  1. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

I'm pretty sure this is going to be one of my favorite records of 2015. I keep seeing this as alternate track from the soundtrack to To Live in Die in LA.
  2. Life

that first big TV is such a revelation! congrats! Also, this must be one of those markers of age, but I still want a big ass LED tv. I don't want to watch stuff on a 10" handheld or my phone. EDIT! JonCole already posted it! Sorry! when it comes to buying electronic stuff that i'm not 100% versed in, I usually recommend peeping The Wirecutter, which basically specializes in telling you what thing to buy and why: http://thewirecutter.com/ Maybe somebody has some insight that it actually stinks, but I've found it a useful reference.
  3. Meow.

look at all these wonderful cats.
  4. Meow.

    a few more old pictures!
  5. Meow.

I miss my puffer! Two years ago she's passed at 17 to cancer, a good cat life but never long enough. She was a good dear, who's love of me was only matched by her hatred of all things not me. She would let me hold her back the back legs and wheelbarrow her around. whenever my girlfriend slept over she would wake up to find her perched on her chest, staring, doing the cat thing is sitting on pointed feet for focused weight, rather than just sitting down and dispersing it.
  6. Guild Wars 2

My main is an engi and I have a predator! I love it though, the glow, the tracks, and the idle flame bursts are nice. There are the obvious downsides that the damage doesn't affect bundles, and i spend a lot of time with a bundle up. Frenzy though, damn! I don't know. The T6, and clover part can be BRUTAL to put into an underwater weapon. i did most of my T6 with laurels, but as i mentioned earlier, I hear it's easier to get obis in silverwaste and just overforge clovers.
  7. Guild Wars 2

So what are the not brand new players working on lately? Have you guys done the Bioluminescent set? I haven't done any of the achievement replay stuff, though I've been meaning to. I've been slowly gather materials for Fortune/Mastery part of a new legendary, waiting to see what the expansion offers. Aside from that I've been slowly building a Glorious armor set for my Guard alt, by trying to do the daily PvP stuff. Only 2 pieces left to go!
  8. Hotline Miami

i ordered the vinyl set weeks ago, but after the first press cut off, but i never got a DL code. Should I have? is anybody else in that boat?
  9. Wizard Jam - Idle Thumbs Game Jam Interest Gauge / Chit Chat corner

Your Buddy, Space Marine" or "The Capper" A reskinned Tapper but ultra jacked Space Marine Todd is wasting liberals who are trying to shred the constitutions he's guarding.
  10. Wizard Jam - Idle Thumbs Game Jam Interest Gauge / Chit Chat corner

    but but but, Vape Champion?
  11. Wizard Jam - Idle Thumbs Game Jam Interest Gauge / Chit Chat corner

Ideas: 1) Cool Cool Game 2) Rich Uncle vs Cool Uncle: like Lemmings or a reverse Tower Defense where you need to guide....lets say.... a Puffin through some kind of maze, and to navigate obstacles you place gifts from one of the uncles, but the "energy" to place an Uncle's Gift is only generated by placing AND USING a Gift from the opposite Uncle.
  12. Wizard Jam - Idle Thumbs Game Jam Interest Gauge / Chit Chat corner

oh man, i could submit the first few scenes of my AGS game, Nerd Alert! Space Quest 3 era-style. given that i made like 3 rooms, a few walk cycles, and some dialog before washing out. A preview of what I was hoping to do, at least.
  13. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I wouldn't say anything about this woman's experience, but my girlfriend is in the final few months of a PHD program, and basically there is nothing egalitarian or meritocratic about it. She went in unfunded as well, which she was heavily warned against, but hustled her way out of it, relentlessly applying for grants and taking weird jobs, like the department IT person. In her case there is a happy ending (three tenure track offers out of three campus interviews), but the whole thing was rough and unfair, and I'd have trouble pointing at just one thing as a tipping point.
  14. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

