Oh, another awesome positive highlight to post about. Today I was ringing a lady up at work, who had a (what appeared to be, in age) five year old daughter. The lady explained that she was in a bit of a hurry because her kid is autistic and is uncomfortable with changes in routine. And I saw it a bit, but there was no big scene or anything. All that happened was the daughter asking her mom questions about a few things (one of them being why they were being rung up by a different person; I assume part of the routine change was them not going to their usual store). Her kid was REALLY well spoken, like perfectly calm enunciation and everything. I mean for the most part, her kid wasn't that different. Which I knew would be the case. At any rate, as they walked away I remember thinking to myself, "Man, fuck Jenny McCarthy for freaking people out." Autism doesn't make kids a tragedy. In this case it almost seemed like the kid was more grown up in some respects.

The times I get upset with myself or others about specific word use is when it is in a prepared fashion. When people are speaking off-the-cuff in a fast paced conversation, or hosting a radio / talk show, I tend to let that sort of thing slide. In most cases, people will apologize for throwing in a drive-by use of "retard" or whatever else, and there is an effort in general (in the professional setting of entertainment) to step away from those words. I think that's great. I allow this in my world view because it can be so difficult to kick a habit, and communication is such a daily necessity that it gets to be one of the hardest things to change about ourselves. It took me over a decade to finally tone down on how often I swear. I'm still getting over uses of the word 'retard.' I know what people intend and that they aren't cruel - there's nothing to be gained from instantly turning aggressive on someone. Sometimes a softly delivered, "Hey by the way" can go a lot further than chewing someone out. I see it happen in real life quite often, and building resentment over a mistaken use of language isn't going to win people over into getting any better. Of course you will get those folks who actually double-down on and refuse to apologize for word use, or dismiss the nature of why they're harmful. Those are the instances where I actually start to build a grudge toward people and don't blame anyone else for doing the same.

The PA guys themselves may not be doing anything but I do know the community admin isn't going to tolerate any GamerGate shit on the forum. As evidenced by a tweet he made in response to GamerGate people saying they need to find allies on the PA website itself. But yeah. Mike and Jerry try to play things out as if they are politicians, which is the wrong way to handle anything in life. It's frustrating.
  4. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

By the way I'm seeing on Twitter that at PAX East, one of the 'enforcers' (lame attempt at security) is a GamerGater, and they are currently stalking Brianna Wu, taking pictures of her and tweeting threats. No idea if the PAX folks have made an effort to stop this person, let alone condemn them.
  5. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Sounds like a classic case of "I grew up in (insert decade here) and I can't keep up with the world around me changing, including fashion trends!"

As an American citizen caught up in the class warfare going on, to me, it's enough that Notch isn't working or lobbying to make the wealthy wealthier. Plus, his profit sharing with Mojang was unbelievably generous (I remember a story about it a couple / few years ago, vaguely). Cynical of me, I know. And yeah he should take up a charity or two, but he has time to decide.
  7. Ferguson

I'm not familiar with the geography of the area so I should rephrase; The neighboring biggest police department will get Ferguson added to its jurisdiction.
  8. Ferguson

The Ferguson area will likely get folded into the regular St. Louis police department's jurisdiction.
  9. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

A quote that showed up in my Twitter feed. From GamerGate, but I don't know where from specifically yet.
  10. IDLE THUMBS 200

From where I sit, the important thing is that Notch doesn't have a "I got your money, fuck you!" attitude. What he does in his early retirement is his business.
  11. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I wouldn't go to the account pictured because it is psychotic, but just pointing out one thing GamerGate is getting aggressive about: Teleprompters. They've gone full-on Sarah Palin. Someone should ask them what they read.
  12. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

GamerGate is threatening Google with taking their "business" elsewhere.
  13. IDLE THUMBS 200

    It was pretty good.
  14. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

GamerGate has spent so many months telling people not to be sensitive about their harassment and threats of varying degrees. Then Tim Schafer makes a joke, and all of a sudden GamerGate loses its shit and is super sensitive. Imagine that.
  15. Well people leaving one by one is one thing; the culture / style of a studio can be kept intact if the replacements are brought in to nurture or further that stuff. But if a studio is entirely ripped apart from the ground up, yeah, what good is the name? At any rate, the SimCity fiasco (not just what the game was, but Maxis' poor handling of it and not fighting EA on the bad decisions) is what told me Maxis was gone a long time ago.
  16. Electronic Arts has shut down Maxis. It's for the better, perhaps. http://kotaku.com/ea-shuts-down-simcity-developer-maxis-1689454903 Edit - A ton of people are super unhappy with the timing of this, saying it seems like EA is trying to have the news of the closure buried while GDC is ongoing, in addition to this weekend being a PAX event. Can't blame them. Also, great irony because those accusations alone just bring the news to the top of any trending list out there. Also to clarify my "for the better" comment, hey, SimCity died a couple years ago when always-online-SimCity came out. I already mourned that series.

