toblix Posted July 4, 2009 This is great. I loaded up the game today to play the level with my sister, and I got an achievement from 5+ people playing the level. It had 10 plays total, which is awesome. Anyway, I learned some important lessons about making LBP levels whilst playing it with my sister: Always make sure the active checkpoint will take you somewhere useful. Always make sure the active checkpoint will take you somewhere useful. Always make sure the active checkpoint will take you somewhere useful. Always make sure the active checkpoint will take you somewhere useful. Also, I found out that desigining a puzzle is weird. I was amazed at how hard it apparently was to figure out the rocket powered sliding color matching puzzle. In the end I had to do it myself. I really feel like I could do another level. It's an exhausting process, but it's really sweet when I log on and see some other people have played it.
James Posted July 5, 2009 Yeah, when I got the puzzle I was kind of surprised it took me so long. I think it's not quite obvious that the symbols are significant, since LBP levels tend to be decorated with that stuff anyway. Also, the fact that you're dealing with several stages of abstraction complicates things a little: you move the balls in relation to your ultimate goal, in order to control the rockets (possibly one level of abstration), which are in a different location (definitely a level of abstraction), only the distance is converted into speed (another level), which then has to be regulated in order to stop the rocket on the symbol, introducing a time component perhaps not expected in this puzzle; finally, this all then transfers into action back where your objective is, and the puzzle is complete. I don't know, perhaps I'm reducing things a bit too much, and it's a good puzzle idea and I wouldn't want to discourage you from doing similar things in future -- ultimately, having all that stuff going on made it fairly satisfying -- but I thought I'd share my thoughts on why it would take a while. It's not immediately apparent what you have to do and precisely how what you're doing will cause that. In retrospect it shouldn't be very hard at all, but I guess my retrospective view of myself is more perceptive than my actual self.
toblix Posted August 19, 2011 Uh, so did anyone else make a level? As far as I know I should be able to play them in LBP2 as well.
