An adventure game for Castle. I've only seen a few episodes but what the hell, it could work.

I'm disappointed in the lack of people knowing that of course they do. ANYWAY Dwarf Fortress taught me that no matter how hard you try to please people, they will eventually enter fey moods and start wrecking shit, which will set off chain reactions of depression as members of a fort are torn to pieces by a berserking dwarf, who is eventually (hopefully) put down by the military.

I kinda get jealous of extreme rage quit stories. Not of being the quitter, but at least witness to it. The only person I witnessed having extreme rage quits was my brother, but he was kind of abusive about it - my mere presence in the room while he was playing a game would be enough for him to start cursing me out and blaming me somehow, whether or not I was even watching. So yeah unfortunately there's an uncool side to rage quitting. At least I have Jake's angle to be amused by, it was kind of adorable to hear.

Robert Ashley is the guy who was doing the A Life Well Wasted thing right? I miss those.

Currently listening but oh my goodness, this conversation about cell phones / recording our lives instead of living our lives. The best, and 100% my sentiment. Also this post is ironic.

In place of this forum not having any up-vote system built into this I'll have to quote and say this is the best way the problem has been stated. Quick aside on the Square thing I linked earlier today; Eidos isn't specifically named in their plans, but it falls under the grouping of "overseas studios." So I still think it's bad news. -

In other news, someone at Microsoft got weirdly honest about problems they're having. With no fluff. http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/11/06/xbox-one-cloud-updates-may-force-mid-game-reboot The gist of it is that the updates to 'the cloud' force games to reboot. And the updates are frequent. And they haven't solved the problem yet. -

Bad news if anyone likes Eidos games. http://www.hd.square-enix.com/eng/news/pdf/14q2slides.pdf Square's master plan to turn things around for them financially is to make Eidos produce online games. So potential RIP to Deus Ex and Tomb Raider. -

The listing out of steps of what you need to ensure to happen first is actually the thing I really needed to feel confident about this super-breeding crap. So I'm gonna give it a shot soon to see if it's easier than it seems.

The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS

Okay so Nintendo has decided to sell the Wii Mini in the USA. Like this holiday season. The only thing I can think of when seeing this news is that Nintendo is internally gambling on the Wii Mini boosting Wii U sales by way of consumers being able to compare things directly. "Wait, this new Wii Mini thing doesn't have any online capability. I guess this Wii U thing is better." Problem is, do consumers give a shit about that and will they buy more Wii Minis than Wii Us? This is going to be a really weird holiday season. -
Okay. Get ready for this. Portal. I welcome any and all chastizing / berating any of you feel to send my way. I never avoided the game per se, but I never felt compelled to jump in on it for some reason. I see now that I am wrong. Here's the amazing thing - I heard the credits music for the first time just now too. I'm so glad I managed to avoid it all this time because it really would've diminished its impact. What a neat game. I wonder if there's gonna be a sequel!

Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.
Henroid replied to Tanukitsune's topic in Video Gaming
This is something of a call for help because I don't want to quit the game. Especially since I had only just started. Like everyone else I have a backlog of Steam games. I decided to install and play Magicka finally. I had heard it was awesome because of the spell crafting in it and woohoo. But getting hands on with the game, not having watched any footage before, really let me down. The game feels clunky and funky to control. Combat is too fast paced for me to consider careful combinations of spells. And it's too easy to accidentally screw up a spell combination by throwing in an element that counters another that's present. It's also frustrating to cast those special recipe spells. They should just cast with the regular casting button, but instead you have THREE spell cast buttons (self, project, and then the "charge" or recipe button). I'm frustrated and am stuck wishing this game was something else than what it is, because what it was described as sounds amazing. As it is, I'm just picking Lightning and Fire repeatedly to chain-lightning enemies and also set them on fire. Repeat infinitely. I don't bother trying to heal NPCs because enemies just get in the effing way and kill NPCs faster than I could even heal them anyway. -

There's a lot of people on the net going, "PFFT WHATEVS ALL I WANT IS VIDEO GAMES." Not that I'm one of them. In fact the loss of that media stuff hurts me too, because it would've saved me a lot of trouble of setting some shit up. -

Yeah all that stuff. Except the YouTube thing. I saw a friend of mine claiming that the "Twitch only" thing was bad for them, but it's like... it's actually good. YouTube has been turning into an increasingly hostile environment for streamers to upload content to. Twitch is like, the video game streaming service. It's popular for a reason and Sony went to them for a reason. So not being able to upload to YouTube is like... so fucking what? -