I have a really big issue with people who say it's wrong, or "not helpful," to have an emotional response. Especially while under attack.
  18. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

As I said in the past, when you let hateful, spiteful assholes play with just each other (after removing them from your communities) you'll eventually see them turn on each other.
  19. There's an article on Gamasutra about indie game development and how well their products sell on all available platforms. http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/237811/500_games_launched_per_day_on_iOS_last_year_and_other_digital_sales_facts.php XB1 information was hard to come by (which isn't surprising; MS is playing the game Sony did last gen of being protective of information that can be used to make them look bad), but as of late 2014 indie game sales are in the ballpark of PS4 indie game sales. But that's based on info before Christmas 2014; if anyone missed it, the PS4 had a HUGE holiday for sales and there's probably going to be a gap in indie game performance on those two platforms now. Oh also, indie devs hate the parity clause MS has going on. Nintendo is kinda getting looked down on because they aren't really into the whole 'sales' thing. Which is to say, buying things for cheaper on a weekend or something. Also 3DS indie games do really well in Japan. It's still worth making things on the 3DS and Wii U, it's just that you can't expect Steam-smash-hit numbers. Speaking of Steam, the article more or less just notes that the marketplace there is crowded and competitive as hell. What I'll add is that a couple days ago I saw something on Twitter comparing the playtime data of Evolve vs. Crusader Kings 2. The former had a bigger peak rate of players, but it died off pretty goddamn fast, and CK2 is still GROWING after all this time and currently exceeds Evolve's daily player rate. Last, as the article title says, on iOS there were 500 games released per day in 2014, while Android had 250. That is goddamn BANANAS. That sounds like a marketplace more crowded and dysfunctional than Steam's by quite a large margin. It truly makes it seem like a lottery for success, except instead of simply buying a ticket you have to put an amount of work in. I say "an amount" because there's so many clone products (or maybe outright ripoffs) that, really, how much time does it take to change a name and a graphic or two?

I feel like I'm watching the birth of how video game enthusiasts will attach themselves to the Republican party. Edit - Excuse me, how SOME video game enthusiasts, that identify as "gamers" while spewing hateful shit and destroying the English language, will attach themselves to the Republican party.
  21. The thing about Walker is that he's one of the few people (and the first) to speak up about the cultural-ills in and surrounding video games, and the bad-faith shit that goes down on the business end. I appreciate people like that. I don't require them to be sophisticated or elegant in their language, just to have the courage to speak up in the first place. As for Kuchera, he's the asshole that told people to move when complaints about the XB1 requiring internet being a thing were coming up. That's a guy that is detached from everyone else in the world.
  22. Recently completed video games

I beat Shovel Knight last night. I'm gonna try to 100% the game (as far as achievements and I guess item collection rate goes), but for now I'm pleased. There were definitely frustrating moments when it came to the difficulty, but they weren't impossible or RNG type moments. That was something a very much appreciated about the game. I do think it ends up getting silly as far as boss fights go, when you have enough health to just take damage and keep bashing their face in faster than they can bash yours in. I'm told NG+ is more difficult though, so maybe that's all I need.
  23. I never get caught up on stuff like that in cartoons. Or things like a cartoon character's goggles blinking in place of their eyes.
  24. Life

Oh jeeze I missed many pages of stuff related to something I wrote. I need to check this thing more often. Anyway! Came to post originally, Does anyone else work at a job (or has) where you're more of a leader for your coworkers than your boss is? I mean, not out of trying to take over, but just out of the necessity of problems coming up and solutions being needed? That's kind of happening at my job, and everyone is on board with me except for, well, the boss. And she's starting to show signs of resentment. Not by retaliation (because it would be too easy to nail her to the wall, metaphorically, and have her job). She's just gotten super passive aggressive with me and always tries to find flaws in things I do or nights I lead the team (officially or otherwise).

I totally missed this question, sorry! I address them by what they identify as. MtF are ladies. FtM are guys. It's that easy. I mean, I think.
