I also dismissed this game a week ago because of all the violence in the trailer, but enough people said it was incredible that I picked it up. No regrets there! I have this problem where I don't want a bad score, so I will be very risky and will die a lot. I probably spent twenty minutes on a single floor, but when it was over I had an A+ ranking which made it seem worth it. Has anyone gotten any points in flexibility yet? It's always zero for me. Also, how do you kill dogs? It seems like you have to use guns on them since melee weapons pass over them when thrown and they basically teleport up to you to get at your throat. Maybe I'll try throwing a knife at them...

Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

Just quit Alpha Protocol for the worst reasons. The game has some ridiculous problem with its mouse control that never got patched. I implemented two separate fixes which drastically improved the's games play-ability, and yet it still has the worst mouse control of any game ever. -

Grueling is the exact word I would use to describe the combat in Dragon Age. I used cone of cold so many damn times in that game, including probably one hundred times on the final boss alone. -
Could you provide a link to some of that bounty? The last time I checked out interactive fiction was probably ten years ago.

Carrying both a shotgun and a rifle in Stalker was a huge hassle, but it was worth it for the bloodsuckers alone. -
My reaction to the post above this one is the face you see to the left.

When I came back to the game after listening to the first run of the podcast it was like my brain had been altered to love the game. Three words of advice: bolt action rifle.

The Ethics of "Freemium" / Free-to-Play Design

Speaking about free or low-priced games with in-game purchases, as an iOS gamer I find these design choices frequently ruin whatever game they're in. Infinity Blade 2 was pretty fun until I hit a sheer wall of grinding. It took me an embarrassing amount of time to realize that what I was suppose to do was use real money to buy in-game money, but in my defense it was the first iOS game I really got into and I was pretty naive about the whole thing. Doodle Jump was another game I enjoyed playing for ten minutes a week, but the developers put an end to that when they introduced collectible (and purchasable) coins into the game. Coins work for something like Temple Runner but in Doodle Jump's case the game was totally broken after that,. -
They have a game that definitely wins for most generic title of this generation: Zombie Shooter 2. My reaction to that name was, a word at a time, eyes roll, "ugh" and "of course". It's getting ridiculous how many stores that aren't Steam offer Steam keys as an option, or upon purchasing a game just give you a Steam key and that's it. I fear the day Gabe N. cashes out and my licenses to all those games gets futzed-with. Imagine Microsoft taking over the Steam executable and making it a resource-intensive ad farm. Knowing me I won't be interested in playing many games I own right now in ten years but just in case I've been going for the DRM-free option whenever I can.

Episode 188: We Will Be Watching, Commander
TurboPubx-16 replied to Rob Zacny's topic in Three Moves Ahead Episodes
This was a very good episode. It felt like you were talking to an independent developer, not a guy about to ship a big multi-platform game. -
I also feel that maintaining Clem's humanity is of huge importance, but looking back I've done a lot of inhumane things in the interest of keeping her safe and well-fed. If there was a chapter where Lee was acting without any possibility of Clem finding out, I think my ethical standards could possibly drop like a rock. I feel like the writing is so good in this game that I have to hold up my end of the bargain. If it were almost any other game I would have no problem walking into a bandit camp and wasting everyone or pickpocketing every NPC if I were permitted to do so.

The fault lies with the audience. Skip this post if you're not up for a healthy dose of cynicism. If this is a failure I'll bet they'll come and say that they just combined the best (or indeed worst) elements of successful Kickstarter projects. Thinking back to Masters of Doom I can imagine an epilogue where they're sitting in a room crapping on Kickstarter games, only to dare each other into starting their own one. -

The way they describe the game I'm not sure the creators are feeling it: What is this, a description of a 99 cent game on the app store? -
Does the game have a tutorial? I have no idea what it is I'm supposed to do. I wandered around looking for some way to make tools but eventually I revealed too much of the map for the game to handle, frame rate-wise.

Episode 187: Faster Than Light, Slower Than Death
TurboPubx-16 replied to Rob Zacny's topic in Three Moves Ahead Episodes
I mostly agree with what Problem Machine has said. Yesterday, after loosing a game in sector seven due to a lack of decent ordnance, I searched my memory for weapons and offensive droids offered to me for sale. I determined that it was possible to win the game, but only if I had purchased some very expensive equipment in the first two sectors; equipment that I wouldn't have been able to use until much later, paid for with arguably the most crucial scrap in the game, the first 200 you collect. Random is good, but not this kind of random. Why are top tier items in sector one, and long term-oriented augments in sector seven? Would it ruin the game if it were programmed such that, in the situation where you weren't buying the same nine items the stores kept showing you, it would show you another nine? -
If a game costs ten dollars and it gives you "40 hours of mostly really good times" I think the appropriate response is "WOOOHOOOO!"

