The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS

A friend elsewhere actually compiled this. Quoting him: -
Idle Thumbs 85: "An Indulgent Dateline" or "An Indulgent Episode Title"
Henroid replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I'm not sure it's mattering one way or the other. There was this very very brief moment of "HMMMMM" when the trailer came out regarding him raising a tomahawk in the air before presumably scalping someone, but it went away and I haven't seen it since. Nor has there really been a, "Finally, a Native American protagonist!" cry. -

I wanna go back to the discussion about internet communities - this time a video game community specifically. So in less than 12 hours, City of Heroes is shutting down for good. And people I got to know during that time and I are talking again and generally commiserating over the whole debacle and going over highlights from the last few years. It's not a game I got into from day one. I actually only got it in like, 2007? And I would play sporadically but goddamn was it fun all the time, and it had everything to do with the community (but because my computer would struggle to run the game, I would reach points of frustration and stop for a while). As far as internet communities that exist within a game, CoH had one of the most tame and helpful communities too. I wanna give them some credit for that, because they stand out over any other game I've experienced. -

Apparently Jeff Gerstmann said of the Far Cry 3 protagonist and his friends, "They deserve to be sold into slavery or killed." I'm still looking up the actual direct quote but the sentiment is enough for me to say that is fucking disgusting of him. I get that "bro" characters are usually dumb, but that's ridiculous and tasteless. -

I take it Cortana's lines in Halo 4 are as bad as the medics in Starcraft 2 asking, "Where does it hurt?" -

I don't think Molyneux is hurting for money or pitching ideas to publishers without loss of creative control. He has the clout and financial backings necessary to do what he wants. -

Man, don't get me started on that Peter Molyneux Kickstarter. Usually I'm fine with what he does and says. Just to not leave any mystery, he doesn't need Kickstarter. I won't get into it more than that. Anyway, back to the topic at hand, I think the guys making this have earned their place to KS this game. I imagine the first one took plenty of time and it's not unreasonable to want to be rewarded for it. Great thing about KS is that you don't have to put a price on the product. Unless they decide to do that. I'm sure that'll make some people miffed. I just wish the title was shorter. It's funny, don't get me wrong, but good lord. -

Jake describing The Dig as LA's take on Myst is exactly how I thought of the game. But I would go further to say that it feels more comprehensible and I know why I'm doing the things I'm doing in The Dig. It's more put together. Maybe I'm not remembering Myst right but it was nonsensical to me and my drive to beat it was minimal. -

But Sega is known for characters and even just faces of games. Sonic, Bayonetta, Valkyria Chronicles, Jet Set Radio, Phantasy Star, Streets of Rage (especially this), Kid Chameleon, Comix Zone, Shinobi, Panzer Dragoon, Shining Force games... I mean holy shit, Sega should actually do this. And it would be great. -

I cannot make it through this Far Cry 2 discussion without constantly laughing. I like Kirk Hamilton already. -

It really is a "no shit" moment. Since they revealed the characters and third parties were involved I knew this was going to tank. I've also been aggressive against this game because it was supposed to demonstrate Sony's brand strength, and they're too dumb to realize that their brand strength has jack-all to do with video game characters they've published into being. I would hope for this to be a humbling experience for them but it sadly will not be. -

Man that just goes to show how much I'm not in theaters because I didn't see any of that. Or were they the same ads as the ones on TV? "IT ONLY DOES EVERYTHING." -

Sony's lead era in video games was pretty much, "We have all the video games ever." -

Two big pieces of news, for once not about journalism shit or Sony or Nintendo. The first, in fact, is rumors about MS and their next console gen play: I'll just carry over my response to this from elsewhere: And the next news piece is about... Telltale Games! It's great to read news of a company growing for once in this industry rather than "Here, layoffs." And it's doubly great that it's this company in particular because it's pretty well-earned. Congrats to them (and by extension Jake and Sean!). -

That Star Citizen discussion, aka Jake being Jake, is my favorite thing. That game really does come down to "holy shit!" though. Edit - Oh my question was taken. Thank you again. And completely agreed about Latin chorus'. It is the worst fallback to, "We need this to be an epic moment." -

Well it's because the content of review publications and sites is also the ad revenue generating material. When I listen to the radio and they do a spot ad for a film or Call of Duty or whatever, it doesn't grate me because the content of the radio show I'm listening to isn't grounded in that stuff. But if I was listening to a radio show that's all about film and all of their sponsors are for films / film makers, suddenly I'd have to be wary as shit of the content I'm hearing. But then we reach the odd spot with video games where it's like, okay, Mountain Dew and Doritios. Oh wait, those are travesties. We can't win. -

So the aftermath of this is pretty incredible in its own right. First, MCV's defense via Twitter is that their target audience is retailers and not consumers. Which is a load because why are they selling the magazine to consumers? And then the guy running the twitter account for MCV decided to have some sort of melt down. And lastly, apparently this past Friday MCV fired Wainwright. -

Incidentally a friend of mine working at RPS is the one who brought this all to my attention right when it was going down. The reason why all of this is such news is because of MCV's response at every layer. Anyway, Rob Florence definitely made this tweet, presumably about the "grumpy Eurogamer" "odd one out" bit: Sometimes I feel like such an ass for loving it when the gloves come off like this. -

There's no article on this yet because it's a breaking event, but MCV posted an article about the new Hitman saying that it's received all positive reviews. Meanwhile, even looking at Metacritic, no it hasn't. The article ignores sourcing the bigger websites critical of the game. The person that wrote the article has professional ties to the developer. Rather than being gracious about it, MCV is denying any wrongdoing on any level and the head editor (though I haven't seen it personally, yet) was even getting mouthy at people who were pointing out the missed negative reviews and the writer's conflict of interest. Keep in mind MCV has made no comments about Doritosgate. I guess that's a body we can consider to be an advertisement firm moreso than a journalism one. -

Along with the Wii U launch comes this news. The short of it is that developers on the eShop set their own prices and sales, and the price of dev patching is gone. That's a big step up for how console patching has been working out for developers until now. -

A friend elsewhere brought me back to my senses, pointing out Pincus' earnings despite the company's fall.
