  1. IDLE THUMBS KICKSTARTER!

And now I can sigh in relief.
  2. IDLE THUMBS KICKSTARTER!

And those of you saying it'd be a subtle difference, while you're correct, it again adds nothing to the experience of listening to people converse. Subtle audio quality is important in an immersed setting like a video game or film, but the bottom line is the basics are what's important. Do you know what wouldn't be subtle about a change to stereo? File size. And while download speeds aren't a problem for most people, bandwidth caps are now a thing companies are embracing. I'll admit, as soon as I saw the request for stereo /higher audio output, my brain seized on this. That may have everything to do with being on mobile broadband though, where I have 5GB a month. If I can save on data use, will.

Have you ever listened to an actual radio show, be it terrestrial or satellite? They don't do this. Podcasts are essentially talk radio shows to begin with. There's no need to complicate it. Asking for stereo input from a quality standpoint is superfluous, and as for the function of one channel to the next, how is that going to better the experience of hearing guys fart around about video games?
  4. IDLE THUMBS KICKSTARTER!

I never had any problems with the voice clarity in any of the podcasts. On that note, I remember there was a reader mail once that said they couldn't tell the difference between Jake and Nick's voices, which I thought was weird because they sound pretty distinct.
  5. IDLE THUMBS KICKSTARTER!

I'm glad someone eventually said this, though it just goes to show that people have other priorities in mind that top Nick Breckon. But not me. I saw that question of what to do with extra money and my first thought was getting Nick in for recording! Edit - The phrase "Won't somebody think of the Nicks out there?" comes to mind. Followed by "Congrats Nick."
  6. Fund Tim Schafer's next game YOURSELF!

I think he could maybe use the shot to do what he's wanted (which is, a "comedy game," not a game with comedy as support), if only as an example of how it probably won't work out like how he imagines. But that's putting a lot of faith in his ability to learn from mistakes or be critical of himself / his own work. I just don't think it's possible to have something (a book, movie, game, etc) be comedy. Or well, there is a kind of book that does that - joke books. But even stand-up comedy is social commentary or story telling with comedy as the way to get that done.

Apparently Sean Vanaman is married now. I think as a wedding gift people should pitch in the closing amount of dollars needed to get Jake on that commute ride. And congrats to Mr. and Mrs. Famous Vanamam. Boy, what an exciting time for the Thumbs crew.
  8. IDLE THUMBS KICKSTARTER!

As long as that lucky winner realizes Jake needs to be returned intact and unharmed for future podcast recording, there shouldn't be any problems! Unless he ambushes him with a pack of big dogs.
  9. "This whole story's basically been an elaborate excuse to use that caption" It's worth it, I'll say.
  10. The Legend of Zelda

Wow, not only is this the first time someone hasn't responded to me in vitriol upon seeing how I feel about that game, but you also nailed what made me dislike it. I feel better now.
  11. It's too bad that Sony PR event for God of War in which food was served out of a gutted ram or whatever happened before Idle Thumbs' podcast form. Then again, I could mention it anyway since silly-PR is hilarious.
  12. The Legend of Zelda

Udvarnoky mentioned the one thing I avoided like the plague in Wind Waker, my utmost favorite game in the series ever - the pictograph / statue figure collecting. Seriously, even I couldn't bring myself to do that. My brother did, though, to his credit. So I still got to see it all! Also, I was able to drop the facade of liking "every" Zelda game probably earlier than most. Before reading the next line of text, imagine I'm reaching to my chin, pulling a rubber mask off my face and revealing my true dark nature. Got it? Okay. I hate Majora's Mask, worst Zelda game ever.
  13. The Legend of Zelda

