  1. Life

So, I'm moving. From the south Bay Area in California to Las Vegas. It was something that was on the table for a long time, in my plans for even longer, and not meant to happen 'til much later from now - but my boss being a worthless putz has more or less forced me to move the timetable up. I spent the whole night at work explaining to my coworkers that I'm leaving and why, because my boss was too fucking dumb to understand what 'confidential' meant. She just blabbed away about it in front of whoever had to come into the office, most notably the gossip-hound at work. She didn't take to any of my visual cues of "SHUT UP NOW PLEASE" either. I mean we were talking about my rate of pay and everything. Just... god. It was an example of why she was the final straw for me. My household situation is terrible, but work has always been like a place to recover at and enjoy. Then my boss just continually worked on ruining it. So I've gotta get out. I really resent how she handled herself today though, and I really intend to hold her ass to the metaphorical fire for it when I get ahold of human resources.
  2. Reaching for the dream - Making music

Making a note to myself here about two other recommendations I got: Reaper and Cubase (v7.5 and v8). I might pass on Fruity Loops now that I remember it's more electronic-music oriented. I dunno if I care to do that style often enough to get a tool that's specialized in it.
  3. Reaching for the dream - Making music

I was actually thinking that, yeah. It may be time to jump onto Facebook and track down some old highschool mates of mine. Because god knows it'll be a pain to find a saxophone player that's down with, "Hey wanna recreate this video game song?!"
  4. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

This is why I stuck to "GamerGate" and "everyone else on the planet."
  5. Cities: Skylines

YoThatLimp, the question is, was the mistake on nature's part, or is that your man-made water / sewage system being amazing?
  6. Reaching for the dream - Making music

Are you talking about things like making the sax play on a note, then sharply jump / stop at a different note while being louder about it? I wish I knew music terminology. If it's possible to do it - but complicated - then I can accept that. If it's not possible at all no matter how much layering / masking is involved, that'll destroy my idea really fast.
  7. Question is, if Cara did a show on the Idle Thumbs Network (or ITN if you're hip) what pun-driven name would it be called?
  8. Reaching for the dream - Making music

Reason is the first recommendation aside from Fruity Loops I've ever been given so I'll probably give that a look. I mean, I'll look into Fruity Loops too. Technically I've used Fruity Loops before, but it was around the time I got out of highschool and it was probably very different then from what it is now. Plus, I was downloading it for some shits-and-giggles reason, rather than actually wanting to use it, and I have vague memories of being overwhelmed by the UI. As for Reason though, the way you describe its layout sounds convenient. I'm probably going to look up YouTube videos / tutorials to see which interface grabs my attention and make my choice there. Question for both of you - Do you find that software is enough for your needs, or have you found yourself needing any hardware like a keyboard or anything else like that? Oh one more thing; as far as 'real' instrument sounds go, how good are Fruity Loops / Reason? Specifically, say, the saxophone? The first project I want to work on is saxophone dependent. Says guy-who-can't-grow-up-beyond-the-grunge-rock-era.
  9. Cities: Skylines

    Oh my.
  10. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

The GaymerX group is getting bombarded by GamerGate on Twitter, from 20ish mentions a day to 1500 all of a sudden. GG of course claims it's being made up, despite the data you can track. My source was here, which has pictures embedded: https://twitter.com/jere7my/status/576978968710160386 One of the GGers qualifies the only valid GG tweets as coming from Adam Baldwin. Which, y'know, is a load.
  11. Conflict definitely has value in life, as long as it results in a resolution and isn't perpetual. Acting like arguments are to be avoided at all costs is unhealthy as fuck - it increases the intensity of boil-overs.
  12. Cities: Skylines

This screenshot sold me on this game more than anything else I've seen at cursory glance. Wow that looks great.
  13. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Someone's kids are being targeted (by mean-spirited comments or actual threats; I don't know, and frankly it doesn't matter), and Kern is being a putz saying it's freedom of expression. Too much freedom on this goddamn world, if you ask me.
  14. Unnecessary Comical Picture Thread

Anyone play Xenoverse yet? The Dragon Ball Z MMO-ish thing? Well too late because some folks already beat everyone to the best characters made:
  15. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

Wookiepedia is a bad source in that they don't really editorialize or cross-reference. They're very literal-minded in what they transcribe about anything Star Wars related. Also they felt it was important to have an article about breasts.
  16. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

Do you have a source on that? I'm wary of anything Lucas has to say about Star Wars and how he imagined things this-way or that, since he's pretty much lied before.
  17. People who play one type of game have the most potential for really fascinating me (though the biggest chance of not). As an example, one of my older brothers - who is very much an outdoorsman in every respect - has secretly played video games all these years without mentioning it to me. The last time I saw him play video games was when the Nintendo was new, just to give a perspective on time. When I first moved here I discovered he has a 360 and has been keeping up with game news enough to be critical of Microsoft's earliest XB1 decisions / announcements. But the games he plays? Pretty much anything AAA is what he knows. He looks down on stuff we all used to play together as being 'for kids,' which isn't new to anyone using the internet on a regular basis, but hearing that in real life and the personality it comes from kinda blows my mind. His inner-nerd is intact when it comes to film and television. But for some reason for video games he felt he had to 'grow up.' Red Dead Redemption is his Citizen Kane of video games, in that it's his Clint Eastwood western of games.
  18. What is the Nadir of the Simpsons?

He was a pretty frequent guest (mostly by way of calling) on the Stern Show, and when remembering him they talked about how he more or less avoided deep discussion of his cancer diagnosis and battle. Not out of denial, but he wanted to have people around him happy and would move on with the discussion. I also heard, though I dunno if this is true, that he would buy zoos and immediately set the animals free? I hope it's true. There's a quote of him somewhere saying that someday people will look back on us and our era, considering us barbarians for caging animals for viewing entertainment.
  19. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

Random thought: Lucas wanted to explain Force affinity by means of bullshit-science-bacteria in the blood. When Vader loses his limbs, wouldn't he have substantially less blood in his body and thus be weaker?
  20. Who Wants To Help Tegan Out?

Can Patreon work for you, Tegan?
  21. Twitter :)

It's always weird to find out you've been blocked by someone on Twitter. I was trying to retweet a retweet someone made, and I was notified the original poster had blocked me from viewing their tweets. Which is weird because I can't imagine how or why, we don't know each other. Edit - Also, I can still see their tweets I guess if I'm following one of their followers and it gets a RT? Twitter is weird, functionally.
  22. IDLE THUMBS 200

I wonder how much of Notch's life post-Mojang is coming from them expecting or wanting him to spend his money on shit they care about. Sentiments like, "Why isn't he investing back in the video game industry helping up and comers?"
  23. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

By the way, extreme irony about the libelous accusation; see everything they say about Leigh Alexander, Zoe Quinn, Anita Sarkeesian, etc.
  24. What is the Nadir of the Simpsons?

Sam Simon, one of the show's original creators, died yesterday. He was there for the first couple seasons and helped establish the show's original tone / feel. He also wrote for Cheers. So it's definitely a sad, sad day.
  25. Super Metroid Appreciation Station

Zero Mission allows for as much, or maybe even more, sequence breaking as Super Metroid. Should you master the controls / knowledge of the game enough. I have no idea if that was by design or coincidence though.