"But news media is (supposedly) a completely factual representation of what is actually going on in the real world." "But again, advertising at least to some degree is factual, it's based in the real world on real products." How is this guy posting forward in time from the 50s?
  15. Guild Wars 2

if you're super new to this, i'll give you this heads up: one thing i really like about the way the game is structured is the end game is largely about style that a WoW gear treadmill. in terms of gear/achievement there is Exotic (orange), Ascended (Pink), and Legendary (Purple) at the top end, and those stats haven't changed since launch. There are a few very expensive ways to make your character more powerful, but it's generally pretty fixed. also, they built so many key events for endgame to be in lower level zones so every area is somewhat regularly traffic'd by capped characters. the same can be said for crafting/farmed items. the highest end material requires a fair amount of lower tier material, so there is always value in collecting everything.
  16. Guild Wars 2

Oh man, I'm active daily, for about an hour or so. I'm still loving basically everything GW2. I've been in a guild of hardcore randoms that I enjoy, but I'd be down to hang or join a secondary guild! I've invited JonCole and his wife to it, though we haven't hung too much. I've been doing a lot of sPvP lately to get clovers for another legendary, but by some accounts key farming silverwates is a faster source of Obis to forge is the best method now, because it also gets you T6 for Mastery. I'm Ratbones.6058
  17. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

yeah, after the marathon bombings there was some changes made in police presence, including some heavy advance warnings to attendees to be careful where there going in certain costumes. we had one guy in a VERY well done Solid Snake with "m-16" wander out onto Boylston Street which ended very badly for him. I mean not actually hurt but probably had a solid snake in his trousers. (i'm so sorry)
  18. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Yeah, it seemed to hurt them a little when it first happened, because parents are only willing supply so much money and an entire weekend to kids nerd pursuits, but they seemed to find an equilibrium. There were some funny organizational issues when they were scheduled for the same weekend because they depleted and overdrafted the entire Boston areas holdings of folding chairs and AV equipment.
  19. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

PAX's core is run by Reed Expo, which is one of the biggest corporate conference organizers in the country. I don't doubt that they have their own security detail at least for insurance purposes. Small side story: One of my pals runs a largeish nerd convention in Boston, that is truly independent/non-profit, and it seemed like Reed was targeting them with PAX East, which conveniently started popping up during week before their convention for a few years. PAX East was relatively new at the time, and it was surprising to my friends as they had to lock in their dates up to 5 years in advance. Which is all to say that while the PA team has a lot of faults for their failure to get their minds right, the institutional aspect of PAX is (by my possibly flawed understanding) not run by them.
  20. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

on top of what was said, every era of gaming had games made in other engines, if we're looking at the early golden age of sierra/lucasarts they were made with in house engines/not coded from scratch. are we ruling out game made with unreal? source? idtech?
  21. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

while i find everything he stands for and expresses truly repugnant i have to on some tiny level commend his living with the Sinister Magician aesthetic.
  22. IDLE THUMBS 200

    1) Congrats on 200 episodes of my favorite show! Even in those lean years I would check the site like once every other week to see if there was a podblast (which there occasionally was). I'm a little disappointed the name isn't The Superb Show! 2) Man, I love some Steve on the cast. 3) Great instrumental theme. I'm always surprised there's never been a Chris Remo record, seems like there are a lot of good ideas. 4) Notch. I don't think it's possible to really comprehend what your life would look like if you came into 1.5 Billion dollars. A supply that you practically couldn't deplete short of trying to corner the art market on some major works. It has to have a distortion field that wrecks whatever your perception of responsibility looks like.
  23. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

You're absolutely right, and I'm sorry if I came off as flippant or dismissive about that. Though I think Twitter is under direct obligation to address their harassment problem, where my quibbles are endemic to the system.
  24. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I mess with twitter to try and make people chuckle, but I don't like the way it functions for what it seems to be used best for (giving voice to underrepresented groups (which i think is more contingent on it being phone based). I hate the way names eat up the already tiny character allotment, and if I reply to somebody I see my reply not in the original greater thread. I like forums like these. This post is like 3 tweets worth of chars!
  25. i wonder if Steve is saving up some delicious rumor to torment their game release. the conspicuous absence of sasquatches is telling, right? you know there is going to be some sasquatches (sasquatchi?) in there.
