Did they remove the global chat room feature? I guess send-to-all private messages also do the same thing. Also Ross, I don't mind being your intermediary if you still need one.

The Idle Thumbs Lords Management Consortium - Dota 2, LoL, other Lords Managers unite

I got tracked down by some random trader who said he wanted to buy my Dragonclaw Hook. I haven't played Dota in a few months, so I was baffled when I looked it up and saw it was worth nearly 70 euro. Jesus. Anyway, I ended up getting a bunch of copies of Monaco for friends, and this guy got his virtual bone hook. Hooray! -
Oh, you mean Computer Games?

Outsource it to China?

I'm not sure if NP2 pushing in-game messages to my email (and thus, phone) is a great thing or the most terrible thing.

Count me in if there's a second game set up. My life's just begging to be ruined.

Idle Thumbs 102: Standing on the Shoulders of Babies

Nick Breckon rating every film on Netflix as 4 stars is bizarrely hilarious. And by hilarious I mean "eh, it's ok". -
I disagree with your first point Frenetic.

Bryce DeWitt was one of the leading physicists working on the multiple-worlds version of quantum mechanics. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bryce_DeWitt

Can that be a real thing please? There can be a mode in Gone Home where you read Jeff Goldblum's diary and find out who he has a crush on.

I fell of the wagon for a while, but starting to pick up the pace again. One of the reasons I slowed down was that each vignette felt so satisfying that it kind of stood on its own and never pressured me into starting the next one. The first 200 or so pages is basically a party where you're constantly introduced to people, but you don't really know anyone. Getting to the point where viewpoint characters are starting to reappear is pretty exciting. Random spoiler thoughts up to ~pg 400:

She does do it a bit in the late game, and is more sombre when shit gets real. I don't expect whimsical lore stories in the middle of a battle, just some remark about a ruined statue or some other world building stuff during the downtime. I was just sad that everything past a certain point was all main quest related or OOH A LOCKPICK.

One thing I was disappointed with was the lack of Elizabeth interacting with the world. From the single trailer I saw (I think Liz puts a funny mask on at one point) I got the impression that if I stood near something cool long enough, she's come over and say some quip or tell me a bit about it. While it did happen a handful of times, as the game progressed she increasingly became some insane person who is only interested in picklocks and maybe coins. While I could imagine a version where Liz's constant quips and chatter could become annoying, I felt the dial on that environmental interaction stuff was set a bit too low.

Remember the Novint Falcon? Portal with the Oculus Rift and Novint Falcon support would probably be cool, but also a total barf-fest.

The closest I got, just from idly messing around, was that the main chord progression was A - F - D. This was in standard tuning so the key is probably wrong. But it does allow you to make a rad Heart Shaped Box/Video Games mashup.

Does anyone want to discuss this gameplay video with me?

Apparently Bowie wrote a load of songs for Omikron, and then reused them and changed the words a bit and made it into "Hours...". Which is hilarious, and I can imagine David Cage, whilst tipsy in a bar, telling everyone about how he should get some credit for a Bowie album. -
There's only a finite amount of times you can say this before it sounds ridiculous. In most of these cases, regardless of the actual storyline, the women are used in place of a macguffin. Justifying this use through supposedly necessary plot events seems like lazy writing and a complacent view of cultural influence. So while there may be nothing wrong with an individual kidnap storyline, there is something odd that there are hundreds of examples of this trope being used again and again by the industry. Strawman aside, it's this over-reliance of certain archetypes, such as the damsel in distress, that is the issue.
-
I guess you could consider it cherry-picked, but she did state she'd talk about counterexamples in the part 2 video so this argument may be a bit premature. And even so, I don't think a trope has to be present in every instance or even in the majority to still exist and have an impact. While the plot of Mario is ridiculous, it's arguably the most mainstream and influential video game series of our time. So it's less about people taking the storyline to heart, and more about how these tropes and gender stereotypes could have an influence on society (especially in the kid demographic Mario is aimed at).

Which Video Game Boss would make the best Actual Boss?
Laxan replied to Berzee's topic in Video Gaming
I also read a theory that he's called The Boss because you fight henchmen all game until you find the guy giving them their orders. He is literally just some boss. -

Tangent here, but the whole idea of calling the hardest enemy "The Boss" is really strange when you think about it. I tried to look up the etymology of this usage, and this metafilter thread points out an edition of Joystik Magazine as (one of) the first times it was used in this way. Any thumbs know anything else about it? Also, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boss_%28video_gaming%29 is a quality page. Edit: Apparently the hardest enemy in Galaga was actually called "Boss Galaga", so this may have been the birth of the phrase. -
The Far Cry 3 guy was thiiiiis close to reading out an Alice quote on stage.

Woah. Just tuned in and was surprised to see Dara O Briain hosting. I guess the BAFTAs are legit and less half-hearted than I assumed.

Starting to wish I went for the "BAFTAs +1" kickstarter tier now.