He says that the recent Zelda games are broken at their core, defining the 'core' as the "central structure and mechanics." Now this is at the start of the article, but already it ignores that the original Zelda had its own mechanical flaws. Though, that aside, I'm mostly pointing this out because I don't personally see the 'core' of Zelda games as being their mechanics under the hood. The core for Zelda games is the presentation layer. To me, you still play a hero in a classic good vs. evil battle, still gathering weapons and items to further your progress toward the final confrontation - the new Zelda games don't differ from the original on this at all. The core is retained, as far as I'm concerned. This is all opinion nonsense that just comes down to agreeing to disagree in the long run. On the "freedom to explore" point: Absolutely correct about Nintendo making a false claim here. However, I feel like he's perhaps missing some key points about 1) change in game design and 2) fixing archaic game design. A game works perfectly fine if, at the start, you can run around wherever. A game is also fine if it guides you along via "locks" (blocked content) that you need to return to later. It's okay to favor one over the other, but calling one a broken version of the other is disingenuous and false. It's different, is all. His complaint about cracked walls kind of irritates me, because again he's not looking at two possibilities in design. Either these spaces need to be hidden and found, OR they are marked. What makes each of these design choices work? In the latter, a lot of spots to use later-game items appear toward the start. But if Let's Plays or discussions with people have taught me anything, it's that these things are often forgotten. People aren't that tied into back-tracking, and THAT is what balances out known-secrets. For the former - how the original LoZ worked in that you had to test every tile - you have to provide a means to make this happen with relative ease. That game was tedious as shit when it came to bombing rock faces for secret entrances. Bombs were finite. And burning bushes was worst - until you got the red candle, you could only use the blue candle once before having to exit and re-appear on screen. That is tedious, and frankly it is not okay and it is not a sign of being better at a game or more hardcore or more devoted or anything. It's a sign that you're willing to put up with bullshit, for the moment. I find it kind of funny that he refers to the extra content in the new games as "work," but ignores the previously pointed out "bomb and burn every tile" problem from Legend of Zelda. I'm gonna stop reading at this point, I've got shit to do for the day. I can't say I'm interested in reading the ramblings of someone who is pretty much taking on that old-man-on-a-porch persona, telling kids to get off the lawn. The guy isn't able to loop back his points to previous statements he made. He's dead set on hating newer Zelda games, despite playing them still, which now that I wrote that makes me think that he was perhaps coming from a position of little conviction to begin with. Like maybe he casually mentioned to some people that the Zelda games aren't as difficult as the first, and he had the idea of writing something to justify the statement as excruciating as possible. Edit - Typo fix.
  14. Does that promotional event in San Francisco where balloons were launched and subsequently fell into the bay, leaving it super dirty, count? I think this was a THQ thing.
  15. IDLE THUMBS KICKSTARTER!

They could always hire someone with the extra money to run by the studio during recordings going, "weeeeEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOOooooooo."
  16. IDLE THUMBS KICKSTARTER!

This raises an important issue: Is "Idl3 Thumbs" (as Steve has been calling it on Twitter) going to continue the feature of sirens?
  17. IDLE THUMBS KICKSTARTER!

$35k what is this nonsense. I wasn't even gone for that long. Just before I left I check the thing and it hit the goal.
  18. IDLE THUMBS KICKSTARTER!

The Thumbs Baby. It'll be a Kotaku article, and then in 20 years they'll track the adult-child down and ask about his/her legacy.
  19. IDLE THUMBS KICKSTARTER!

You, sir, have provided me an out. Or, in. Whichever. Point is, if this job interview I'm going to in a few minutes is successful, I'm gonna put some money in. Though, the damn thing is at $27k already. By the time I get home it's gonna be past the goal. Edit - And just a couple moments later, $28k.
  20. IDLE THUMBS KICKSTARTER!

If I wasn't between jobs, you guys would have a portion of my money for this. Easily. But all I can do is link this around to people I know were fans of the podcast and convince them to give money instead.
  21. Far Cry 3

That's honestly going to disappoint me. I currently have an old-as-can-be computer so I haven't played anything that isn't an indie game since 2006, and even then I was pushing it, but I got Far Cry 2 (well, a pack with part 1 on Steam) specifically because of the frustrating stuff Idle Thumbs discussed. Is there anything known about any systems / functions carrying over from FC2 to part 3?
  22. Far Cry 3

I'm a little worried about some reactions I'm seeing to the game now. There seems to be a percent of people on the internet, and I don't know how big that percent is, saying that the game is less interesting now because the protagonist and his friend are "bro's." Which I don't think is correct at all. I mean, yeah, they seem like college guys or whatever, but they aren't Pauly Shore'ing all over the game.
  23. New Idle Thumbs Website

That or someone left a hot scoop on the floor not far from him.
  24. New Idle Thumbs Website

Jake looks concerned for something. And for some reason his pose makes me think of him as an old man.