The Tiger Woods thing doesn't surprise me. The guy is a falling star and EA wants to make the best business move they can. Also I feel bad for the C&C folks. EA also seems to be crazy. In today's news, Sony decided to D-day their PS4 with some bad news via a new FAQ. http://blog.us.playstation.com/2013/10/30/ps4-the-ultimate-faq-north-america/ -
All of my excitement for this game just disappeared in an instant. Before now, when I saw people talking about IV breeding (IV = Individual Value, or basically the bonus stats that particular pokemon has) my eyes would just roll over it and ignore it. Then I made the mistake of reading about this stuff because I wanna breed some badass Pokemon. How hard could it be? And then I saw the truth. All the people going, "I want a Pokemon MMO!" fucking have it, and HAVE had a Pokemon MMO since, what, the 3rd generation? Aside from the work that goes into getting a Pokemon with the highest stats possible, I became literate in the nonsense jargon for endgame stat building. And it's all monstrous and scary, and VERY World of Warcraft theorycraft-esque. None of that is what amounts to "fun" for me, and the fact that everyone playing this fucking game does it means that in order to compete I'd have to do it too. But I'd rather not lower myself to that level. I beat the Elite Four, became the champ... I think that's good enough for me. Some day in the future I'll sell my copy off. But man. Talk about having a veil lifted from your eyes. I used to be excited about seeing Eevees or catching Cubones and whatever. But now I see that's all bullshit, that all my peers are caught up in fucking dominating in a game that was just so, so relaxed in the past.

Idle Thumbs 127: His Boss Encounter
Henroid replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Oh my gosh the Wildcat freaks me the fuck out. -
Well, from my memory of playing Pokemon Blue a long time ago is sort of the same. Walking around in grass is how you get your random encounters for Pokemon, which you can catch. Being in different parts of the game makes different pokemon show up in the wild. The NPCs you're fighting (trainers of various sorts, from kids to pros) are your source of income for the moment (so don't go crazy spending money) (later in the game you get access to some ways to have infinite income sources). You can have a team of six Pokemon with you on hand. You can think of it as "extra lives" if you want, though changing mid-battle has its uses. Pokemon is essentially a JRPG when you're playing the singleplayer. But all the Pokemon you're catching and leveling are meant for the 'end-game,' which is pretty much the competitive part. You don't have to worry too much about power playing, especially if it's your first time. Pokemon is a series that was very much built up on being easy to learn (and beat), but being difficult to 'master.' Mostly what you have to worry about is learning what types affect other types (like Fire is strong against Ice and Grass but weak against Ground and Water, etc).

It's definitely their Achilles heel. I heard that the Halloween theme to the eShop brought a new spooky feature - crashing when you exit pages on it. As for Pokemon, I have a feeling I'm going to end up buying all the clothes before I get close to having that supposedly coupon that exists. And I still can't figure out this dang ol' "style" thing in the game.

I almost felt ripped off, because with the money amulet thing I only made 64k back from the battles. Then I finally looked at the "big mushrooms" in my inventory and saw that they were for selling. Made like 150k from them.

I know there's a separate thread for it but I decided to post about it here. Pokemon Y! I wrapped up the story a couple days ago, now toiling in the post-game to make a team worthy of competing against friends. This game was pretty damn amazing. The past couple of generations (Black/White, Diamond/Pearl) I had played like... 3 badges into each, but they failed to hold my attention like Emerald did (and Blue before that). What helped this time was the extreme abundance of old Pokemon from the generations I was really into the series (1st and 3rd gen). I mean really, the nostalgia was in overdrive and for the better. There's only like, what, 70 new Pokemon in X/Y, and a lot of those are evolutions so it's less than that actually. In a weird way, I want to say that Pokemon X/Y qualifies as Pokemon Red/Blue 2. The only disappointing factor was Team Flare not being silly and misanthropic. Seeing their bad-guy level be so serious just had me kinda feeling like it was out of bounds for the tone of Pokemon. But that's a mild complaint. I liked their theme (aesthetically) a lot.

The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS

I've been away for a while trying to get situated back in the Bay Area. Fell behind Idle Thumbs episodes, and bleh. SO NEWS! This is sorta press related but the implications (well, possible implications) make it business side. So, from the editor-in-chief at Polygon: I wonder what it means! Possibilities: 1) Microsoft hasn't sent out review copies / hardware. If not at all, in a timely manner. 2) MS has some sort of embargo going on. Why though? 3) Maybe Polygon specifically hasn't gotten anything from MS. Which means MS was scorned somehow. My guess is on the embargo though. They either want to have a deluge on XB1's launch day to flood the press for awareness' sake. Or maybe they have an embargo in place because the review hardware they sent out was incomplete (MS has been working on the hardware as late as August), and they don't want reviews to be noting poor performance or glitches or whatever.
