  1. Microsoft was making the claim about that a couple years ago but I've never really heard any big "huzzah" about the results. It might not be noticeable.
  2. Well "cloud computing" is specifically referring to a remote connection processing things that would typically be done locally. An MMO isn't really the same thing. Imagine if instead of a video card you just need a net connection to have your graphics processed and the software just broadcasts to you what is being done elsewhere. It's an awkward thing and latency would be goofy as hell. Especially with physics being processed.
  3. I've gotta ask... has there been any practical application of cloud computing yet? I remember EA lying about the new Sim City requiring an internet connection for it but that's literally the closest I know about it being a thing.
  4. You think that Microsoft isn't announcing exclusivity because they figure everyone else will be driven to make their own solutions anyway? That's a sound theory.
  5. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Gamergate 'champion' Milo Yiannopoulos has decided that the Oregon shooting is an issue of feminists putting men down. His Twitter feed is full of garbage 'explaining' that. Also this: Someone should tell him that people are not "things" to be shot.
  6. Big news about Microsoft: They bought Havok, the company that makes those SWEET physics possible, from Intel. Before anyone freaks out too much, for once Microsoft is not pulling the exclusivity-card. Yet. So far they say they intend to continue licensing out to Sony, Nintendo, and whoever else. As for the financial details behind the acquisition though, including who stands to make how much, Microsoft is not commenting. http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/10/02/microsoft-buys-havok-from-intel

Another thing about this is that it makes the shit people have been saying to Quinn (and others) even scarier, because it turns out some crazy fucks will indeed follow through on violent acts they threaten via the net.
  8. Square has canceled the "augment your pre-order" program for Deus Ex: MD. While I was super curious to see how that would play out, I think this is for the best. In case anyone missed it, Square setup a program where the more people that pre-ordered Deus Ex: MD the more pre-order bonuses would unlock for everyone.
  9. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

His refusal to acknowledge white-hat and black-hat hackers as terms (which they are; I mean you can't just denounce shit that simply is in this world) and his lacking thought process on the 230 stuff tells me that Arthur Chu is a person that wants the world to be black and white on every issue possible. Which just... isn't the case. A friend and I were talking about, in the case of the 230 thing, how ironic it was that we were in agreement with Popehat. But stuff like that is what makes this whole situation pretty highlighted. By which I mean, Gamergate and everything surrounding it - people in general get SO tied into a group-think purity or ideological purity that they will go to the extent of abandoning rational or critical thought. Arthur Chu is demonstrating this by wanting to apply scorched-earth policy to the internet. GG demonstrates it by never owning up to their terrible shit
  10. Valkyria Chronicles

Only to some extent. Trust me, they will definitely react to you in a lot of cases where you try to juke / trick / abuse it.
  11. Idle Thumbs has actually survived three East Coast departures. First it was Nick, then Chris, and now Danielle. Which means she's totally coming back someday so I'm not even worried!
  12. RE: Child thoughts on how things work. When I was a kid, going into at least 3rd grade, I used to think that bathroom plumping, toilets included, didn't work when the power went out.
  13. I really hate the circumstances that Danielle is having to leave under. Cost of living is a facet of the thing I get the most worked up about in politics (economics, specifically when it comes to the non-wealthy), so from where I sit I just see Danielle as a victim of stupid shit that the country is dragging its ass on fixing. But I'm glad she's gonna be working on another podcast on the network. It was great being on the ground floor of her increasing frequency of being on Idle Thumbs and just pointing out she's more or less a Thumb and things were great! Though when she says stuff like this: on Twitter I just gotta say, damn it Jr. Mints, you're always a Thumb. Don't be silly!

Wouldn't that kind of report have a level of public accessibility? Meaning it'd be VERY easy to determine who puts their name on what?
  15. I wouldn't have guessed it but Mario Maker streams are good entertainment for kids. Aside from streamers who curse a lot. But my roomies' two year old has a pretty nifty impression of Mario's jump sound from SMW down.
  16. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

This is tangentially related to all this; Arthur Chu, a name I've only seen come up from GG mostly (they hate him) has decided to piss EVERYONE off with a bombastic opinion: He wants Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act to be removed. The reason? He believes it will curb harassment. The reality? Section 230 prevents providers (Twitter, Facebook, etc) from being responsible for the shit that users post to it. Comment sections being the most obvious example. He's being a dumb dumb because removal of that law would make every site ever a target of lawsuit for anything that anyone says ever just because someone else doesn't like it. It's a pretty important law in the books right now. This article below covers it in good detail but goddamn. This is the dumbest scorched-earth policy to getting rid of GG or online harassment ever. https://popehat.com/2015/09/29/arthur-chu-would-like-to-make-lawyers-richer-and-you-quieter-and-poorer/
  17. Buying brand-new from Gamestop is the antithesis to their business model and income structure, so that's the most they get from me. Actually the most they got from me was when I bought a used PS3 and a couple of games, but that was because it was one of the super duper rare fully-backwards-compatible models. So they got $700 raw profit from me. Those motherfuckers. They were literally selling that used PS3 at new cost.

*sigh* Trending now on Twitter is a Breitbart article slandering Polygon. I think it's old but clearly something happened to make this happen and I am so fucking tired of this cultural-xenophic shit from Gamergate.
  19. Valkyria Chronicles

Okay that one was absolutely bullshit. I think it was the one that tainted my playing of the game forever, where I started to do shit like trigger targeting moments temporarily to prevent things from happening, then moving a bit, repeat. All that sorta stuff. I mean I love the game to death but yeah, they kiiiiiiiinda dropped the ball with that.
  20. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

That aside it's a roundabout way of saying "kill yourself" without saying the words. Milo is a sick fuck.
  21. Valkyria Chronicles

I haven't played that chapter since the PS3 version so I totally forgot which one that is. But I do remember the game suddenly diving into, "Alright you've played this enough; time to take the gloves off and play it as a VIDEO GAME ROLE-PLAYERS GTFO." I mean on the upside this is definitely one of those games that benefits from you taking what you've learned and reapplying it to earlier levels. You find out how hilariously easy some of them are.
  22. Yeah. I mean there is something to be said of sensationalizing the non-sensational but people have destroyed any and all meaning of the phrase.
  23. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I'm almost hesitant to say this, but Derek Smart is getting involved with the "omg block lists = censorship" thing. What a way to come out of obscurity. Hmm... like Mark Kern. Man. What happens to people when they drop out of the video game making limelight?
  24. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Actually she's leaning off it for a couple days or so because her (and others) going to the UN Summit on internet harassment triggered a huge wave of - you guessed it - harassment. It's not the harassment, it's the amount of mentions that's making her account damn near unusable for the time being.
  25. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Milo Whats-his-ass, the Breitbart guy that's roped GG in for page reads, continues to be goddamn terrible. Observe spin:
