing politics, except for the part where they already locked up the angry white vote.

This is melting my brain. Also, the purchase is almost entirely CASH. Notch could keep a billion, and still give the other 38 people ~35,000,000. -
This Minecraft thing is crushing my brain. If Notch keeps a BILLION for himself, he could easily just make the other 39 employees 25 millionaires.

is this a goddamn joke? a bunch of allegedly anonymous developers insist on game journalists disclosing all their finances? fuck off. ps. this post is actually the views of a consortium of over 65% of the living nasa astronauts, and camera people on cable ghost hunting shows.

One of those markers I find interesting is how people have represented children through eras. Victorian era paintings have children proportioned like small adults.

If I can return to a common theme, these people are dum-dums with no practical life experience. Their claims are either non-factual or just nonsense. Yesterday the big uproar was about ZQ "not donating" based on a sceenshot of a facebook post where a Breitbart reporter asked iFred if "depressionquest" donated money, basically phrased like that. the social media rep said "they didn't have a formal arrangement with 'depressionquest'" and people went nuts. It should be obvious to anybody that the donating party wouldn't be "depressionquest" and that the donations could come from a myriad other simple to deduce sources: physical check with any kind of name on it, money order with no identification, an email address of a paypal account that isn't the email address you think it is, etc... Second, RICO is a federal statute so THEY can't do anything unless one of them is a federal prosecutor, which... (see first sentence of post).

I don't have the energy to do this, but I sort of want to render their comment section unreadable to test their "no deleting comments except doxxing" rule.

These people absolutely do not deserve anonymity, as that is something they wield as a weapon via astroturfing and sockpuppeting. If they want anonymity they can speak to a reporter who has to put their name on an article where they can be cited as a single voice, and in the case of Nathan Thomas Merrill aka Titanium Dragon, the reporter can decide if his claims are meritorious. Further, some of these developers are being literally and figuratively accused of crimes, and the accused have a right to to face their accuser.

look, what really matters here is knowing if they will be employing TRESSFX tech to render stylistically flowing and swooshing arm hair. -
