Idle Thumbs 111: Cruisin' for a Word that Rhymes With Cruisin'
Henroid replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Oh my goodness, that Tony Hawk Citizen Kane reference was incredible and legit. -
The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS
Henroid replied to Henroid's topic in Video Gaming
I'm on a strict diet of no-Penny-Arcade-Report but the digital distribution side of the business doesn't quite rival the traditional method yet. I'm sure the DD numbers are more significant and will continue to be more so, but they don't out-do hard-copies of software yet. -
The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS

I can't remember what episode this was from, but a long time ago in Idle Thumbs Chris was speaking about E3 (or GDC, I can't remember which) saying that it would get him excited for video games - then he would see the NPD data after and say in defeat, "Oh. Fuckin' whatever." I guess that's definitely happening this year. -
Okay, got the problem fixed. If you have noscript and have any beta5 games still running you may have to add this domain to load it properly: http://5.tritonsrage.appspot.com

Is anyone else having trouble getting the game to load? A new beta version has been applied is my only guess at what's going on.

Next thing you know, your Live email inbox is going to be "on the omfg cloud." You know like how all email inboxes are.

I dunno about you guys but if one more person at Microsoft says something like this: I'm gonna flip.

Idle Thumbs 110: The Thing That You Needed To Say
Henroid replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I wish there didn't have to be a stigma or shame when it comes to liking Nintendo games. Like fucking whatever, who cares. Not to suggest anyone here / on the podcast had that going on, it's just my observation of Nintendo fans / non-fans these days. -
Idle Thumbs 110: The Thing That You Needed To Say

It's a shame Sean wasn't around on this one, I wanted to hear him try to tie-in some Biden references when the presidential campaign metaphor came up. -
I thought that people here would enjoy this - a couple people I know had this exchange: "wtf is RYSE: Son of Rome? Latin doesn't have a Y" "But it does have a Q, a T and an E apparently."

... Poe's Law is totally screwing with my perception of this post.

I'm actually a little irate at Nintendo for cock-teasing a new Legend of Zelda like that.

We have a new quote from Don Mattrick, recorded Sunday, publicized by Gametrailers today.

Okay, new shit has come to light. So Jack Tretton clarified in an interview that the Playstation 4 won't stop publishers from establishing DRM / anti-trade policies if they wish. He asserted that Sony's in-house publishing won't do that kind of stuff, and left the answer at that. People are reading the worst into it or struggling to figure out what it means. Luckily there's an actual answer to consider. - Publishers establishing DRM checks has been available to them on the PS3 and 360 already. It was just a matter of them deciding not to. - Sony isn't establishing the mechanisms for publishers to do this; if a publisher wants to, it's all on them (in terms of cost and effort) (whereas Microsoft is providing some amount of the necessities) - If a game does have DRM on the PS4, it just means that game has it. Your PS4 won't brick over one game, unlike the XB1.

As far as bad news goes, this wasn't exactly a blind-side. The reality is Sony providing their online service for free up 'til now has been incredibly generous of them. The expectation is that the money consumers are paying in (which is, what, $50 a year?) is gonna help the PSN (or PS+, whatever the fuck they're calling it now) with stability and speed problems it has. Not saying it doesn't suck to lose something that was free. Just trying to give some perspective.

This is good, because I liked the first game's theme, even if it got overshadowed by the other Still Alive.

I can't get the image out of my head that Bobby Kotick is going to take advantage of this whole situation somehow and do it in dramatic fashion. Like he's gonna drop down from the rafters in the expo hall wearing a Batman costume, or probably dressed as Nosferatu.

I wanted to immortalize Jake's shame with getting the year wrong but also I asked him about something on Twitter.

Incidentally it's the same strategy Activision has been following (and just for some extra credit, Electronic Arts has been as loud and stupid as Microsoft, minus the mixed-messaging part).

Today has been a bit of a revival in the outrage over the whole thing. There's more details, and more unanswered questions. As it stands, MS is claiming to not take the cut for used sales; it will go right to publishers. And the whole system of used games on the XB1 being relegated through the Live service is an opt-in for publishers to use at their own discretion. Which means some of them won't use it at all. But you can bet your ass Electronic Arts is all over that - it replaces their Online Pass thing, as was previously discussed. Some of the bigger news today came from Patrick Klepek. I think he was the first to drop the bombshell that, aside from the press roundtable being canceled for E3, Microsoft is now canceling one-on-one interviews that were scheduled. And Microsoft's response did not help the situation, because two separate responses were given; one was that it was isolated scheduling conflicts, and the other was, "Yes, all executives are no longer available for any interviews." Meanwhile rumors hit the shit at NeoGAF regarding the operating system and it continuing to drag ass in development. Apparently the OS on display at the presentation was faked. I mean, the Kinect responses being faked and all, whatever, I expect that shit. But the OS itself being faked because it actually lags and stutters and all that? This is bad.

I can't wait to write about the game I've been playing the last couple of weeks. The concept of not making a move has been a valid strategy for myself and another player in the game. The constant fear of the retaliation is so good.

Has anyone else noticed that ship travel is now directly linked to the hourly ticks of the game? There's no beating someone to a star by 2 minutes type shenanigans anymore.

Missile spam that mofo. Or if you have the plasma beam, charge shots of it at him. Charged plasma beam shots are stronger than super missiles. Screw attack through his fire and jump away from him, never let him pick you up.

I was just now coming to post the news. That is awful.
