  1. Wow, you guys went deep silly on that pre-intro.
  2. FTL

You can shoot guys out of the ship? I always have to wait for them to suffocate.
  3. Homophobic?

By the way, a podcast episode about the thread's subject, in which a prominent ethicist is interviewed.
  4. Odd quotes that stick

John Steinbeck: "Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires." Not only is it pretty funny, but it basically sums up the American Dream, and American Exceptionalism generally.
  5. Homophobic?

By the way, when I said "with a choir", I wasn't talking about Twig and Orvidos. I actually had Stanhope's live audience in mind.
  6. Homophobic?

I chose those images without thought for their historical context because the point I'm making has little to do with history (although it is obviously steeped in it). The point is that the meaning of words does not lie only in the eyes their beholders. Humans are not perfectly rational - despite ourselves, we tend to become invested in what others think of us, knowing, even, how little weight ought to be placed in it if we are at peace with who we are. For that reason, it is not sensible to ask the gay man to grow a thicker skin about people calling him a faggot because "faggot", to him, has come to represent all the contempt the world feels for who he is. He may know quite well there's little "faggot" suggests about his true nature (or, perhaps, as might be likelier, does not know), but it hardly stops the word from hammering home, perhaps again, just how alien and how dirty he is to others. Yes, although he understands homosexuality is not a flaw, the hate still bears down on him: "I am unwanted. I am society's detritus." Would you fault him for feeling that way?
  7. Homophobic?

That guy is an ignoramus with a choir, and every fatuous point he makes hinders social progress. Maybe Mr. Straight, White, and Wealthy has never felt the sting of true hatred, but for every person who winces when he spouts "faggot", I hope he does. What could the problem with words be?
  8. Homophobic?

What the casual use "stop fucking me in the arse" and, more generally, "rape" does unambiguously is contribute positively (or negatively depending on definitions) to rape culture - this sort of language en masse creates an environment in which, essentially, the perception of rape's cruelty is wrongfully diminished. I think a good rule for having an opinion is to avoid language that hurts socially disadvantaged people. Water-sport fetishists are not socially disadvantaged people; homosexuality is not a fetish. In fact, the breed of equivocation that places the shaming of homosexuals and the shaming water-sport fetishists in the same category is straw-man nonsense. Water-sport fetishists aren't beaten to death for their fondness for urine. maybe this is all parody what's happening
  9. I saw you talking about Infinite Jest on Twitter a while ago, Chris. Have you read/what do you think of The Pale King?

  11. http://www.bethblog.com/podcast/ So far, the podcast's episodes (of which there are two) consist mostly of interviews with Bethesda's developers. There isn't much Thumbsly banter, but the interviews are interesting anyway.

  14. V The Elder Scrolls

It seems like Bethesda has spent their last few development cycles working on improving the parts of their games that have the most visceral impact on the play experience (physics, animations, graphics, voice acting) while dodging around what ought to be the most important part of the Bethesdan experience - storytelling. They've certainly improved hugely since Oblivion, Morrowind, and Fallout, especially in terms of non-dialogue-based storytelling, but I don't understand why so much of the writing put into Skyrim is still so bad. I suppose pacing is a large part of the problem Skyrim. I wonder if Bethesda worries that players'll get bored of the same themes after a while, so they try to keep questlines short, expecting players to move on to different ones.
  15. V The Elder Scrolls

Man, the Thieves' Guild questline is awful. You steal like three things for them and It's like Bethesda wanted to convey what it feels like to be part of a seedy criminal organization, but didn't have the patience to make anything that does that effectively.
  16. The threat of Big Dog

"The researchers suggested that the devices could eventually become the power source for a race of remote controlled cyborg insects with neural electrodes implants, communications equipment, microphones and other sensors."

  19. Obligatory comical YouTube thread

As far as I can tell, it's still being suggested that the people who made the video wasted their effort, which is an assumption that relies on the idea that the video was created at the expense of a more valuable endeavor. That assumption is baseless; there is nothing to show the creators didn't spend the time they didn't use to make the video doing something important, and I don't understand why anyone, without the information to know otherwise, would imply that isn't so. I'm going to go out on a limb and say the guys who made the video probably have day-jobs (perhaps, if they're as creatively talented as Sal 'n' Limones says they ought to be, they have jobs making some kinds of worthwhile cultural contributions) and the time they spent making the video was spare - secondary to that which they spend on their career. My point with the Gears of War and Superbowl examples was that every second of the day doesn't need to be consumed doing something useful. While the Minecraft video seemingly required an inordinate amount of discipline and time for a product of value equal to anything gained watching men chainsaw each other or score touchdowns, it is probably as significant to the people who made it as chainsaws and touchdowns are to a different, regular person. "I'm off work, so I'll unwind for the evening with GoW multiplayer." "I'm off work, so I'll unwind for the evening by making a silly, mindless Minecraft project with some friends." (Also, that the project took the guys months (as it says in the video's description) implies that they probably weren't working on it every waking moment.)
  20. Obligatory comical YouTube thread

Maybe people just want something to do in their spare time. It's no more fulfilling than playing Gears of War or watching the Superbowl for a few hours.
  21. Life

It often bothers users to install unwanted Apple software and it's a bit cumbersome.
  22. Obligatory comical YouTube thread

In that case, then I suppose they weren't wasting their time at all! J'accuse!
  23. Obligatory comical YouTube thread

You know, it's possible that they have jobs and just made the video after getting home from work each day or something like that. It's weird to assume they wasted every waking second of time they had when the video was in production, granting that making the video was a waste of time at all.