On the most recent episode of Rebel FM they discussed a preview build of the game and in doing so alleviated my most serious worries. It sounds like projectiles do not disappear if they miss their target, in fact they will continue traveling and will hit things-you-totally-want-them-to-hit/things-you-really-don't-want-them-to-hit. Also, on the most recent Gamers with Jobs, someone mentioned that he fired a rocket to remove just enough of a wall so that his sniper could get line of sight on, and ultimately shoot, the smallest corner of an alien's head. That sounds like XCOM to me. If only the levels themselves were randomized, then I would be absolutely sold. And while I'm wishing for things, bring back time units too.

Hey man, just be grateful you have the Rock ship! My main problem with the game right now is trying to get the other vessels I've fought through Rock sectors dozens of times and only had the chance to get that ship once, and chose the wrong option out of un-willful ignorance. Four times I've picked up the damaged stasis pod and not found the Zoltan research facility, or should I say, the game forgot to put the research facility there, because I've lost games visiting every beacon to find it. Twice I've fought the famous Kthylzzzidrdzzzz and still his "mystery remains unsolved" or whatever crap the game tells me. Guess what FTL? Next time I get a quest that I haven't seen before I'm pulling out my phone and cheating, and it's going to be your fault. When it comes to stealth B, I could write a book about my failures with that ship, but once I start typing about it in this little box I think of ways new ways to tackle that devious little ship. Here's the strategy so far: Regarding missiles: if they were cheaper you would be doubly discouraged from taking surrender deals and in my opinion that would remove a great deal of the game's depth. By now you've surely noticed that it is often times much more advantageous for you to take a deal rather than destroy your enemy, regardless of how safe a position you might be in. This is something I really appreciate about FTL. I don't know about you, but In every other game I've played surrender dialogue boxes are a total waste of time, unless you are down to your last hit point.

It's been a good day for the federation! First, I finally beat the game as the Zoltan ship. Then I switched to easy mode to unlock Zoltan B. I quit out of easy mode to start a new game on normal with my new layout, which already seemed overpowered before I found a burst laser II in a shop. I desperately pulled the scrap together to buy it, but before I even had the chance to equip it: "Holy crap! Another burst laser II floating in space!" The only thing I needed after that was a cloaking system and stealth weapons; I came nowhere close to needing boarding, drones, missiles or bombs. I've finished the game five times on normal, but if you gave me five tries to beat the game right now I couldn't guarantee that I could do it. Since I first defeated the boss, every time I've reached the last stand I've easily overwhelmed him. My problems are the very early game and the very late game. Some of the ship layouts have ridiculous weaknesses and if you're unlucky the first few enemies can hand you an unavoidable game over. The late game is also impossible if you can't put together a decent combination of strong weapons, regardless of how strong the other aspects of your ship might be. At least, that's how it seems to me. Can anyone recommend a let's play series or a Twitch channel that features someone who can consistently beat the game?

When people talk about Dark Souls all I can think is, man I wish that game came out when I was twelve years old. I would have loved it.

The first patch out now, here are the details: http://www.reddit.co...pdated_to_1023/. I'm disappointed there are no balance changes. Burst laser II's and ion bombs are not only the easiest weapons to use, they're also the most efficient and compatible with any setup. Read up the story of someone's first win and 90% of the time they will mention getting a second burst laser II. Contrast that with some of the other weapons: nobody is praising hull lasers or beams, and heavy lasers are picked up grudgingly in lieu of their less risky cousins. In a game about strategy and being on the right side of luck I can't justify using brute force or all-or-nothing tactics, and I assume most people feel the same way.

Today I learned the value being a survivalist. Usually when I get a bad roll of the die I get frustrated, which leads to me making a tiny mistake, which the AI exploits to do massive damage, which leads me to rage quit. In my last game I had to run away from half the battles in sectors six and seven. Things were looking pretty dire when five Mantis boarded my ship simultaneously and managed to kill my Rock. Somehow I dragged my piece-of-crap ship to the last stand. Then I rolled a twenty: there's a shop here! I've never seen a shop in the last area! Then I rolled another twenty: there's was a drone control system for sale along with an anti-ship drone mark II. I sold two of my augments to buy what I needed, fought a couple of enemies to make the necessary upgrades, and annihilated the boss with a third of my hull to spare.
